Matt and Chris dip their toes into the fetid, guru-infested swamp surrounding the 2024 U.S. election. Straining to see what lurks in the murky depths, they encounter dark shapes, including Eric Weinstein pledging his services to whoever wins (or will give him a call), Joe Rogan conspiracy hypothesizing with Donald Trump, the Free Press hosting a truly heterodox election party, Michael Moynihan pulling no punches, and finally, Jordan Peterson’s shockingly sycophantic psychological assessment of Donald Trump and his cohort.

Join Chris and Matt as they navigate the election discourse swamp and the ever-unsettling convergence of internet personalities and political power, examining how these online figures function like the courtiers of old—gathering around their would-be kings, flattering them with pseudo-profound or sycophantic praise, and vying to secure their place in the new order.

All very cheerful stuff, we’re sure you’ll agree!

Good lord JP! What the hell are you on about RE the Trumps?! Couldn’t be wronger 😂😂😂

A distant mirror is easily one of my favourite books. It gives me hope when Tuchman points out that enough sane people survived the calamitous 14th century that these survivors rejects old dogmas and were able to birth the era of the renaissance and the empirical school of thought off the ashes of the worst century for humanity in history…

Jill stein’s interview with Mehdi Hasan was a train wreck

The heterdox can critique Trump, weakly. And ham up the critiques of democrats. But who they can absolutely not critique, is Joe Rogan.

Emma

Again preaching to the choir. But the hypocrisy of the health rant is unbearably!!! To me Trump himself is a living breathing illustration of how much wealth supersedes lifestyle factors when it comes to health. I belong to an international online support group for my rare disease. And last year I had a surgery which I paid $600 for but I believe the full price was $17,000. I just saw a poor American lady who pays hundreds of dollars a month for private health insurance but they are refusing to pay for her surgery and the surgeon has quoted her $100,000 for the exact same brain surgery I got for $17,000 in Australia. And my surgeon was one of the best in the world for this type of surgery. I have so much sympathy for sick Americans!

SHOUNAK SARKAR

Lol I will never get tired of the Eric Weinstein dunking. Man's a special case! So hilarious to hear Cernovich go after him for his galaxy brained nonsense, even though Cernovich himself is a revolting, repulsive and racist individual.

Kyle Dun

Sam Harris is the sole person holding the line in that space. He is on an island all by himself. I have often wondered if his ability to stay out of the gravitational pull of the right is because he has been independently successful with his platform. He never needed to trade on other people's audiences or have ad revenue etc.

Great discussion on the subject of "centrism" guys, the term honestly has become a joke! I mean there are real centrists out there but often the people self-describing themselves as "centrists", invariably turn out to be red pilled, right-wing morons. Or people of the Michael Moynihan variety who put on this "I'm reasonable" shtick but make it clear through their coverage of topics, weighting of criticisms and application of silence, where their biases and partisanship lies. It's just right wing hackery masquerading as centrism. I guess if you are wanting to listening to real centrist voices, there are some interesting examples in the Never Trump / independent world. I highly recommend voices like Professor Tom Nichols, Jonathan V Last and Sarah Longwell of the Bulwark, Anne Applebaum, Noah Smith, Matt Yglesias or Joshua Reed Eakle from Project Liberal. These are some actual "centrist" voices I can think off from the top of my head.

SHOUNAK SARKAR

Lastly, Chris you will probably disagree with this but given the fact that Sam Harris said on Free Press that these days he will vote for Romney over Kamala; can we please stop referring to Sam Harris as a "liberal" or "centrist" going forward? IMO, best way to categorise him is as a Never Trump, secular, heterodox, neoconservative who holds pretty reactionary, hard-right wing views on many topics like Israel-Palestine, immigration, wokeness and other social issues. Harris has also mentioned in the past that he is pretty close to Douglas Murray politically. And yet we persist in the fantasy of calling him a liberal or center-left or something. All that said, I do acknowledge and hear you and Matt that Sam Harris arguing in favour of Kamala in that reactionary space is a net positive, at least for the purposes of this USA election where so much is at stake.

