Join Matt and Chris as they embark on a multi-part journey through the diverse landscapes of Dr. K's content meta.

Alok Kanojia, better known as Dr. K, is a charismatic psychiatrist and online streamer who offers a unique blend of psychological, self-help, and spiritual advice to guide individuals through the complexities of modern life, aiming to help them become Healthy Gamers™.

Dr. K's content is diverse and we found quite a lot to dig through, so we are doing our first(!) multi-part series. In this first episode, we take a critical look at a slightly older piece of content in which Dr. K discusses his views on Ayurvedic medicine, its often overlooked efficacy, and the unacknowledged scientific evidence for its claims. We consider whether his evidence matches the rhetoric and relive our youthful follies as we immerse ourselves in the familiar water of complementary and alternative medicine debates.

In so doing we consider things like whether modern psychology really says everyone is the same and there is only one type of depression, if the Ayurvedic dosha system is as individualistic and versatile as claimed, and whether there actually are many people drinking elephant milk.

In Part 2, we'll delve into Dr. K's recent discussion/debate with Dr. Mike, another popular YouTube doctor. Then Part 3 will focus on the dynamics of Dr. K's long-form, somewhat controversial, mental health-themed interviews with influencers.

Him explicitly saying he can treat conditions as serious as multiple sclerosis, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis with ayuveda .... so irresponsible. Also he's a psychiatrist not a rheumatologist or neurologist so he can't (well...shouldn't) diagnose or treat any of those conditions lmao as it is completely outside of his scope of practice.

peta austen

I had the exact same reaction as Chris to the 🐘/hooves statement 😂

Will

I wish somebody in that stream was there to probe him on the specific links between Jung, Myers Briggs and Ayurvedic medicine. Like, "oh, that's interesting Dr K! What was it in particular in Ayurvedic medicine that had such a profound impact on Jung's work? And from all of Jung's work, how do you know the parts of it that led to the creation of the MBTI came from Ayurveda?" Such a tenuous link, and such obvious wishful thinking. Incredible his audience swallowed it.

Re the paper from Nature Scientific Reports, Matt and Chris seem to think that, because of its obviously poor methodology, it's of very little value. But at least on the face of it, this seems like a reputable peer reviewed journal. Isn't the whole point of peer review to filter out garbage? Doesn't the fact that it made it through peer review indicate that relevant experts thought it was valuable? Why should we trust Matt and Chris over those experts?

Elephant milk really helps in recovery from Malaria but only if you can milk the elephant yourself at dawn, ensuring that the elephant has been infected by the same strain of malaria in the same season. Then it will definitely work.

It's interesting to see the parallels between Dr. K's advocacy of alternative medicine and someone like Joe Rogan's advocacy of alternative media. Start with legit criticisms of the conventional, move on to more questionable criticisms, and then advocate a system that is actually more exposed to most of those very same criticisms. Ironically, Dr. K is a symptom of the failures of modern medicine. How does someone so ignorant of research methodology and basic statistics teach at Harvard Medical School? How does his company have a board with scientific advisors from multiple reputable academic institutions? I asked a family member who is a Rheumatology PA if she's had any patients talk about their Ayurvedic diets and she said no, but that most patients are reluctant to bring up the CAM stuff they are doing with their doctor. She has seen plenty of other "anti-inflammation" diets, however. She generally thinks they don't hurt as most result in the patient eating less excessive amounts of sugar and highly processed junk. Regardless, its not worth confronting the patient and potentially losing trust. Rheum is a field where CAM stuff is popular because conventional medicine strikes out a lot, so there's less of an obvious difference in efficacy to patients.

Good Episode One. I can already tell this will be a DTG classic!

aneladgam_varelse

As Pokémon fan, I call dr K fake gamer boy. Air type is always a dual type (with exception for 1 legendary Pokémon from Unova region) and there is no earth type, pick ground or rock or grass. Pokemon with dual type ground/water are pretty common tho

aneladgam_varelse

And thanks for making example with Poland and Germany <3

„If you’ve got like mage stats, you wanna casting spells, you don’t wanna be meele dps” - yet here I am, trying to make geomancer/bodybuilder in divinity original sin

Tristram Vahan Draper

I'm halfway through the episode and I'm like "oh my god, this is just phrenology"

Mikerpiker

The section on the kinds of foods u should eat (cold and wet vs warm and dry) is up there for one of the funniest bits on the show I've heard haha 😄

aneladgam_varelse

If I’m supposed take dosha seriously, shouldn’t eating inappropriate food for your dosha be dangerous? It seems irresponsible to let people diagnose their dosha for themselves

Adam Sher

After listening to the end, I think the biggest knock on Western Medicine is that Dr K has a medical license

Lillie

I watched the Science is Dope episode, it was great

Emma

I don't know anything about Dr K's mental health stuff. But judging purely on this content my expectations are low. Is it just me or did his entire elaborate Ayurvedic scheme sound like a thinly veiled excuse to humble brag about his own superior brain and spruke bog standard harmful stereotypes about people in larger bodies. Just gross.

