SO much about this one. One of the top rated episodes of the show for a reason, imo. I took so many notes this time. The first of which, is LET’S FUCKING GOOOO. Just noticed on this watch that they don’t include every single title card, but they get close. Season four’s normal one isn’t represented here, but they used the unique title cards that that season gave us instead. “I’m special agent Smith, this is special agent...” “Smith.” “Smith.” Both Marie and Maeve are gems. Also CHUCK. Just fucking shows up at the end of this episode like fans hadn’t spent the last five years wondering where the fuck he misted off to in Swan Song. So many fourth-wall references here, like the Samulet hitting Jensen and the stunt performers in the face and lips while shooting. The “we got work to do” callback to the pilot, “they’re a couple in real life”, Ghostfacers (by the way, I love that you we’re like “not the Ghostfacers, come on” and then IMMEDIATELY sang their theme song), the BM scenes… So many. Some of my favourites in particular are the Dutch angle that takes effect on the boys as they’re watching elements of the show play out in front of them for the first time, the idea that “Sam hit a dog” is equally important as everything else he lists off to Marie yet is supposed to encapsulate all the bullshit from season eight, and above all that even though Charlie said the unpublished Carver Edlund books got online, Marie still only considers the events up to and including Swan Song canon. That one is so fucking funny to me, referencing the original plan for the show, and how people view the show now (season ten). Many stubborn fans see the first five seasons as canon and the rest just like, nothing. This is just the showrunners’ version of the story. They were speaking directly to the audience with that, which is cool. Initially Dean is thrown off by everything and pointing out things that are wrong, deciding what is correct, like the showrunners (or people critical of fanfiction) would. By the end he says “forget it, you do your thing bro. I fucking hate it but I don’t decide how you feel about shit” and encourages the author of this alternate version to keep doing their art. Because it’s their art, not everyone else’s. I like that. I also like that demon smoke effect, that was fucking choice. Super cool. The trivia about this episode is a goldmine, but this one is my absolute favourite. I lifted this particular description of it from IMDb: “Director Philip Sgriccia was very careful to not let the main cast hear the musical numbers before they filmed the scenes and so the first reactions you see from Sam and Dean are real. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have both said that the cover of "Carry on Wayward Son" was very moving for them.” It's very moving for me too. Makes me tear up every time. It's beautiful, especially that last note. Fuck. Personally I think Calliope is a fine name, doesn’t stand out as weird to me. Especially if they might use Callie as a nickname or something. Speaking of, in my research I found that the actress who plays Calliope here played a character named Callie in a movie called Hunting Season. Coincidence made me laugh. Also, apparently the scarecrow was played by the actor who played the golem in 8x13 Everybody Hates Hitler! Hell yeah. 17!

Fun fact: Meave's mention of Sam with shorter hair making a good Dean is a reference to when Jared played a teenage character named Dean Forrester in Gilmore Girls back in his early career. The boys joke about Jared being the 'first Dean' a lot at Cons'.
