Chapter 19 - Elemental Magic
“Show me!” Mom ordered the moment I stepped into our Study.
“A good morning to you too, Mom,” I replied a bit cheekily, which apparently annoyed her enough to drag me here first thing in the morning after breakfast. Apparently, hours of testing me yesterday hadn’t been enough.
“Don’t be cheeky.” She gave me a cold look.
I let out a sigh. “My bad. Show you what? I already demonstrated advanced spellwork in Charms, DADA, and Transfiguration. Since silent casting without Wand Motion is something Hogwarts only starts teaching in sixth year, I would say I’m already beyond the level of my Peers. Or do you want me to go through every single Spell one by one?”
“Of course not. Don’t be ridiculous. Your Wandwork was acceptable.”
Wow, high praise.
“I want to see the Magic you learned in that new World.”
Right, I let that slip during our test yesterday... Of course she would be interested in that.
“Alright...”
I pointed my Wand toward one of the Chairs in the Room and transfigured it into a large bucket.
Next, a Waterball formed at the tip of my Wand before shooting toward the bucket and hitting it precisely. I didn’t want to cause any destruction in this Room, and I had gotten a lot of practice controlling my Spells.
Meanwhile, my Mother was staring at me with an expression I could only describe as genuine Shock.
“That’s... do you even have any idea what you just did?”
“I cast a Waterball? Basically a Water Version of Confringo?”
Isn’t that obvious? Why was she acting so surprised?
“Of course you wouldn’t know. It’s not part of the Hogwarts Curriculum, since it’s a very advanced topic...” Mom sighed as she rubbed her head again. She had already done that a lot yesterday.
“Just know that you cast genuine Elemental Magic. A field of Magic that is only pursued during DADA or Charm Mastery.”
I didn’t get it.
“Uhh, are you sure? Doesn’t Hogwarts teach Elemental Magic from the first year onward? The Fire-making Charm and Ice Jinx are both taught during first-year Charms Classes. Later, there’s the Freezing Spell, Bombarda, and Confringo. Sixth Years learn Aquamenti. All of those sound pretty Elemental to me.”
“You really like to tap into restricted Knowledge...” My Mother helplessly shook her head. “But I guess I have no choice at this point, since you already learned to cast Elemental Magic silently. Of course, this still isn’t on the same level as the Dimensional Gap. Far from it.”
For a moment, she gathered her thoughts before opening her mouth again.
“First of all, the difference between the Elemental Charms you learn at School and real Elemental Magic isn’t taught to Students because true Elemental Magic is so dangerous for the User. You need to be very experienced to control that kind of Magic,” Mother explained. “Let’s see... Do you have any idea why you learn the Fire-making Charm in your first year, while you learn the Water-making Charm, Aquamenti, in your sixth year?”
That was a good point.
I had never really thought about it, but shouldn’t fire logically be more dangerous?
“Alright, you have an advantage over every other Person in the Wizarding World. You can see the difference. Use that fancy new Eye of yours to watch my Magic.”
My Mom pointed her Wand toward the fireplace.
“Incendio!”
I watched her Magic instantly travel through her Wand toward the fireplace while taking on the form of Fire. Fire colored like her Magic. Then, the heat created by her Fire-like Magic ignited the Wood, and it truly began to Burn with natural Fire.
“Did you see it?”
“Yes, your Magic took on the properties of Fire, and its heat ignited the Wood.”
“Good. Now watch this.”
Mom pointed her Wand at my Bucket.
“Aquamenti!”
This time, her Magic spread out from her Wand into the surroundings and began gathering something from the Air.
Moisture!
It gathered the Moisture to form a Waterball, similar to my Waterball spell it just subsitutes some of the Water with Water created trough Magic, before it flew toward the Bucket nothing of her Magic to be seen only Water.
“Do you get it now?”
Get what?
Oh...
“The Fire-making Charm only gave your Magic the properties of Fire. It was still Magic, just acting like Fire. Meanwhile, the Water-making Charm gathered real Water from the Atmosphere!”
“Exactly, and for that reason, Aquamenti is considered a Semi-Elemental Spell. Meanwhile, all the other Spells on the Hogwarts Curriculum are just Magic pretending to be an Element, not an actual Element.”
Mom nodded approvingly.
“And what did your Waterball do?”
Thinking back to when I was casting any Mushoku Tensei Spell, I immediately spotted the difference.
“It transformed my Magic into real Water, while I used more Magic to control and shape it.”
I finally realized.
“That is true Elemental Magic! Transforming your Magic into a real Element. But Elements are wild, just like nature itself, making them exceedingly difficult to control. You need a lot of discipline to control them, or the Spell can easily harm the Caster." Mom nodded once she saw that I got it.