Will

Just finished the episode. Damn, that was excruciating. I have an Indian friend who reminds me a lot of Dr K. He (understandably) feels like Hindu ways of knowing were lost as a result of British colonialism and conceives modern medicine's downplaying of Ayurveda as part of the colonial legacy of the west. I've reluctantly watched a few YouTube videos he's recommended to me, and it seems like there are a lot of Indian content creators that amplify this message - the idea seems to be that pretty much everything good in the world came from India millennia ago and that there's a great conspiracy of western elites that are actively trying to bury the truth. Of course, it's understandable where it comes from but clearly pretty crazy stuff. I get the impression Dr K. also thinks this but is too media-savvy to go all in on it.

Sigitas Trečiokas

I love you guys! Your my new gurus 😍 Tell me what should I eat or do to get a galaxy brain? 😀

YellowDreams

Wow. Do people take this guy seriously? Seems like he’s advocating for astrology type approach while claiming it’s not making generalisations about people. Is he a practicing therapist for real?

Jeremy Stewart

Me listening to this: what a load of BS... OMG I'm so a Vata type!

Ben Godek

I’m pretty early in the episode, and Dr K is already very annoying. He implies that if you have a condition that doesn’t respond to medication (depression is the specific example, but the concept would obviously generalize), then modern medicine will just give up on you immediately. This is definitely not the case!

Will

This idea that "western" medicine just puts people in boxes and dolls out the same treatment to everybody without any care for the individual - what an absolute load of bollocks. My dad has multiple serious illnesses and has done for a long time. Whenever he needs surgery or some other treatment (which is pretty often), a room of doctors who specialise in his various ailments will meet and discuss the specifics of his case and figure out the best treatment for him. If that isn't personalized medicine, I don't know what is. It's also standard practice, and there's no way Dr K doesn't know that - it just doesn't fit his narrative.

Brock Bakke

I'm not sure if the problem of arrogantly misunderstanding science is a Dr. K the Ayurvedic medicine practitioner problem, or just a broader problem with M.D holders. As a PI in medical science, I see this pretty commonly that there is a great degree of over confidence in physicians with regards to science itself. Generally unless the MD is followed by a PhD, or the individual runs a competitive research program, there is a tendency to conflate applied medical practice with how medical science is done to the sausage making level.

Andreas Singer

As a German, I am impressed by Matt's expertise on central European geography that he casually uses for his analogy. Not something I would have expected from an Australian. Matt must have the highly revered status of a wise elder in his Australian tribe

Martin Birch

Of all the DTG episodes this was the hardest to listen to. Pseudoscientific bullshit, and an organizational structure based upon false dichotomies and strawmen, ultimately justified only by a degree from an elite institution. Or maybe I’m just jealous. I graduated from an Ivy League Med School and completed Ivy League residency and fellowship. Why am I not a famous streamer?

Brock Bakke

I was listening to this while I wrote the previous comment. I just got to the part where you discussed this problem at the about 2 hour 30 minute mark. I actually see this as a pretty serious problem, particularly where clinical practitioners have taken a social media platform to extrapolate clinical experience over research based observations

JGraves

It’s interesting to hear him talk about hyperspecialization bc the answer to that is to improve collaborative skills— that’s my area of research broadly. It’s just not very sexy bc you have to give up the spotlight.

Níall

Fantastic episode

elcid

There’s a troll on his stream… Daddy’s milk😂 Easier to extract than elephant milk. 😞 sorry.

Soapy Dishwater

Looking forward to seeing how Matt and Chris's character arcs develop over the course of this epic trilogy. Maybe Chris will shift to the dark side next episode and start shilling Ayurveda, and then he and Matt have to fistfight each other shirtless in the rain in a metaphorical battle of ideas. Then in the final episode they team up again with their alternate-universe counterparts to take down the man who was the REAL puppet master, all along, Dr K. That would be cool. Anyway great episode guys!

