Tomorrow will have 1 Crimson Eternal chapter and a map of the region for the war.

Click here for chapter 25! It is 1399 words. A bit of a shorter chapter.

Thanks for the Chapter

Okay where’s Babe the Blue Ox! Cause Paul Bunyan just touched down

Hmmm this begs the question that if things like ants and blade of ants give less than "1 life". Are there also things that give more than "1 life"? Like if it is by lifespan.... what the hell happens if she kills a pseudo immortal? 😶

Aphanvahrius

Ant lifespan seems to be about 1 year, and iirc she failed to gain any levels even after killing thousands of them. Meaning it likely doesn't add up, but rather it's a binary thing where she gets either 0 or 1 depending on whether the minimum lifespan threshold was met. Not sure why she was getting notifications for the 0s tho (I think she mentioned that she was back after the ant thing?)

Shaun McDonough

It was mentioned before (several chapters back) that things like ants DID give lives. It was just a very small amount (I.e. 0.00000001 or something for example). Note that this means that it is NOT binary as a very small amount is an amount and not zero.

Aphanvahrius

I'm not sure. I remember it being mentioned that killing ants did give notifications, but not whether it actually counted towards the next level. Regardless, even if they do give some "exp" it can't be proportional to the lifespan, as thousands of ants didn't amount to a single death despite the sum of their lifespan being thousands of years. Same as a deer giving her one death with about a 6 years lifespan and humans past level 100 with the presumed lifespan of 200 years giving also only a single death. So it stands to reason that either it is a 0 or 1 thing or it's governed by something like a sigmoid function (probably a bit "squeezed" and shifted 5 to the right) and thus it is not technically a 0/1 thing but in practice it pretty much is.

Shaun McDonough

It was mentioned that it DID give some. Just not much. This is why she is wondering if it is proportional to lifespan. I don't know why you keep harping on about lifespan as I never said that it was anyway? I just said IF it was (as she was hypothesizing that as a possibility this chapter). Also it is possible to be proportional to lifespan in many different ways. Stepped/incremental proportione, exponential proportions, multiplicative proportions etc etc. It doesn't have to be linear. As to whether I personally believe it is proportional to lifespan? I think it is possible (but not likely) to be solely proportional to lifespan. I think that even IF it was proportional to lifespan then there would still likely be other factors as well. Either that or lifespan could just be related to the ACTUAL causal variable 🤷‍♂️ Edit: or not related at all and it's incidental so far 🤔

Lijwent

I say it's the system restricting her, if she'd get like the level of the beings she kills as progression, she'd be leveling too fast. Or it's something like the amount of life energy beings have, so proportional to their life expectancy and size/mass, with a ceiling (and the system steals the excess)

Shaun McDonough

I could certainly see it being like this (especially having a ceiling). "Life energy" could be an interesting way that it works. I could see other factors affecting that as well if that's the case (I.e. metabolism rate). That way a tree which has massive mass and life expectency would be somewhat offset by it's very low metabolism rate... thoughts Lijwent?

Aphanvahrius

Here's the relevant quote from chapter 15. "When I tried to kill some ants on the roadside this morning, I only got tiny fractions of a ‘being’ counted to the total. Fractions so small that they don’t even show a difference. Just makes it repeat the same number again. No matter how many of them I kill, even in the thousands." Now, Aria does say that she did get some 'fractions of a being', but she also says that it didn't show a difference. How would she know if she actually gets any fraction or not if there is no difference anywhere? Imo, likely just as with her hypothesis of a minimum lifespan being a factor, the thing about getting some fractions of a being is also just a hypothesis (based on getting a notification). Could be true, could be false. So it is possible that's it is a 0 or 1 thing.

Shaun McDonough

"I only got tiny fractions of a 'being' counted to the total." ^ This is written as a statement of fact, not a hypothesis. Now, it is possible to be wrong in a statement of fact. But it is clearly not her guessing, it is her stating. "Fractions so small that they don't show a difference." ^ Once again a statement. This time however it is using some figurative language as well ("don't even show a difference"). In common usage this type of language implies that their is no RESULTING (or real) difference. Not no difference at all. Note how in contrast there is no common usage of language where we use "small fraction" to be zero (although interestingly there is common usage of "zero/none" to mean a small fraction). Language is weird... Put together in the context this language is basically saying. The amount of 'being' counted is basically so small to be irrelevant, but not 0. I.e in more mathematical terms. 1000 x 0.0000000001 is not 0. But is still effectively 0 for the purpose of counting natural numbers. It would be great if the author could clarify if this was their intention though. 👍

Aphanvahrius

I suppose, although the deciding factor here would be if she is capable of perceiving fractions of granted deaths. If she can, then the interpretation that she is stating a fact would be correct. If she can't, then the interpretation that said statement was a guess based on receiving a notification would be correct. Now, as for it being a super small difference that is in practice same as zero, imo the sigmoid function I mentioned earlier is a perfect example. It's something that is widely used when you need what is essentially a 0 or 1 classification without it actually being a proper two value function, but something that can act as one in practice. Although, if that were the case, it would require that values super close to 1, that are not exactly 1 would need to be counted as 1 for the death count.

Aphanvahrius

Another interesting thing is that she gets no notifications for grass and comments that it's the same as bugs, but she did get those repeating notifications for ants, right? Did she also get ones for grass and it simply wasn't shown?

Nicole Uhlhorn

Thanks for the chapter, a quick question though, uhm what happens to ch.24? 🤔 is it missing or just some kind of counting error?

WolfWrites

Wdym? It's there and it's titled chapter 24. Go back and look again because you seem to have skipped over it.

Nicole Uhlhorn

Thx, must have been some kind of error since I went over it several times before I wrote that comment and it always went from 23 to 25. But thankfully it’s there now. Love the story btw.

Ungrave

Just wait until Aria finds out that using paper is considered killing trees...
