Finally taking a look at the SPARCstation IPX to see what kind of shape it's in. Good news: it is in kind of okay shape.

About 6 months ago, I cleaned up my SPARCstation IPX. Mine came from Colorado School of Mines. I have a kit to replace the guts of the power supply with a PCB and modern PSU modules. I also have done the batteries on the NVRAM chips for three or four Sun systems, so I've gotten pretty good at fixing and reprogramming those. If you want help with your cute little IPX, I'm in the Denver metro and would be happy to help.

Well that's convenient, because I'm also in the Denver metro! Where did you get the PSU kit?

In the late 90s we had one of these at work. It was too old to use as a workstation. Interestingly it was probably only 5 or 6 years old, which isn't very old at all anymore. I guess that was back when Moore's Law made old computers feel much older.

Another local gave me the github link to a PCB project (https://github.com/hanshuebner/ipx-psu-replacement). I have the PCBs made at PCBway and ordered parts from Mouser and soldered it together myself. I have one or two kits of PCBs and parts left over. I needed one, but ordered 10 and send a few out on one of the vintage computer mailing lists.

I won't lie, I was a little uneasy watching the prying with the lock block still in place (think early kensington lock). It looks good, I am pretty confident that all that needs to be done is a recap in the PSU, a full replacement is very unlikely to be required.
