Yay, new content! Listening to Tucker Carlson wax nonsensically about evolution reminds me of the recently departed (and much missed) Daniel Dennett who, having listened to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach's own exposition of Darwinian evolution, responded with "Shmuley, your understanding of evolution is breathtakingly ignorant!"

Chomagerider

I find Chris's contempt for Joe endlessly entertaining 🤣

Andy First

I think if you asked Destiny about Peter Boghossian you might be similarly disappointed as when Hasan was asked about Lex Friedman. Actually, you might even hear something similar if you asked Destiny about Lex as well.

Matt Dear

wtaf, "lex is the only centrist", jesus wept. What a bunch of melons.

Kgar

This is the sanity I need after surfing the discourse. Thx guys.

Adam Sher

Listening to more streamer analysis feels the same as smoking a pack of cigarette

Andy First

Is there any evidence Andrew Wakefield actually signed that letter as opposed to being added as a joke by someone critical of it?

Christy Kilgore

Used to think it was weird that Tucker was a massive Grateful Dead fan. It’s starting to make sense!

Nina Davies

The Studies Show Podcast also looked at the Cass Report this week. One of the hosts kept saying 'the evidence is so non-existent I felt myself becoming radicalised'. I listened to a range of podcasts on the subject from Owen Jones, across the middle ground and into the hideous right. It was a very sobering experience. Owen Jones referred to Cass as a 'RETIRED Pediatrician' and repeated the misinformation endlessly and his guests didn't put him right. It was every bit as bad as listening to Joe Rogan.

Tucker on Alex Jones: ‘He’s really channeling some stuff…..The supernatural is real. There were people called prophets (they made them off supplements).’

S Garvey

I think Hasan's embrace of Lex is tactical. the demographic/audience he's attempting to appeal to is young men and he's pretty desperate to NOT be "gay." According to the zeitgeist Progressives are p*ssies and not masculine like RW'ers like Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate. this requires occasionally counter signaling non-woke attitudes. Lex is a safe bet in that category.

aneladgam_varelse

Idk if I remember correctly, but I recall that Brett’s theory on telemeters weren’t pseudoscience, it was just overblown. Like: good discovery on technical thing, not revolutionary theory worth of Nobel prize

Adam Sher

I was not aware that Ancient Civilizations TV was meant to he something other than a fictional what if show to be optimally consumed while under the influence.

Good ep. Just about the right length for my gym workout, so keep em coming around that length ;). Just re the last item and science communications being in your wheelhouse - scicom's not really my thing, but as I was reading Moscovici's opus on this, my wikipedia wanderings brought me to the Public Understanding of Science journal's 2016 competition around "Why does the ‘deficit concept’ not go away?". I was disappointed enough by the quality of the winning papers that I decided to write my own. The relevant part for people here is probably only the first bit on Moscovici - mainly because it's a more in-depth intro than you'll get from wikipedia and his work is at the intersection of social psychology and science communications, which sounds like DtG's bailiwick - https://eidgenossen.medium.com/the-continuing-appeal-of-the-deficit-model-473a3a2be5c1

Hasan: my luxurious lifestyle is socialist cause

I had also heard criticism, from a few sources, of the Cass Review citing poor evidence because there are no double-blinded RCT studies for trans healthcare, but to double-blind such treatment would be both unethical, and pretty much impossible. It did seem a fairly reasonable criticism to me as a layman when I first heard it, but I wasn't too sure, it seemed like a massive oversight, one that would have been rightly damned if it really was an accurate representation. So far, I've not seen this argument made by any serious commentors/organisations. Thanks for your explanation Chris, it was really helpful in understanding the limits of the argument. There's also an FAQ on the Cass review website, that specifically addresses these claims. https://cass.independent-review.uk/home/publications/final-report/final-report-faqs/ I've not seen any serious, comprehensive, criticisms of the Cass Review yet. The only thing I had found previously was a 2021 critical piece in SBM over the 2020 NICE review, also headed by Cass. From what I can tell, AJ Eckert's articles on SBM are a good source for info on trans healthcare. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/a-critical-look-at-the-nice-review/ I believe the NICE review is referenced in the final report, and is the part I've seen referenced when making the Double-blinded RCT criticism, as in the below tweet. https://twitter.com/Naozymandias/status/1778431236265898448 I think it's a watershed moment in the debate, and I do think there are quite a lot of positives to be taken from the report, it decries the lack of access to healthcare, admonishes the toxicity of the debate (it states toxicity on both sides, which is a bit charitable imo), and appeals for compassion towards the individuals seeking treatment. I would hope that the emphasis is given to the compassion, rather than using the report as a tool to further reduce access to healthcare for gender non-conforming individuals in the UK. But, to be honest, I've not seen an awful lot from the UK press, or politics, that makes me too hopeful in that regard. Sorry for the essay, this is a subject I've put a lot of time and effort into trying to understand. Not least because I've had a few friends fall down the weird, aggressively anti-trans, rw rabbit hole.

