Net Booting an RS/6000 from 1996 with NIM

Net booting an RS/6000 43p model 140 with IBM NIM, or Network Installation Management. This will let us install AIX 5.1 over the network onto a Seagate SCSI drive in the RS/6000. Love seeing these old system P servers up and running. They are built like tanks and are awesome machines.

Not sure if this is true of this gear, but older IBM SCSI gear wants the bootable drives to have HIGH numbers, like 6 (as the adapter is usually 7) instead of 0. Probably not important with a single drive but if you set multiple drives on a BlueSCSI it might matter - if you can get the BlueSCSI to work with your IBM adapter. I have not been able to do it in my PS/2s. They work fine with an Adaptec adapter, but not with the IBM. Why did IBM want you to go down from 6 instead of up like most everyone else? Because if you look at that standard, that how it's SUPPOSED to work. Everyone else does it backwards from the original standard.

My PC Server 500 uses ID 6 for the service partition or whatever IBM called the partition with ADFs, But it does boot from other IDs

very useful info, I'll keep that in mind when I true the blue scsi

@grain bread - I can boot from other IDs as well, as long as I set them up in the System Partition. But the default seems to be 6. @clabretro I also tried a ZuluSCI Wide on the wide bus of my PS/2 95 but it worked even worse than the BlueSCSI. BlueSCSI would read and write but eventually time out. ZuluSCSI would not write at all. Both logs show a large number of bus resets. But this is only on the IBM SCSI adapter. On the Adaptec that is also in the system, it works 100%, no issues, but of course the PS/@ wants to boot from the IBM controller. That may not be an issue in the RS/6000, depending upon the controller.
