Hey there, I'm Aci and today I'll tell you about Worlds Adrift and why it failed.

Worlds Adrift is one of the best games I have ever played, but almost nobody seems to know it.

The world of worlds adrift is made up of bunch of floating islands over an endless void and clouds. All islands in the game were super unique and actually player made.

As for gameplay, the probably most similar game alot of you know is sea of thieves.

But instead of everyone having the same three ship types, you can build your own air ship from scratch.

You had a grappling hook to move around on islands and get to your airship, and it was actually REALLY fun to use.

The game is physics based, so you start of with a frame and then attach motors, sails and so on on it, to make sure your airship doesn't crash.

There are different tiers of materials, motors and sails, which means you can upgrade your ship and actually keep the progress when you log out.

There were multiple island regions divided by "storm walls", one harder to cross than the other. You had to upgrade your ship to get through into a new region.

You upgrade your ship by going to different islands and finding materials for better parts and crafting them.

This was the main, but also pretty much the only gameplay loop of the game.

It was really fun to explore the islands and find new materials and early parts of a storyline on them.

But, of course it wasnt that easy. There were also some enemies for you to fight, and one ambient creature.

The ambient creature was the jellyfish, which would just float around the islands peacefully.

Thuntomites or Beetles were little bugs that would attack you if you cut down trees near them and the bigger Manta Rays would migrate around the world in groups and even attack your airship sometimes!

And of course, you also had other players to worry about. While lower level ships were usually faster, because they were made from lighter materials, you definetly don't want to engage in a fight with a crew in a higher level ships.

But then again, air combat was incredibly fun and just looked amazing!

For future updates, the devs -aka bossa studios- had a BUNCH of stuff planned.

They wanted to expand on the story with more buildings, actual quests on the islands, possible NPCs, more puzzles, buildables, materials and creatures!

One of the most anticipated creatures where sky whales! Think of them like the kraken or megalodon in sea of thieves.

There would only be a certain number of them at any point, and they would attack the player's airship. When you defeat them, they would of course drop some really cool stuff as well.

So, if the game is so great, why did it fail?

It all started with general discontent about the new updates. Instead of adding more content, story, buildables or islands, the devs were mainly fixing bugs and doing stuff behind the scenes.

Now, that's of course very important for a game, but paired with them removing old features for performance reasons "temporarily" and no new real content for a long time, it does upset players.

Additionally, there weren't enough players for the game to be commercially viable, so it was essentially making a loss for the entirety of the development.

After a while, the devs actually announced to focus more on new features and to follow player feedback more closely, but i think that's when money ran out.

Just a few months later, they announced the End of the World community event and the end of worlds adrift.

Since the game was exclusively online, you can no longer play it after the server were shut down, and you also can't host your own servers or lobbies.

This is something alot of people actually requested, but sadly we never got it.

But, there might be hope.

Fans of the game have started working on their own version of it, voids adrift.

It's not an exact copy, but inspired by worlds adrift and has the same feel and ideas.

They actually released a grapplinghook demo a while ago, and it feels very similar to worlds adrift.

Overall, I think worlds adrift had HUGE potential and I'd love to see it back, in one form or another.

It was one of my favourite games of ALL time, and I really miss it.

Have you heard of worlds adrift before? Or have you maybe even played it? If so, let me know in the comments down below!

If there are any other games you'd like me to make videos like this on, also let me know!

HUGE shoutout to my Aci Cult leaders on Youtube and Patreon, Blink, Ripe cucumber, Tony House and Wynog, thank you SO much for your support, I hope you enjoy your special perks!

But for now, thank you VERY much for watching, I hope you enjoyed it and I'll SEA you next time!