“Fun fact, Protego is useless against a real Elemental Spell, aside from the Earth Element, since it only blocks Magic and Physical Attacks. Wind, Fire, and Water are not considered Physical by the Shield, and since they are real Elements instead of Magic pretending to be an Element, it won’t block them. An Aquamenti can bypass a Shield too.”
Oh, that could have ended badly.
I probably could have killed someone with a careless Fireball during a duel.
Good to know.
Earth is solid, Water is liquid, Wind is Vapour, and Fire is Plasma. The physical aspect of the standard Shield Charm probably isn’t dense enough to block liquids and the looser Physical States.
“Are there ways to block Elemental Magic?”
“There are more advanced Shields, which are, of course, harder to learn.”
Mom nodded.
Next, a specific Spell came to mind, one known to be notoriously difficult to control.
“So, Fiendfyre is hard to control because it is true Elemental Magic?”
“Here we are again with the restricted Magic. This time, real Dark Magic like Fiendfyre?”
Mom raised an eyebrow at me.
“It just came to mind since I heard it is notoriously difficult to control...”
She shook her head at me but still answered.
“Fiendfyre is even harder to control. That Spell consists of three perfectly blended components, each one alone as difficult to control as Elemental Magic. First, it is partially true Elemental Fire, perfectly combined with the Caster’s ignited Magic. And I don’t mean Magic that takes on the properties of Fire, but literal Magic that gets ignited. Lastly, the Caster’s negative Emotions are ignited into Cursed Fire, making it a very dangerous Spell to control and a Dark Spell thanks to the negative Emotions component.”
I learned a lot just now, even if it was all beyond the Hogwarts Curriculum.
But damn, I loved Magic.
Mom truly knew a lot about the inner workings of Magic.
Seeing that she had answered all my Questions for now, she continued.
“Alright, how powerful is your strongest Elemental Spell? And have you already thought about what you are going to study next? You are beyond Hogwarts Standards in most Classes already. All you lack is the Theory. Oh, and I already talked to your Grandfather. We will visit him this afternoon.”
Ah yes, the mystery about my Family’s heritage.
“That’s fine by me. And besides Theory, I would like to focus mostly on Ancient Runes and Arithmancy.”
“Any particular reason? I know you want to take the Electives, but I know you. That tone of yours just now didn’t sound like this is only about the Hogwarts Electives.”
Mom really knew me well.
“I have some ideas that I want to pursue. But for those, I will need to study Enchanting, Warding, Alchemy, and Artificing and have a good grasp of all of them,” I admitted. There wasn’t much point in hiding it.
“You pretty much mentioned every advanced field based on those two Electives, each of them being their own field of Mastery to pursue. You do realize that just a single one of them is pretty much an entire lucrative Career? And you made it sound like that’s just the beginning. What could be so advanced that it needs four advanced fields as a basis?”
“Mom, I got thousands of Books on Magical Knowledge from a different World. They have their own forms of Enchanting, Warding, Alchemy, and Artificing. I obviously want to combine the Knowledge of both Worlds to become the very best. And honestly, those four fields are already intertwined anyway. Alchemy to create the perfect Materials, Enchantments and Warding could be one field and further magically improve the Materials, and Artificing to make everything work together.”
“I see. You have lofty goals, Alistair. How about you start small first and begin with Ancient Runes and Arithmancy? Once you have a good grasp of them, I will help you as much as I can. But my own Specialization is more focused on Wandwork.”
Reasonable suggestion, I guess.
“Now then, there is still one Skill I haven’t tested yet. And don’t think I haven’t noticed how you tried to shift the Subject away from how powerful your Elemental Magic is.”
And before I knew what was happening, I felt a massive force slam into my Mental Shields.
———
“What kind of posture is that? Walk straight! Are you still sulking?”
Said the Woman who had spent the morning torturing my Mind while calling herself my Mother.
Who’s the real Devil here?
“Are you thinking something rude?”
“No, Ma’am!”
“That’s better, but you may call me Mom. But better behave. Your Grandfather is a hard man.”
She said that as I followed her up the Path toward the big-ass Mansion.
Yeah, Mom’s Family was rich.
You could instantly tell that the Mansion was old, but it was clearly well cared for.
She soon led me toward the overly large and pompous entrance, and the door flew open before we even announced our arrival.
Standing in the entrance was an old man who bore some resemblance to my Mother, mainly around his eyes. That striking, cold, crystal-clear blue was the very same as hers, or mine whenever I looked into a mirror.
