I got to do this promo art for author Mia K Rose recently, and she was such a delight to work with! These are the main characters for her new book, From the Cold, and it was a nice reprieve (mentally, at least) from the hot weather we've been getting lately.

I did a couple of sketch iterations for the female character, Claris, as the first sketch I did just didn't quite feel interesting enough for a dagger wielding, lynx taming heroine, and I'm happier with the more dynamic posing in the final.

These were the sketches for Torsten's portrait and the full body piece. As usual for these pieces, I laid down a 3D base to guide lighting/colors/anatomy and some props, then sketched over and used those two in tandem as I rendered the paintings over top.

I hope this is interesting!! I am always able to show more of my process with commercial projects like this since I have better record of my steps.

Please let me know if you have any questions or are interested in my process!!

This is so cool! Do the authors just give you a description or do they also let you read the book? I love seeing your progress like this!

I typed out a huge response to this and Patreon deleted it lmao ._. Ironically authors tend to be less descriptive than private clients (such as for D&D commissions). In this case, Mia gave me some description and a Pinterest board for inspiration! Some authors can be pretty particular about details and really lay everything out, while others are more hands-off and let me do my own thing for the most part. I tend to work better with more flexibility since I like to be able to change things mid-way if something isn't working. I can end up getting kind of railroaded into a composition/posing/etc problem if the project is inflexible where I would have normally scrapped an started over if it were up to me. (That wasn't the case here!!) I love being able to go "This isn't working" and start over, otherwise it can be like trying to fit a square block into a round hole. I prefer to rework things instead of push along, I do think it's probably a common issue with artists where a piece doesn't "feel right" but you have to keep going and make it work. That's why in this case I went a different way with Claris's portrait, since I had been working on the first for a while and it just didn't spark joy. My favorite thing is when authors will provide me the scene where the character in question is being introduced and described for the first time. I haven't been provided a whole book yet haha!!

It happens lol but that's interesting! Seeing more into your process and how different requests play out.

That's incredible and very nice work on the romantic posing with the cold background
