I predict the average DtG score will be 3 and that I will score 9 or 10

3. Am I the only normal person here?

look... my gf loves my porrige so get off my back

Polymathery needs to have Yudkowski. He wrote a book-length series of blog posts on quantum mechanics, another on social psychology. He wrote a book that covered things like specialty infant formula. Definitely belongs.

David Love

This is more of a Reaganite conservative or libertarian quiz. I think the big neoliberals like Noah Smith or Matt Yglesias would score around a 5 or 6.

Shug

2. Would a Marxist necessarily score zero? Chris said that at one point and I'm not a Marxist fwiw

Sonje Finnestad

I scored 0 or 1 - there was one question I just couldn't answer.

Brice F

Was a solid 3 with some reservations about like 4 other points, so I just kinda weighted them as .25 points each and I’m a 4. Keynesian-lite

Jon Hand

I’m an OGDtG shill 😁

Claudia

This really depends on where you are, though. For example. Around here incomes are incredibly highly taxed, while capital gains, inheritance, properties, etc. are low or not at all. So I gave myself the occasional .5 and ended up around 2.

Ymirsdreams

"There are no right or wrong answers" "YES" "we haven't started yet" "NO"

Ymirsdreams

This quiz does a good job of highlighting how politicians use abnormal external events (wars, Covid, etc -- 'natural shocks') to justify their policies during average times. (One of the few actually good points in the Shock Doctrine.)

Ryan Booker

2. Maybe 3. I thought the inflation question was dumb and said no. Because it should be doing all of the above.

Alex H

Look at my shadowy, globalist cabal, dawg. We losing. Time to call in a favour with the WTO!

Daniel VI

I scored 2, which I am a little surprised by, as I thought that I’d be higher.

Andrew Condon

Urgh, i hate to be the one making a negative comment - and i enjoyed the rest of the episode a lot, the book structure discussion etc. But this quiz is embarrassing in exactly the way that the galaxy-brain gurus talking about stats is. I know it's light-hearted, but i mean, come on! (unless it's entirely a parody and i'm just outing myself as a humourless scold)

CrystalJade

Forced choices suck! I think the tax question is such a false choice. I support optimal tax rates. Ones that likely look very different to today. Increasingly progressive. I chose yes though as they should be as low as possible given the distribution of income and wealth. That was the only difference between my score and yours!

Daniel VI

Excited to hear about the book! A thought on Jordan Peterson - given his verbosity, the central importance of his ability to dazzle his audience / followers with his rhetoric, and his scope / impact - Peterson is, for me, the example of pseudoprofound BS.

Liz Tily

I’m at work right now and tried to share the quiz with the people in the operating room with me. Not one person could get past the yes or no format to even answer the first question. I scored a 2 on the quiz.

Molly Bretthauer

Can you now do a question to break down results by location?

David Noble

I feel like the results of this will be influenced by the responses given by Chris and Matt.

Linda Sears

I was a 2. The only one I disagreed with Matt and Chris on was the freedom of capital investment. If it weren’t for people abusing it, I’d have said yes.

commutercomputer

I scored 3 does this mean that I'm social democratic mega bureaucrat?

Joey D

Hey Chris and Mat! Sorry if it’s annoying to have people shout ideas at you but how about a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Gurus-style listing in the book or as a companion piece? Something concise and satirical that I can pull out when trying to explain to friends why I don’t want to engage with a particular guru’s content. A Decoders’ Guide to the Gurus!

Kerena

My fellow Ones, how are you all handling the momentous duty of marching in the revolutionary vanguard?

Nancy Hale

3.5. If I took this survey 20 years ago I probably would’ve scored closer to the 6 or 7 range.

Alex H

There are so few other 9s out there that the 9 vote is now rounded down to 0% 😤

jubshit

Fun quiz. I scored 2. Question 10: minimizing restrictions on flow of money isn't my bag. There shouldn't be an effort on making sure: oligarchs pay incredibly generous prices for real estate as bribes; rare earth separation facilities that can dump toxic slip into local waters; conglomerate ventures can offset their environmental impact by paying corrupt functions of government and privatized gov't land to "credit" their carbon impact. Shit, I may just be an environmental fascist. Hahahaha!

Of the EU's four freedoms, the only one that isn't included is the freedom of movement for people (the other 3 being freedom of movements for goods, services and capital). This may seem like a side issue from the pov of categorising neoliberal outlooks, but it came up a lot in the internecine warfare amongst the British and Irish radical left around Brexit. The pro-Brexit left (the so-called "lexit" proponents) argued that the EU's four freedoms were a neoliberal conspiracy, focusing on the movement of people (those Polish plumbers!). Now the Stalinists have always been disgraceful on pandering to anti-immigrant sentiment (while insisting its not racist to be anti-immigrant, it's just defending wages and conditions for British workers - the same argument the NF & BNP make). But a sizeable chunk of the lexiteers were Trots (the irony of self-identified Trots defending "socialism in one country" arguments was entirely lost on them). The same crowd defend policies like Green Keynesianism, etc and were dismayed by the breaking on the wheel of Syriza and Greece by Frankfurt orthodoxy in 2015. The arguments of anti-Brexit radical leftists such as myself that if the lexiteers were serious about Keynesianism it is the free movement of capital that matters far more than the movement of people fell on deaf ears. In the end, ofc, the numerical insignificance of the radical left in a referendum context, meant the argument was an irrelevance in the scheme of things (despite lexiteer main character syndrome delusions otherwise). Although that never stops us using the excuse for a good feud. But the lack of education on the dynamics of international macroeconomics necessary to understand the stakes of the differences between Keynesianism, neoliberalism and Trump's current actions, are not exclusive to the UK radical left, from what I can see from the general discourse. It would be great if they taught this stuff in school, but I can totally see why they don't want to.

thefigmaster

6 - based it on current UK but tbh I was basically flipping a coin on half of them.

Salex

Oh Mrs Thatcher’s ghost scares me so! Also, I’ve decided to be a contrary wanker and abstain…

Paula Breighton

Mark Blyth (the Shrek of economics) has a book coming out on inflation (users and losers); Yanis Varoufakis talks about our current era of Technofeudalism; and, Richard Wolff lectures on Marxist theory (he was supposed to debate Jordan Peterson years ago but JP backed out), Socialisms, and capitalism. All provide food for thought.

Matt Dear

I got all the same answers as you both. You have indoctrinated me.

Paul Sees

Listening to book stuff rn... Is super painful that you don't seem to have the gurometer scores in front of you. Like, surely the starting point is the group leader for each criterion as scored through the official process?! This cavalier attitude and seat-of-pants pontificating is an insult to the scientific rigour and empirical genius of the meter itself.

livintheilife

Eerie… I got exactly the same answers.