Sam Leeming

Nice to hear I got a shout out. But in true DTG style my name was mispronounced as Lemming. Like the rodent type animal. I'm honoured.

Russell Halberdt

it's just like Dan was saying on knowledge fight, the ancients knew it and now it's been proven

Tim Tripp

That was painful. So much confidence. His assessment of people sounds like a version of phrenology.

Russell Halberdt

lost my shirt in a bat milk start-up when covid hit

Jason Trock

Wow was not prepared for the next level guru streamer. One look at the Reddit sub and 💯 it’s a cult.

Mark Olague

Excellent episode on Dr. K! I didn’t think I’d be interested, but Matt’s metacommentary, specifically, was very enlightening. So many of these gurus are modern day Gorgias-types, i.e., Sophists—masters of rhetoric and manipulation through speech completing lacking claims or firm footing for their evidence.

Anna J

Dr K definitely meets criteria for a sort of limited galaxy brainedness in the sense that as a psychiatrist he seems to have a lot of opinions about how to treat diseases that fall completely outside of the scope of psychiatry eg lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis. A psychiatrist has 0 business trying to manage any of these conditions, and it's just arrogance/?delusion on his part to think otherwise. Like people spend 6-8+ years after medical school (depends on country) training in gen med and then rheumatology to be able to treat things like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. But he thinks that with his 0 years (apart from a couple of months as a med student) spent in internal medicine he can do better than them? Okay???

Chomagerider

Dude's got a keen sense for marketing. He milks his unique background very well. Just perfect to sell to a US/Western audience that's hungry for exotic sounding stuff from the East. I tip my hat. If I ever move back to my native Germany, I hope my wife (Chinese) can reinvent herself as a FengShui Master to help rich crazy people optimise their energy flows at home in a way that optimizes the energy flows of her bank account...

Daas Nahk

This is one where I know its unlikely but really wanna see him use his right to reply just to hear him try and justify this.

Isaac Rosenberg

Him describing all of the traits attributable to the different doshas has to be one of the most obnoxious segments of DtG I’ve ever heard - and I’ve listened to nearly every episode.

Linda Sears

Elephants with “three big clumpy toes.” 😂

Dermot Power

Vata! Vata! Vata! … Vata! Vata! … made me wince every time he said it . Worse than the squawking parakeets that have have joined our London dawn chorus of late

Reinert

It's always interesting to consider the reactions of a guru's audience to their decoding, in this case /r/HealthyGamerGG. While there's a decent amount of criticism towards Ayurveda there with people mainly tuning in for Dr. K's mental health advice, there's also an interesting phenomenon where his more questionable takes are being filtered through a lens of "helpful analogies" rather than actual beliefs he might hold. This leads to a motte and bailey like "He doesn't actually believe in all that metaphysical dosha stuff, he's just saying doctors should be a bit more caring at a personal level and not treat them as a disease to be cured! Also he's trained as a monk so he's using terms he's familiar with!" It's similar to how JBP fans will defend his use of the Bible or the enforced monogamy quote because they simply can't believe that someone who is otherwise so reasonable could literally believe such a thing, there must be a 4D chess move going on conceptually.

Daniel Richards

One thing I find weird is the linking between doshas and body types. It seems strange to position something both psychologically and physical indicators like 'heavy set' or whatever. It feels like that's restrictive, someone who's heavy set may think they're one dosha but not the one they 'actually are'?

aneladgam_varelse

A small thing i unironically like about whole deranged concept of doshas: it provides different framework for adhd-like tendencies. It’s not learning disability which has to be medicalised, it’s op vata mind! In all seriousness, medical framework provides not exciting and rather grim perspective how life with adhd will be, while vata mind label redirects to opportunities and strong suits

Matt Dear

I'm reading a biography on Paracelsus at the moment. It's very interesting, and honestly it's absolutely wild how many of his ideas are borrowed by every flavour of CAM. Ironically, Paracelsus was incredibly critical of reliance on 'old' ideas, and a dogmatic attitude to new evidence. Of course, while looking for evidence of efficacy, he also just made wild connections based on his own bias and musings. Those more philosophical interpretations are usually what's attractive to the CAM crowd.

Amy S

How did this guy end up at Harvard? That’s the fact I find to be the most puzzling and frightening.
