Time to invest in some spare belt kits and new pinch rollers! And oh boy, parallel port storage devices—for people who hate performance and having spare CPU cycles :)

Dante Aubert

Maybe look for a tape library!

Glen Dady

Should be some interesting video coming up. I have two NAS servers (TrueNAS and UNAS Pro) that backup to a Proxmox Backup Server which hosts two Dell TL2000 tape libraries with four half height drives. Remember the 3-2-1 Rule, three copies of your data on two different media types, and one copy off-site.

Exciting videos coming

I wouldn't say the old cat _likes_ her but they are co-existing now lol.

Tapes! I had a few different tape backups at home and I used several different ones in datacenters. I really should get a tape backup for some of my older machines that I can't get BlueScsi/ZuluSCSI to work on. You WILL need software, usually from the manufacturer, except perhaps for Unix systems with SCSI drives - you should be able to just use tar (since it originally meant "tape archive") as long as the drive is recognized.

Little request for the tape video: the _sound_ of each tape drive. :-)

Pavlovsky

Yes! Excited for the tape video. You should get some dat tapes on the sun sparc lunchbox as well to round out the general types of tape. I have proxmox backup server running my lto4 tape drive. I don’t think it’ll support your lto2 tape drive due to its age. In general those lto drives could just be written too via tar. I haven’t done that myself. Proxmox backup server formats and does backup scheduling. 3-2-1 as has been said before

Tape drives - for when you need seriously air-gapped backups. Don’t forget to do test restores on your tapes occasionally to make sure they are still good!

So much comedy in the tape drive video 😂😂😂 That was great! Reminded me of trying to solve parallel port device issues by switching the port between Normal, ECP, EPP, ECP+EPP and changing that setting whenever things randomly broke. Printers... lol, massive golden "girl stuff" paperclip Is Chloe a ragdoll? :)

clabretro

we're not totally sure but pretty sure she's a ragdoll!

Tape is interesting :-) Back in the days I used to work with Exabyte tape drives and libraries... they had some interesting libraries like the 440/480 which was a carousel-style library... Exabyte were based in Colorado I think... they pushed the 8mm standard to the max with their Mammoth drives... sadly I think Exabyte are no longer... and libraries are hard to find, and most likely need work in order to function... Almost all tape drives are LTO now kinda sad ;-)

It was me! I sent you the StarLAN card :-)

clabretro

Ha, sorry! You'll get full proper credit when it sneaks into a video!

Cedric Roijakkers

I saw you mention that the tape stuff came in a lot of packing peanuts, and that you threw them all away. You know that most packing peanuts are made of corn starch, and if you put them in water, they fully dissolve into nothing. Just put water in the sink, dump the peanuts in them, and then flush the water out. No need to put them in garbage bags.

clabretro

Interesting, they're definitely the starchy ones. I haven't thrown them away yet, I'll try that out.
