The slow burn of S3 has been exactly the way I liked it, and while some will call it slow, the pacing has me LOCKED IN

Especially with season 1, it was highly episodic with the smaller pieces gradually building but sort of standing on their own. Now the plot has shifted to something more unified, so it can feel like less is happening. For those of us who enjoy it, the rich characterization and connections between previous events is really enjoyable. I think the whole thing with the drawing is Maomao knowing what they're trying and intentional giving misleading answers which leads into the follow on conversation which is another hint that those around her understand Maomao's feelings including her reluctance to get too involved.

I remember it took a bit in s1 to hook me so ya that fits and why i liked seasons like these more cause of the overaching plots rather than a handful of small ones

As a big fan of this anime (watched s1 simulcasting and was thrilled about S2 happening) I think it was a good transition because the early season pulls you in and then you get to know the cast and world etc so you’re more immersed and the plot moving forward in a less episodic way just makes sense 🤷🏻‍♀️ (but that’s just how it was for me)

Yeah IMO the transition is handled really well. They look to be continuing to handle it at 1 LN to 12 episodes, which is down right leasurely compared to the majority of adaptions, but I think the source really needs it.
