Queue's empty! Time to shovel more posts in to the posting furnace. It's funny because I was worried tumblr locking down anon asks for registered users only meant I'd get less asks, but I'm still getting more than I publish. There's stuff I wanted to write that is probably buried under two or three pages of unanswered messages at this point. But even if I do these in big batches over an hour or two, I have to maintain the balance, I guess.

gbdudersfeed asked: Do you think Sonic Superstars has the chance to become a video game with a blue hedgehog named "Sonic" that likes to eat chili dogs?

(Catch this one quick, it might be posted by the time you see this link. It's short, though.)

melcodriggs asked: I am 100% certain this won't happen, but I keep thinking "what if Trip from Superstars loses her helmet and it's revealed she's a tweaked design for Sticks?" (It's just her color scheme making me think that.)

melcodriggs asked: Do you think Shantae would have gone on to become a series if it hadn't leaned so hard on its cast being full of busty women? Like, the games run the gamut from great to awful for me personally, but I can never shake the kind of gross, soft porn-y vibes it gives me.

Generally speaking I only post links because sometimes in the run-up to these getting posted, I might add or change things about the posts. Ergo, visiting the link is the only way to make sure what you're reading is the most up-to-date version of the post without me having to constantly also edit things here on Patreon. Once a post goes live, the link stops working. Publishing dates are also subject to change if I move things around.

You can submit an ask here, though tumblr is picky about it now and forces you to have a login.

Don't know if it's worth pointing out but, just to clarify re: the Shantae ask, I may have phrased it poorly. I wasn't saying it didn't become a series, rather I was trying to suggest the cheesecake factor allowed it to stick in people's heads enough that it eventually did. The original GBC game felt extremely clunky when I played it on 3DS and some part of my brain thinks nobody would care about it without the half-naked women. It's extremely reductive, but at the same time I've got very mixed emotions seeing as I'm currently trying to 100% the most recent release (which genuinely plays better than the third game, in my opinion) while also being more than a little grossed out by all the TnA, y'know?

The GBC version of Shantae is a little clunky, yeah. I remember not liking that the disposable shop items eventually become necessary to progress through the game. But I also remember being blown away by the graphics; Shantae stretched the limits of the GBC more than any game. It had SO much color and animation. Most GBC games look like they would run on the NES, and Shantae blows them all out of the water.

Whoops, Patreon does that dumb thing Facebook does where enter submits instead of creates a line break. Gotta use shift+enter. Anyway, I also think it was a case of the game being "the last one out the door." It feels like the last major GBC release and was actually quite the rarity for a while as a result. It was also from a time where expectations were different for portable games. I started thinking about this with regards to the GBA Castlevania games and how those evolved. Portable games were never given the same budgets or considerations as console games. In a world where we have Order of Ecclesia it's easy to look back at Circle of the Moon and go "wow this is so janky" but at the time Circle of the Moon felt like a revelation after The Castlevania Adventure, you know? By the standards of what people expected of portable games at the time, Shantae was wild stuff.
