In this special episode, Matt and Chris revisit the wisdom of the internet’s favourite philosopher-warrior/political theorist, Lex Fridman, as he dives once again into the complex realities of the Ukraine war. Joining Lex is IDW hero and conservative commentator Douglas Murray, who actually offers some sensible insights on the specific topic of Ukraine. Fear not, though, Lex ensures his signature 'non-partisan' approach remains intact, framing Zelensky as a potentially corrupt leader who is emotionally driven, and responsible for prolonging the conflict to evade the inevitable investigations. Meanwhile, Putin remains a tragically misunderstood patriot whose greatest crime is that he loves his country a little too much. Lex is in rare form, reaching new heights of weaponised naiveté, and bravely defending himself against the legions of online "grifters, drama-farmers, liars, bots, sycophants, and sociopaths." Expect generous servings of geopolitical delusions, questionable polemics, and heartfelt serenades to Joe Rogan—all delivered with Lex’s characteristic humility and wisdom as a love-filled Man of Peace. We are truly sorry to drag you back into Lex's world, but someone has to keep an eye on his Ukraine takes.

I know I'm pointing out the obvious but it is just so spectacular - Lex's wish to get Zelensky, Trump and Putin in a room together - that the solution to world peace is essentially a podcast. Podcasts can save the world. One teenager's guitar solo at a time.

Lance

I'd forgotten how horrible that serenade was. I even thought, "I hope Matt and Chris play the song." No. I think that if Ukraine blasted this song at the Russians, they'd be committing war crimes.

Mike

Fraudman is either extremely naive and stupid or an extremely cynical grifter who's pretending to be stupid. I tend to believe the second one.

brianshmrian

I was chopping vegetables the other day when I accidentally cut myself, but instead of blood all I saw were wires and circuits and sparks, and I thought, "Oh my god! I'm a bot! Lex Fridman was right!"

Randy

Hearing that Lex song explains so much.

Daniel VI

That song clarifies things for me. Lex is the David Brent of heterodox podcasters.

brownie

Good God, Lex- nothing misses your eye..I also liked Murray for a hot minute

jss

Lex ignorance of mrg’s bf shows he doesn’t‘listen to both sides’

CHUSSTERR

I feel like Lex has a ton of browser tabs up that are "5 things women want" style articles.

Cole

Wow this lex fridman song is a really special moment

Linda Sears

I wonder what it would take for Lex to see that Putin is a cruel, power hungry dictator. Also, was Chris really wearing a suit or was he just making fun?

Joanna Mulvaney

flipping hell there were some laugh out loud moments in this. Probably the only time in my life where i’ve sympathised with Douglas Murray, i too have been stuck in a conversation at work with a 21 year old who needs to give himself a jolly good shake, trying very hard not to laugh in his face and call him a fucking idiot.

Stardustsparkle

I’m convinced Lex’s brain stopped developing before preschool. He is so insufferable.

Stardustsparkle

The song wtf 🤮🤮🤮 struggling not to throw up my breakfast 😭 whyyyy

Saladus

Singing about how Jorgan has such an impressive bodily stature when, while muscular, he's only like 4 feet tall is quite a swing. Weirdly though I found the song kind of endearing. I usually hate impromptu musical numbers like that, but maybe it's that it was just the right amount of cringe for Lex. He should stick with that rather than trying to be a heavy player in geopolitics and overall malcontentious prick.

Emma

I made the mistake of listening to this last night while falling asleep. And now all morning I've been pottering around with 'joe rogan, Joe rogan, he's got shoulders for days....' going round and round in my head on loop. Just have to hope to God I don't accidentally start singing out loud and my colleagues think I've gone mad!

Kyle Dun

The thing is, Lex knows what side his bread is buttered, and it's the MAGA side.

Cee

Ok, I'm only just over 20 mins in and I've already rolled my eyes so many times I'm worried that if I keep listening my eyeballs might just roll out of my head.

Cee

Also, Lex's understanding of friendship is so, so deeply weird - does he really think Modi is actually friends with Putin, Zelensky, Biden etc?!?

Kyle Dun

Matt, on point about DM being our guy, but still annoyingly playing by podcast rules of civility. It's also the topic. If Lex had an anti-Israel lens, he wouldn't be anywhere near as polite.

