Did you use the worst photo of Eric you could find?

A video! I’m not sure I’m ready! :)

I got low key respect for Piers Morgan. Is he contributing to the enlightenment of the general discourse? No... Fuck no. But is he a cynical hack of the lowest order, slithering though the muck like he's born to it? Well, many have tried to sieze that crown and Piers has seen off the pretenders and remains King. I dont think he pretends to be anything else.

We all know Eric is a charlatan. The more interesting question IMO is to understand the psychology behind it. Why is he this way? How did he get this way? What sort of environment creates this psychology? I get the sense that he (and his brother) were subject to some form of childhood abuse by their parents, who put unrealistic pressure on them to succeed, or otherwise damaged their emotional development. They both exhibit many of the same traits, which suggests some component of it was a result of their upbringing. I think Eric actually genuinely believes the things he says, and is actually blind to the part of his ego that is seeking the fame, attention, and approval that it is obviously seeking, which results in the abnormal psychology we all witness. But there is some sort of self-protection mechanism at play that makes one part of his psyche unable to see its own blind spots. It's fascinating to watch, as he's obviously intelligent in some ways. However he isn't able to see this massive aspect of his own behavior (including the mountain of self-contradictions) that everyone else on the internet can see.

Great fun to watch your faces in response to Eric! We all need a cocktail after that one, sheesh. Carroll was a great model for how to respond to someone like this, and we all will run into the Erics of the world so very useful. Such a great reminder to stand your ground and not take the bait!

I was hoping that someone would comment on Sean’s unfortunate mistake, saying “heterodox” instead of “orthodox”. Not a big deal, it was clear from the context what he meant, but given the importance of this concept to his central point it’s weird that no one has mentioned it.

Eric could easily style his hair into a judge's wig

How much does the chip on Etic’s shoulder weigh? That’s what happened to Sisyphus’ ‘ boulder! Jessus he is such a whiney bitch

I’ve watched this a few times now. I can see why Sean Carroll doesn’t think it’s worth his time doing it again. Sharing a platform with a bullshitter and an idiot must be so draining.

The other thing I will say about this episode is that I still hold out some small hope for Curt Jaimungal. I think he’s a smart, earnest young guy who’s gotten badly mixed up. Some of his early episodes were excellent. I kinda hope he exercises his right to reply and comes on the show.

One last question. What is the object in the lower left hand corner of Matt’s screen? My marriage is hanging in the balance.

Ok, Sorry to be such a pest about this heterodox/orthodox issue, but since there was still some uncertainty about it, I went ahead and asked Sean (I have his email because I was a guest on Mindscape once <- BIG SHOT ALERT). He said "I simply goofed and said "heterodoxy" when I meant "orthodoxy." Nothing deeper than that." DECODING COMPLETE

Good to see Eric wearing his jacket. So if he gets the phone call whilst on air he can just rush off.

Sean Carroll is remarkable in this, both as a scientific communicator and as a debater. I watched the original and then your DtG episode to collect good notes for myself. Also, I find it hilarious that the throughline for Eric and Bret is that they each believe they had their grand idea stolen while in graduate school by a luminary in the field (Witten for Eric, Greider for Bret). Talk about tough luck!

This was such a treat.

Listened to this while getting rid of migraine as it devolved from a 9 to a 2–the sanity and chuckles were a soothing layer, on top of a triptan drug…
