I still wonder, why the second crewmember was on board, adding more weighth to this already large plane. No wonder that they could not shoot down a single of the nimble and agile A6M2 Zeros while they tried to save the UK-carrier HMS Hermes. But at least the plane performed well against the italians.

You need to understand that this plane was designed from the outset to meet a RN requirement for a Recce \ Fighter. In that context the second set of eyes was essential. Having a back seater who could also do the navigation and man a radio was a very big asset too - the number of single seat fighters that got lost from carriers due to navigation errors is shocking. The Fulmar was not expected to operate against fighters, noone expected to run into them in the roles and areas it was supposed to operate in. The defensive job was to shoot down or chase away recce aircraft and break up unescorted bomber formations. This second point is important because at the time the only way level bombers could hope to hit anything at sea was by flying in formation and dropping together on the command of the lead bomber. Fulmars proved perfectly capable in the roles they were designed to fill - they had good range and endurance and excellent ammo capacity. The problem was the war didn't go the way the RN had planned, and when they ran into fighters that were either land based; or carrier planes that had the superlative performance of a Zero, they were totally outclassed.
