Mr Mopp

The three panels where Hope and Ma Cackler exchange looks are the most powerful to me. A stark, beautiful moment with so much said without words. In this moment, Hope realizes that she doesn’t see the faceless monster of her childhood, nor even a strange ‘other’ too alien to comprehend. She sees a woman with thoughts, fears, and feelings just like her own, She sees the tired eyes of a mother who’d spent days fearing the worst for a lost child, and then found him returned safe and cared for by creatures she did not know could care at all. What must be running through her mind now? Hope could not know the full effect of her kindness. But here, it’s meaning to the Cackler is not lost on her. In that twilit silence, the two women’s worlds are bridged, and a message breaks past the barrier of language. The unspoken words the Cackler mother wishes Hope to hear are laden with sincere emotion, and a sober reverence for a changed world. She says, “I have misjudged you, lion. Thank you for saving my baby”.
