After receiving many requests, we take a look at The Elephant Graveyard's popular satirical critique of Joe Rogan's comedy career and influence. Presented in a style reminiscent of Adam Curtis's documentaries with a sardonic spin, the video critically dissects Rogan's impact on the comedy scene, making some comparisons with cult-like behaviour. We offer our thoughts on the video and discuss the nature of some of the claims made about broader tech elite conspiracies. The summary: Very entertaining, mostly accurate, but don’t take it all at face value.

Thanks is it meant to be unlisted?

I feel like you guys missed the point on this one. The "conspiracy" is essentially that billionaire tech gurus and various government figures are using Joe Rogan and comedy to fufill their aims. Which are to consolidate their power and control. Then you guys listen to this and go, oh no this is too much speculation, he should be like us and just consider it all an organic accident that Joe Rogan has platformed politicians, FBI agents and billionaire techies. Yes, Joe Rogan may not be in on the long term goals, he is (as you guys have already elaborated) just easily manipulated, but it doesn't mean the long term goals don't exist. Was very shocked by your guys take here.

I personally didn't come away from the EG videos with the notion that there was a serious conspiracy theory being posited. I took from it that it was just exaggerating for comedic effect. His tone is ironic throughout. And, as ye pointed out, it's kind of perfect to put Joe at the centre of a conspiracy theory considering Joe is the one who has monetized and popularized conspiratorial thinking in recent times. I took that to be the joke.

Bek

Did you guys watch some of Elephant graveyards earlier videos before this one? Feels like you're misinterpreting the tone a bit and missing a lot of the satire? 🙂

Josh Stuart

I enjoyed it. But it did give me "Zeitgeist" vibes in parts.... And like you said, im not really sure it was 100% irony. That said, anything that makes fun of those losers is good by me.

George

Few comments about not taking EG at face value, just seeing it as satire. Which is fair but it's evident from the comments and awful lot of people aren't doing that: This is one of the top comments: This is not just about comedy. This is essential sociology for the time we live in.

DJM

So the more plausible truth id that’s Joe Rogans rise was fueled by the shadowy interests of the supplement/sex toy industry? Boring!

Gustaf Pihl

Wow… I watched the full video and like 10 of the other videos on the channel after seeing this. This channel is trippy. I don’t just mean kaleidoscopic patterns and pretty colors, but the videos leave you with the same after taste as a genuine psychedelic trip. The only other thing which has done that to me is The Tree of Life.

You guys have talked about the “irony armor” rhetorical technique before, and I think parts of satire like this can fall into the same category. In general, it seems easier for people to give comedic rhetorical techniques more of a pass because they’re fun and you can always fall back to “don’t take it so seriously”

Just going to add my voice to the others expressing that I believe that you might have taken some parts of the video at face value which were not meant to be taken as such. I think EG's style is similar to the Norm MacDonald style (whom I am sure EG would consider "one of the based ones" where he never quite wants you to be sure exactly where he stands, and delights in "fucking with the audience a little". That approach might be used to veil or soften actual intentions, that's true.

Rod Hodges

Excellent subtle critique that my low educated mind probably would have missed. Thanks fellas. To paraphrase song thief Paul Simon, still a listener “after all these years.”

Vegard Hauks

Is all of this content from the supplementary materials, or is it an expanded discussion of the EG video, edited out of the supplementary material?

Frances goulart

I have never been a fan of Grand Theories or laughable Theories of Everything! It's like the Carlin routine about stuff. Where would you put it all? You gents did a great job of separating the conspiratorial wheat from the chaff here. Pick up Occam's razor when you want to shave . It's a better tool than a Chatbot lawnmower!

Judson

Hey guys. I'm a big of both EG and DTG. Any chance you could have the creator of EG on? He has been tracking a similar cast of characters as you and I think many here would love to hear his perspective.

Peen Israel

Did you guys listen to any of the Elephant Graveyeard Radio Hours? Do you also support Randy Rushton’s apprehension by the RCMP?

Shambles

I think your take is completely, absolutely correct in all regards. Precise, concise and , frankly, unassailable. Can I get a shout out now?

Guys. Graveyard rules. There’s hyperbole, weird psychoanalysis, truth…it’s all there.

Christopher Grant

Agree that y’all nailed it. In Elephant Graveyard’s defense, I see his work more squarely in the enlightened entertainment category than the gurus.

Long time listener, first time caller. I think yall treated this way too seriously, even in contrast to your own acknowledgements, and also did a disservice to your audience’s intelligence. This is obviously hyperbolizing the 4-d chess level of intentional planning. I’m confident yall have heard of ‘Project 2025’. Similarly-networked individuals developing and pursuing administrative policy while utilizing mass media strategies to foster uninformed buy-in is hardly conspiracy and much less so conspiratorial ideation. Over-conflating paid subscribers with youtube/reddit commenters is poor form. This admittedly struck a nerve bc I’m very concerned about the movers and shakers of power in the US and wish yall would have had a more nuanced response rather than lecturing about not taking the internet too seriously. Triggers aside, dig the pod
