The Great War is actually ambiguous on if the couple stays together—by nature of the title alone. It’s all World War I imagery, and that war was constantly considered the last war, the last Great War, or the war to end all wars. Everyone was secure in declaring that nothing like that would happen again… and then WWII happened. So by linking it to WWI and not WWII, there’s an inherent ambiguity about if it was the last great struggle/fight or if another, more devastating one followed