At first glance, I could tell that this man was not a Death Eater.
That was my main worry about coming here.
After all, both my Uncles, my Mother’s older Brothers, were part of Voldemort’s inner circle and were currently enjoying an extended vacation in Azkaban.
Based on my experience and Meta Knowledge, my Grandfather didn’t seem to be one of them.
You could roughly divide Death Eaters into two Categories.
First, there were the batshit-crazy ones. They were completely brainwashed by his Ideology, and you could tell they were Insane with a single glance.
I believed my Uncles fell into that Category. I had never met them, but I had read their descriptions. Most of those types were currently in Azkaban.
The second Category consisted of slimy opportunists. Those types looked like prissy cunts, basically the stereotypical Pureblood. Lucius Malfoy would be the prime example of that Category.
Of course, there were more Voldemort Supporters, like the poor people living on the edge of Society, with Werewolves being one example, but those weren’t Death Eaters.
And Gramps didn’t look like the type who would accept the Position of a common grunt.
Nah, the man in front of me looked like a hardened War Veteran.
I could see that he had Scars, which he didn’t even bother to hide. Instead, he seemed to wear them with pride.
And that was just from what I could see on his face, neck, and Hands. The man was dressed like a Pureblood, after all.
Visible Scars in the Wizarding World meant one thing: they had residual Magic in them. And those only came from Curses and similar forms of Magic.
Normal Scars vanished after having a simple healing Spell cast on you, even years later. If you wanted to keep a normal Scar on purpose, you would need to avoid any form of magical healing, since Scars disappearing was a side effect of it.
But there was also the way he stood there and looked at us. His entire presence was different from that of the usual Wizard.
The instincts I had developed over the last six months told me one thing.
That man was a powerhouse.
Mom, to a lesser extent, gave off a similar feeling.
No, I didn’t think he was a Death Eater. There was no way a man like that would bow to Voldemort and let himself be branded like cattle.
“Quite eager to meet your Grandson,” Mom greeted dryly.
Grandfather simply ignored her as his steely eyes stared me down for a very long moment before he finally opened his mouth.
“Haven’t you learned to stand properly, boy? What has your Mother taught you? Where are your Manners? It’s customary for the younger generation to greet their Elders!”
My eyes shifted to my Mother for a moment... They were definitely related. They had the exact same tone when barking their complaints at me.
“Greetings, Grandfather. It is nice to meet you.”
I greeted the man politely.
“Not like that!”
He barked before straightening himself, one hand on his Chest and the other slightly behind him, his head tilted in a slight nod.
“This is how you greet someone of equal standing.”
Ugh, what?
Instead of complaining, I simply mirrored him and repeated my greeting.
“Don’t lower your head so much! We are of an ancient noble House! While we show respect to others, we bow to no one!”
I immediately corrected my position.
“Good, like that.”
As soon as the old man was satisfied, I asked, “Grandfather, I hope you do realize that I am not a Pureblood or a Noble... so what is this about?”
The old man simply glared at my Mother.
“Of course you didn’t tell him. Is our status such a shame to you? At least you haven’t failed completely with his education. Unlike those pathetic excuses that call themselves Purebloods these days, he seems to be quite well trained and doesn’t rely solely on his Magic.”
Yeah, that was more Ghislaine than Mom.
“I never wanted my Children to have anything to do with the Pureblood world, especially our House. Its Legacy...”
Mother sighed.
“But it seems like I don’t have a Choice anymore. The circumstances have changed.”
“You gave me your Word the last time you were here, Leonie,” Grandfather added with a hard look.
“To bring them here. They never needed to accept this Legacy!” Mother corrected him.
“But well... you will be happy to know that...”
“He is a Devil.”
The Man finished for her.
“What? You didn’t expect me not to know the moment you stepped into the Wards? Did you forget who created them? The very Founder of our House!”
“Should have known...”
She muttered.
“Alright, can someone finally tell me what this is about? What does me being a Devil have to do with anything?”
I finally lost my patience. Clearly, something was going on that I wasn’t aware of.
Even if I ignored the fact that Grandfather knew about Devils, too, or that our Wards could detect them.
Shit, what if Hogwarts’ Wards could do the same?
“Since your Mother doesn’t seem to have told you anything, let me get straight to the point.”
The old man said, “The first thing you should know is that you have been the Heir of House Lestrange since birth, with your Sister currently in second place. There is no way I would leave the House to those worthless sons of mine. And secondly, there is the truth about our House. It is the oldest House in the Wizarding World, even predating those Blacks. But it wasn’t always known as House Lestrange!”
What?