Jordan Peterson, my God. Incredible. I am nearly speechless at the sheer derangement of him at this point, i mean even for him. A just breathtaking display of unhinged bootlicking sycophancy. It’s like he’s wearing opposite-world goggles. Thank you for your service in listening to the whole mind boggling thing and providing this take down. .

Purple_polish

Man that Jordan Peterson segment was hard to get through. Talk about peak cringe. Also just letting his misogyny shine through when talking about the Trump family: no mention of Ivanka, who has quite a public profile, and only mentioning Melania, who was a good little woman who knew her place, unlike that witch Hilary Clinton.

So is RFK JR going to get rid of High Fructose Corn Syrup?

20 minutes in, Fluff! and it’s not the senior guru: ‘Would have went’. WTF! Unsubscribed! Love, Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.

CrystalJade

Interesting discussion! The ethics of psychoanalysis. JBP might benefit from reading. Without disavowing these, and only going by their empty speech and public negation styles, my guess is that Trump is likely a pervert (disavowal of prohibition/the law), Peterson an obsessional neurotic (he likely knows what he’s doing but represses) and Musk maybe either a psychotic or a pervert, probably leaning towards the former. It’s just a view about negation style in the face of prohibition/transgression choices. Those are just my guesses from a Freudian/Lacanian standpoint. Here’s to hoping that the real returns to them all on election day!

Eric retreats into his cloud of ink. 🦑

I hate Joe rogans line that it's Taboo to talk election fraud. Like it's always been conspiracy theory zone. Moron

Jenny

OK I couldn’t wait after all so I’m listening. Pausing after the Joe Rogan segment. Good God that guy is a gullible, lazy thinker! The JFK Jr health back and forth was laughable. First off, if you look at state level health outcomes you’ll see that the least healthy states are MAGA. They have higher obesity rates but that’s not the main reason. There is a lot of economic disparity and health deserts with lots of folks living far away from health clinics and pharmacies. Also Republican governors tended to refuse the federal Medicaid expansion under Obamacare. Moreover, one of the healthiest lifestyle choices one can make is reducing red meat consumption and introducing more fruit and veg, but Trump goes on and on about beef and burgers, and the heterodox nutcases flog the “lion diet” eating themselves into cancer. They are ridiculous. And Rogan is so throughly convinced he’s a deep thinker. Not to mention, as you say, they totally elided the fact that Clinton conceded the election - on election night!

Jenny

Megyn Kelly getting her little dig in, discovering things are true like “lab leak vs pangolin” - with zero pushback 🤬🤬😱

kurdelis

As I listen to the excerpts of Petersons rambling I have to wonder - does he writes this all himself? Or could it be that this was written by one of his interns - you know the fanboys who have taken the next step from just having dialogus before and now have become a part of this great platform.

kurdelis

Or could that be the work of Chat GPT? I wonder if JBP came up by the comparisons to Avengers and what not by him self. You know - DC, the comics, not the state

Erland Hvittfeldt

Important note: polio vaccine can cause polio and is believed to have done so in Gaza. Even a blind hen etc.

Amy

I’m halfway through but you guys need to talk more about Ana Kasparian! I remember people were predicting her grift a while ago when she went on an anti-trans pivot. It’s always the same story with TYT.

Nancy Hale

Matt’s comparison to scheming, toadying courtiers of old is so spot on. It’s a character that’s been with us forever, but man, rarely so nakedly blatant as these “truth-telling free thinkers.”

Edouard De Prez

Can someone point me to the ABC documentary about trump that Matt was talking about?

Jacob_3BP

Happy birthday Chris!! Many thanks for all the work.

Sarah S

Listening to this right after Rogan endorsed Trump.

Will Oswald

"Fuck off Jordan", "Fuck off". Appropriate response after that revolting display. And happy birthday Chris!

Ryan Booker

In news that surprises no one, Joe has officially endorsed Trump.

Tom Yasko

Listening to this- believe it or not- as a distraction from whatever the heck is going to happen here in the US over the next 24 hours to (insert timeframe of your choice). Currently on the segment where Jordan Peterson gives an Academy Award performance of sycophancy. (Wow.. just wow. Does this guy live on the same planet I'm on?) Excellent episode, thank you. I'm still stressed, but the distraction with something even more bizarre than the reality I'm experiencing is, somehow, a relief. (Kinda like hitting a toe with a hammer as you're getting your appendix removed.)