Ymirsdreams

Anyone in the patreon affected by gender related stress: best wishes. It must be an especially difficult time right now.

Interview with Flint Dibble would be cool. Pls ask him how prepared to debate on Rogan and if he felt like future of Big Archeology was put on his shoulders

Daniel Richards

It is so tiresome listening to grievance mongering. They're such whiners. Hearing hancock set himself up with this detailed takedown of Dibble was infuriating. If you're setting yourself as Galileo, why not at least attempt to act with a quiet determinism in the face of it, rather than smugly asserting yourself as such. It just oozes with this pathetic self righteousness that is so distasteful. Maybe I'm just sympathetic to Dibble, but I couldn't imagine preparing a slideshow, on what was apparently meant to be a debate on the subject, trying to discredit your opponent by demonstrably false claims. I guess he's doing it to appeal to a potential audience.

Unfitforpurpose

The Cass section in the last pod was salutary. The practical effect of those recommendations on trans healthcare is going to be devastating with the NHS under the strain that it is. And the whole thing feels like the culmination of a years long campaign by certain people and media orgs to drive trans people out of public life. So a reminder to not act like guruites (what's the term I'm looking for here) when reacting to it is important.

Zvi Pardes

Gravitation is "only a theory"...maybe Tucker can do us all a favour and do his own research with good old fashioned empirical fact-finding.

brianshmrian

What is "The Great Khan" and "Scientist Man" a reference to? I think it's hilarious, but does it come from somewhere?

Linda Sears

"Big Archeology." I can imagine lots of people in Indiana Jones style costumes jumping out of their digs, wielding Paleolithic tools, and chasing poor old Graham Hancock across the Sahara.

Trees

I know absolutely nothing about Colin Wright, so I might be missing context, but to me those tweets sounded like someone trying to expose Bret without leaving him an opening to dismiss it as bad faith.

Kyle Dun

I think I like the supplementary materials more than the decoding episodes. Another great upload. How petty and ridiculous was Hancock. Cringe af.

Norbs

Quite frustrating when matt claimed the cass review wasnt ideologically inspired when Cass herself follows multiple anti trans accounts on twitter. Pretty nitpicky reaction from the boys i think probably in an attempt to stay on the fence. Cass also walked back some very major points of the study

Milquetoast Ramen

I hadn't heard that clip of Eric, but it gave me the chills. I forgot he can be just as disingenuous as his brother on top of his arrogance

Tim Tripp

No Joe you don't understand.

Tim Tripp

I am here to request a free subscription that you won't honour. I found that very funny.

Chris Clark

Thanks for making me aware of Hasan Piker chaps. Thanks for that.

Subodh Kafle

What the fuck is the phenomenonological level of evolution? One of the most nonsensical things Bret has ever said.

collapsing

I see yon Russell Brand is getting baptized now , Father. Something about leaving the past behind and being reborn. Would that be an ecumenical matter Father, or just progression of the grift..

Subodh Kafle

A few years back Chris contrasted himself with someone (I think maybe Scott Alexander?) talking about how he read a book about advanced ancient human Civilizations, was moderately credulous, then read some academic rebuttals and no longer believed it, whereas the guy went on scuba diving trips investigating ruins and came to the same conclusion. Was that book the Hancock Fingerprints book?

privateer

Flint made one of his best points in the last five minutes. Graham was asking archeologists to tone down their criticisms. And they should all just get along. And Flint basically said that the Graham on Joe Rogan is different than the Netflix Graham.

Mike Nelson

I enjoy these supplementary materials episodes. After weeks of streamers, I am happy to catch up with the regular cast of clowns.

Ymirsdreams

I have adopted Chris' x2 speed podcast setting. I now get the mental images of a lot of right leaning chipmunks yelling at me about quotas.

Karen Miscall-Bannon

I just want to thank you guys for listening to these crazy people so I don't have to mess up my algorithms. I want to know about these folks but not at the expense of having to see their drivel show up on my various feeds. So THANK YOU!!

Idan Ca

That Eric “I dont like the feeling in my body” bit from the mic west ep should come with a bloody trigger warning. I was definitely not ready for it, Graham hancock was already taxing enough as it is

David

Much as I generally agree with your criticisms of Rogan, I thought he did a pretty decent job hosting that debate, didn't show too much bias, and even when he's querying whether something "looks" man-made, he's only just expressing what the layman would think, and allowed Flint to fully set him straight without interruption.

Peter

Nice episode fellas. Just some relevant background here re. how twitch income works for streamers - streamers are required by contract to air a certain number of ads per hour because the revenue is split between the streamer and twitch. The amount varies streamer-to-streamer because the default contracts have changed over time to reflect industry norms. but it’s usually 1-2 per hour. If they don’t run the required amount of ads they have to backload the ads, or risk being penalized. Subscribers fees are also split between the streamer and twitch and a fixed amount too, so hasan couldn’t lower the price for his fans, even if he wanted to.