Kyle Dun

Ok, just got to the song. What the actual fuck. I thought the PBD gift giving was the peak of ass licking. Christ.

Meg

Whenever I listen to Lex there is always a moment I think I am listening to an AI and have to remind myself this is a real person spouting this nonsense. Or at least I think he is, maybe he is a LLM trained on Joe Rogan and platitudes about love.

Nat J

Oh no, Matt! Go and edit out your Animal Farm mistake, and we’ll all pretend we never heard it. (They switch to “Two legs better” at the end when the revolutionary leaders become the new/old autocrats)

Ben Godek

Lex and Red Scare are the gurus whose popularity makes the least sense to me. They’re not even good at rhetoric, so their lack of substance should be all the more apparent.

Tobbe lobben

Is lex using drugs or why is he slurring his words so much?

Eric Ireland

Just got about half an hour into it, listening to Lex ask Modi softball questions and then Modi tells him what a brilliant journalist he is,.. it's all so phoney and saccharine, and above all he's just *SO DUMB* I can't get over that people listen to him and he's a talking to world leaders. It's like listening to a not too bright high school student doing interviews for a school project. How on Earth did he ever get into this? Why is he popular? The mind boggles...

Tim Tripp

Lex is so annoying. Trump is a super narcissist eclipsing Biden's narcissism. He over complicates Russia's invasion of Ukraine to justify his desire to let Russia off the hook. It is simple, invading your neighbour is not good.

Mike Nelson

Every time I hear Lex, I wonder how Billy Madison jumped from the screen and attained sentience as a real boy: "What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Ryan Goss

You need to put a content warning before playing that clip of Lex singing to Joe lmao

Matt Dear

Two fucking wankers. Kind of impressive for Lex to appear more of an extremist than arch-polemicist Murray, bravo.

Cate Kneale

Douglas Murray deserves this. My one regret is that Lex didn't write a song about him and make him listen to it.

Linda Sears

From all the anti-Lex comments here, I’m assuming the Ukrainian bots are hard at work.

CHUSSTERR

It's so funny when they rip on lex I can't get enough

Mindbender

Lex is so disingenuous it’s nauseating.

Jill

Want to know what Lex means by “deep” ?? “Deep understanding?” I wish he would qualify that … He uses such psychobabble lord knows why they let him interview them ..

HustleTron9000

I hate Lex more than a Ukrainian bot farm does.

Curtis Kofoed

Lex is actually really useful. You can immediately clock anyone who thinks he's worth listening to as a moron.

HustleTron9000

Also, I've heard you both use factoid to describe a "small or simple fact". In this podcast you used it at 39m. A factoid is "an item of unreliable information that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact".

Dean

The song! The fucking song! Fuck you Chris! Fuck you Lex! FUCK ME!

Requires-Coffee-247

Lex passive-aggressively called out Sam Harris on twitter today, too. What he said about him was "LAUGHABLE" but he thinks Sam is smart and learns things from him. Which is it, Lex?

Dr Marti McAuley

The song 😭 reminds me of Rusty in Just Friends ‘when Jamie smiles…’ - I bet he sings this to all his ‘marks’ 🤣

Sue Fricke

This just made me hate Lex even more. He is an idiot and even DM was clearly only just tolerating the nonsense Lex was spouting. I need a soul cleanse after that episode.

Jack AG

Nice job breaking down Fridman's faux nonpartisanship. It's so infuriating listening to him blame Zelenskyy for everything then act like some neutral party.

Liz Tily

Thanks for the heads up about the song. I was able to stop my audio before it started. If these warning comments saved one person…it was me! Also these 2 should read sleep stories for the Calm app. Or not smoke opium before podcasting. I actually glanced to make sure my audio speed wasn’t under 1.

WB

Feeding the Eagle what....? Gag me with a 15ft stick. I'd rather be stuck in a room with Jordan Peterson for a day than spend a second in a room with Lex. blech

Recalcitrant Goat

Peel my skin off bit by bit please but never ever ever ever make me listen to that song again. ‘I thought listening to this would upset me and I was right’ 👍

Sarah S

Is Lex always really high? Or on Xanax or something?