Brian Gough

Feels like the shape shifting gurus are finally revealing themselves. Superb episode.

Lys

Not one reference to social determinants of health. Such a privileged hyperindividulised approach to health coming from people who don't have a clue about public health. Ugh.😮‍💨 "Most Americans fall short of meeting the Dietary Guidelines recommendations. Over 50% of Americans consume at or above the recommended amount of grains and proteins but don’t meet the recommendations for each subgroup within the grain and protein food groups. The NHANES survey also indicated that over 80% of Americans have diets too low in vegetables, fruit, and dairy. A 2019 CDC report stated that 12.3% of American adults met the suggested fruit intake, and 10% met vegetable consumption goals." I think "chemicals" are the least of their worries when it comes to food. They got angry at Michelle Obama for trying to get kids eating fruit and veg in school.

Alex H

It's good calling Rogan an antivaxxer, a conspiracy theorist, a partisan etc. He knows the stigma of the label is effective and hates it!

Tim Tripp

I appreciate/hate that you have us listen to these clowns with you. The two solitudes. We will muddle through no matter what happens.

Jess B.

It's been a wild ride listening to Decoding the Gurus from the start while watching two friends fall down this guru rabbit hole. Their transformation concluded a couple of weeks ago when they started spouting anti-vax rhetoric (saying my friend has colon cancer because of the COVID vaccine) and then admitted that Trump was their candidate, all while being the biggest Elon fanboys. It shouldn't have been a surprise, considering how many episodes of DtG pointed to that progression. But damn, listening to Peterson go on and on about Trump and Elon is almost too hard to listen to now, even for fun. It just makes me angry.

Roland Weber

With a heavy heart, I decided to skip this one. I got an election overload lately. Even dropped out of the DtG chat because of the overwhelming bursts of activity there. Wondering whether that will subside a couple of weeks after the inauguration day riots... 😈

deanofcaffeine

Surely JPB's garbage speech was AI-generated, optimized for maximum sycophancy. Either that or it was generated to reflect reality, then the antonym was swapped in for every adjective about Trump.

Michal Lichota

Eric and Lex should make a show together, it would be a centrist extravaganza

Randy

I chipped in for your birthday present, Chris. I really, really hope you get it.

Chris Wishy

Seems like Dana White joined the X-men. Was so cool to hear Joe Rogan mentioned in the presidential victory speech ✊ I wonder if he’ll get a government portfolio alongside Musk and Kennedy….

Eleanor curry

Matt: 'Human centipede of sycophancy' 🤣🤣 👌👌

peta austen

that last 50 minutes made me want to stab myself in my ears

Matt Dear

Rogan is a complete fucking moron, leading a plethora of bigger morons to a croc-infested waterhole. Trump himself, a bloated, senile Hippo, spraying shit everywhere.

thefriz

Will listening to this after the outcome we had made me more depressed? If the idea of Trump winning is taken seriously I'll listen because that's the reality, but hearing too much hope about him not winning will feel like ... bad.

James Lucas

I genuinely have to akjp the JBP parts of these now because the degree of cringe induces physical suffering. Bret and Eric is comedic but Jordan is just too far.

collapsing

Increasingly thinking that politics and culture are now inextricable. Chris ( and Matt) try to say that’s not what this is about. But Rogan has come out of the closet and endorsed Trump. As have all the other Gurus. As has DTG. But still trying to be scientific. One of the reasons I enjoy this is hearing non- American voices on podcasts currently dominated by a ludicrous country with a dark heart. Russia and China are clearly worse but speaking English has given US a pass. Behaviour in Israel has been disgraceful. Hope we can move on from a US centric viewpoint now. Let’s look at Europe, Japan and Australia for a while and twitter is no more.

Jimmy Everyman

That Peterson part sounded like a parody. Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Frances Sebesta

Just listened to Matt’s caution about going through customs and immigration at the US border. I’m still scarred by my last experience five years ago and that was just to visit in-laws on my way back to Australia. We now use zoom to keep in touch. I’ll never visit the US again even though NY is just the best city in the world.

Violet

JP has no soul. Rogan has no integrity. I do not know how you endure these maggots so regularly and do not lose your minds.
