I have written SO MUCH for my characters and it has never been useful for anyone other than me. We have discussed several times which of the Handbook characters we most relate to... and my answer is always Wizard. XD

My character bios generally top out at 1 side of A4, and that's covering appearence, personality and backstory. But then I'm in the chargen zone and I end up making half a dozen backup characters, just in case, and then it starts to pile up. And they all end up on *The List* anyway.

Writing for my characters varies anywhere from 'here is the basic concept of their build, and a name' to 'here is every major event in their life, ordered by age, with how that event shaped their personality'
