"Shadow Realm" in the title and they don't leave shadows, I feel like that's important.

Goddamnit. I actually made the assumption that he might've been the other Daemon, then talked myself out of it when watching your reaction last week. Even based my argument on Granny having all the powers in the village and being the only one to be able to see Daemons.

Danji blindsided me. I though the partner was going to be the other girl that was kidnapped, but same as the shadow thing, I forgot that Daemons come in pairs, boy and girl. Heck, they even reinforce that fact with the two aliens so once Danji comes clean, you are "that's right!". Masterful storytelling. As is the way they depict Yuru's feelings of betrayal. As much as my heart goes to the little Daemon that has been his lifelong friend, from Yuru's perspective, after all the shit he's seen and learned in the past episodes, after the behind-the-scenes maneuverings done by those around him it is natural that he would snap at this point (the fat man, aka the shaman, was not clean by a mile. HE was the leader, or at least a leader of the bandits that attacked Yuru throughout his life). Now, before he goes to rescue Fake Asa, Danji's partner, Yuru has to first come to terms with Danji's situation. I had previously though that there would come a moment when this would happen between Yuru and Danji, but more along the lines of the Higashi Village bandits trying to coerce Danji to betray Yuru. But again Arakawa-sensei blindsided me. The way she goes from goofy to dead serious while carefully laying the groundwork for really awesome moments is just priceless. I love this series. This is not "Fullmetal Alchemist 2.0". This stands on its own. And stands proudly.

In Japanese mythology and folklore, the "Yomi" in the title (translated as "Shadow Realm"), is somewhat equivalent to the Christian "Purgatory". It is a realm between the realms (Heavenly Realm, Earthen Realm, Hellish Realm) that souls must traverse to reach the afterlife, and where lost souls will try to lead them astray. Hence why, in Asa's flashback of how she got "Release", the places is depicted as a narrow path that crosses a vast darkness. Had Asa fallen from the path, she would've died for real. As you said, that is one hell of an important element, for all the Yomi represents, and I'm so damn eager to see how Arakawa-sensei develops it into the story and its worldbuilding.
