For MiSTer and Pocket FPGA users, how many of you use an automatic updater to install cores in your devices?

Comments

David Allen

Can’t vote twice but I use updaters for both

Mike

automatic updaters are the best. Wish there was a way to set up for latest cores like that, but may be harder on mister fpga

Pixel Cherry Ninja

I always use Updaters for both. I only use manual if what I want isn't available via an Updater.

Unlovedhomie

Updater on pocket. Don't have a mister sadly

Angel Cruz

One of those answers should of been auto updates for both.. I also auto update on both

Mike V.

Updaters en ambos

Matija

Been using AMMiSTer to update arcade cores lately, developing nicely!

Robert Dennis

Add me to the list of updaters on both

JonathanValls

Update_All, if its possible i only want to play

Michael Turner

Update all, I don’t bother with manual at all.

maxh

i use updaters, but copied the cps-2 files manually after i didn't find them on my sdcard

1040STF

Updaters on both. Haven't found the time yet to figure out how to play the beta games on Pocket yet.

Nick Delia

Updaters on both MiSTer and Analogue Pocket

tony bell

Regular update all , but also manually copy files over from time to time

Spiff

updaters on both… if a file isn’t on update_all, its not stable enough for me to bother. I can wait another month or 6 for a 20 year old game

Titchgamer

Update_all is the way :)

al3x1980

I use both updaters!

Antonio Negro

Manual occurs when updates fails so it's more a glitch than an option

MoonZ

both updaters as well. And I enjoy watching the script in progress 😊

MEM3NTO

Updaters on both platforms

patreoner

Updaters are a key feature of the MiSTer platform for me!

Mat Azel

updaters on both mister and pocket

_C64 CUSTOMS_

updater, don't want to mess around with manual installations :)

Alarm

Mainly updaters, manual for cores where it isn't covered by an updater.

Tonch

Updaters on both. I can do it manually if I have to, but the updaters are so much more convenient, especially when the platforms have such frequent updates and improvements.

YoshiDragon

update_all + Pocket Updater Win App of course. This is a big advantage of MiSTer + Pocket. :)

Lukas Schaper

I use updaters for both. It's Just convenient if it works and on the Mister there's so many cool things getting released that it's almost impossible to manage everything without updater. I guess it will be the same with pocket soon.

Frank McDonald

Both for me. I've always used update_all on MiSTer but given how finicky the pocket is for manual updates i didn't bother loading any cores till there was one available.

Keith F. Kelly

MiSTer's update_all has saved me from having to spend hundreds of hours chasing down exactly the right files and setting it all up by hand. If something isn't automatically included by update_all, then I don't bother.

Adrian Nabarro

Updaters for both (voted MiSTer because I use/update that the most)

sromero

For me, the main difference between the MiSTer and other FPGAs is the update_all.sh script. I don't have time to mess with manual installations... I don't event test new released/beta cores published by people on github until they appear automatically in update_all....

DenizB

Updaters for both. Manual installation and maintenance is too much hassle. I don't really like the way the MiSTer updater works though, I understand that the embedded nature of the "companion" Linux makes creating a more robust updater harder than if it was a normal environment, but still some of the choices in the updater are just unfortunate (deleting files before ensuring the replacements are successfully in place being one, another is the reliance on always downloading a script from the internet to do the actual work). The Pocket updaters (working in a nicer environment of course) are pretty nice.

Andrea Bogazzi

I use whatever is available. Updaters first, manually for new betas. Pocket i didn't start yet

Dr. Manga

Updater for me (although it's important to have manual if something goes wrong)

isfet

updaters for both

Philip Lawson

Mainly use Update_All, however if there's a beta or core I'd like to try that isn't part of it, I'm happy enough to install manually. Generally however, Update_All is my go to first. :)

Anthony

updaters on both mister and pocket

David Moylan

props to theypsilon for the excellent work on update_all. it's one of the things that makes MiSTer so nice to use. new stuff comes out, run update_all and check it out. golden.

Adam Davis

Yep, updaters 👍🏼

TaylorBat

updaters on both mister and pocket

jose rosales

I think its different for the Pocket. I manually install the cores, but use the updaters to pull the roms so i don't have to bother with that step. So I would have to say both, but i can't vote both.

Dr Tenma

Mostly updaters for both

AlexK

Updaters for both

Chris

Updaters for both

dz9

Updaters, and installing the Jotego stuff has always been hit or miss with the Pocket updater drag & drop feature. I do them manually now.

Konrad

I practically only use update_all from the Ypsilon Only once in a while a special core may deserve enough attention for a manual installation, but it's mostly inconvenient - also because of leftover files afterwards

Saiyan

I use 99,90% of time updaters

deathr0w

updaters so much easier

Videodr0me

exclusively update_all. That's why i also support Ypsilon. I think update_all is one of the reasons for the rising popularity of mister. It saves countless hours of tedious work....

Anonymous

updaters as much as possible, for both systems

Syl

I can't even imagine to manually update all the cores on my Pocket. Updaters all the way.

Michael Di Filippo

After all the cores are added via the updater it's so much easier to manage everything manually. For example I added the Punisher manually since it was from another developer who is using the CPS2 core. makes no sense to run the updater AGAIN for one game. https://github.com/dyreschlock/pocket-extras

Xukkorz

Honestly the problem I've found was keeping up with the betas on Pocket. I'm doing plenty of manual installs but its really hard to tell what is in beta vs released for pocket so I'm just not sure what to update.

Riccardo Maria

I always use updaters for BOTH MiSTerFPGA and PocketFPGA.

IndieRetroHack

I try to use the auto updates for both MiSTer and Pocket... for these Jotego releases, I do it manually but would prefer the updater approach.

Pezz82

The pocket would be a nightmare to do manually, mister I usually update using update all but manual update for bits not included

Thorias

I always use update_all to keep my MiSTer up to date.

WildHairZero

Use UPDATERs for both, don't have the time or smarts to keep up with all the manual updates and changes.

Alberto Albericio

I used to do it manually but I now use updaters along with some manual fixes :)

Edin Cruz

Sometimes i use both but manually is harder

Mx Beanie

Mainly due to the *pace* of development right now, I'm using mattpannella's CLI to keep yours and others' cores up-to-date. I'm considering writing my own rich Python cli for the task as it's the news I want more than the auto-updates, but it would be nice to have support for key-based PocketFPGA updates like you do for MISTer.

Polyh3dron

I use updaters only for both MiSTer and Analogue Pocket.

2026-09-06 20:00 Is there a way for Pocket Updater to connect to our patreon subscription to grab beta releases? It's a hassle to manually download betas and I'm sure I'm missing some.

I do whatever works 😃 it's satisfying making things work
