You thought we got off to a rocky start with Keith Raniere? Wait until you hear the insight of the world's most popular philosopher, Stefan Molyneux.

Molyneux has a storied career that includes establishing an early pseudo-psychology and misogyny-based anti-spanking online cult and traversing the ideological spectrum from anarcho-capitalism to MAGA apologetics and White ethnonationalism.

There is a lot of ground to cover with Stefan but for this episode we do not need to dig back into the annals because Stefan has not really changed. What he was doing a decade ago and how he was interacting with his followers is essentially the same as what he is doing now.

The content we are going to focus on is linked above and is a recent episode he released, recorded on a Twitter Spaces call-in show. It is genuinely one of the best illustrations we have come across of the secular guru playbook.

So if you want to play along in advance and meet the man who may finally dethrone Scott Adams as the worst person we have covered, take a gander at the video linked above. I think im actually going to do the pre-watch for the first time because Chris has made me feel guilty for being lazy in the past.

Andrew

This video is gives Stefan the amount of respect he deserves: https://youtu.be/SUYK8Fgr5HQ?si=l9BtiaWtdB2cB1yi I know two people that got sucked into his cult and "defooed". The whole reason I started listening to DTG was because very early on, maybe 2021 Chris mentioned covering Stefan and I've been waiting ever since.

MoooinkForYourSupper

> the world's most popular philosopher, Stefan Molyneux. 😭😭😭

Colin

Sounds much better than ruminating about work. Or indeed doing work. Stefan's laughing at his own jokes so it's off to a good start.

Caramello

I think that Gad Saad was worse than Scott Adams, but that there is somebody worse than either of them is terrifying.

RareTripleBait

If the worst parts of Dr K and Weinstein^2 formed a joint Gundam: This is Mollies power lever After about 40 or 50 minutes in it gets rough

Sonje Finnestad

He doesn't seem to have *any* degrees in philosophy.

Don Power

A world class turd.

Colin

Yes he could be the most horrible guru on the internet. He might not have a reflection. Keith Raniere might be objectively more horrible, but he isn't really an internet guru per se. That is twisted stuff. I'd never heard of him before 2 hours ago. It's a bit extraordinary he hasn't been sued into oblivion by the parents.

Sonje Finnestad

He seems utterly oblivious to centuries of philosophical discussion of truth and knowledge and justification.

Ymirsdreams

Just on the first question: there are so many shocking revelations from philosophy. It's interesting he interpreted that golden open goal as an excuse to belittle some strawmen.

Sarah Imrisek

Absolutely brain breaking. How do you guys get through these videos? I'm in awe of your mental resilience.

Frances goulart

You can't live in the desert on urine? Have you tried it? Holy shyster balls!!

Linda Sears

“Do I dare disturb the universe?” I will give listening to this the old school kids try. I have a feeling I will fail in my efforts.

Frances goulart

All I'm hearing is YOU WORM, YOU. YOU DO REALIZE HOW MUCH SMARTER I AM THAN YOU?!!

Richard DV

Please explain how anyone got past 0:50 seconds ?

Frances goulart

I couldn't help fantasizing about shoving a bowl of hot oatmeal into his pedantic kisser mid-sentence. Maybe at the sentence about Margaret Atwood would be good!

Nina Davies

He is like a cross between Voldemort and Hannibal Lecter. I managed 12 minutes. Good luck everyone!

Linda Sears

My phone is refusing to play this content. Is it a sign from the universe?

Just gonna chuck my 2 penn'orth into the discussion vat: 1) He talks quite early on about the mainly metaphorical "demons" that are causing wrong thinking ppl to think wrongly. This, he says, encouraged these wrongthinking, possessed fools to de-humanise those who disagree with them. And that's exactly what hes doing to them, in real time, at the same time as telling them off for doing it. I mean, what a prick. 2) one of the early callers on this show, maybe the first, starts bringing up Internal Family Systems and attempting to apply that stuff in a way which boosts and supports Stefan's "takes". I know v little about IFS, had to get a therapist friend to explain what it was. At first appraisal it seems kind of vague, maybe unscientific and malleable to malicious deployment... I welcome thoughts about this, and would like to stress that I haven't done much homework and claim no expertise. Peace out, much love.

Rich F

Aw jesus christ this stuff gets dark v quickly. It's electrically shit.

Rich F

Somebody said it got dark at 50 minutes or so. Im on 20ish minutes and its horrifying. Sleeping soon.

Jack Anderson

His book The Art of the Argument makes it clear that he doesn't understand some basic aspects of logic, which made it frustrating when his philosophy videos used to be among the first that came up when you searched certain topics on YouTube

Linda Sears

The way he “shared” his vulnerability by explaining why he was invested in the topic of truth and then used his sharing to bully the man he was talking to into sharing the emotional reasons for his interest in the topic was very manipulative to me. It’s like he wants to get him into an emotional state so that it is easier to control him.

ChunkyLover7695

I always watch these clips but for some people... Especially a molyneux type... I wonder if there's a way to watch or listen to the clip without contributing to his view count... I'd just rather not contribute to their capacity to capitalise on pretty appalling content... Any of you nerds on here have any ideas? 😜

Richard DV

The ‘I don’t speak German’ Podcast covered him a fair bit in the early days, I seem to remember. Imagine being stuck in a lift with the fucker !!

Noah Heck

Oh my god. I hate this guy so hard!

Noah Heck

So, I am totally stuck on the caller who wants to discuss epistemology. I was originally annoyed at Molyneaux (whose name I hope I misspelled, quite frankly) for being disingenuous. Eventually, he was so clearly being either disingenuous or oblivious that I started to get angry at the caller for continuing to try to speak with someone who is so clearly going to avoid any real discussion.

Pedro

I would bet I hate-listen to roughly as much of this awful horseshit as Chris - I have a strong stomach for it. But good lord, this one almost broke me!

Rich F

Molyneux progress report: Im on about 40mins, and his conversation with the caller has got quite hilariously bogged down in some very swampy semantics about whether truths pre-exist declarations about material reality which are later proved to match. Or they have to be verified in order to be called true. Or something. I feel like someone should have mentioned falsifiable theories or something, yknow, *sciency* by now but tbh its exquisite and I don't want it to stop. Im sure it *will* stop, and that's enough for today. I'll try to pick up my burden and carry it a few more yards tomorrow after work. One has to pace oneself.

Scott Walkers Ghost

Some scattered notes I took while listening. Reminds me of a preacher Claiming to be rational but keeps making massive dumb pessimistic generalisations like demonic possession, his opponents hate him and what him dead. Adds bass the EQ on his microphone to make himself sound more masculine. Claiming to be morally superior He acts out his opponents as feminine and stupid, straight up sexism. The in-group are the ones that get it, share something in common with incells. This Idiot can’t think of the word retaliation. The proportion of time in which he speaks compared to the time the people calling in are talking displays a huge power dynamic. The first caller on men who were pro choice, “their mothers must have scolded them as a child “ He claims women have an enormous amount of power because they are not assigned to men and get to choose what men they date, wtf. Margret athenwood a witch, wtf. Women have killed more people than wars, women have become hysterically left. So much sexism. Intellectually cosplaying, do these people just want the persona of an intellectually? They want status? The second guy seems genuinely curious, stephan deliberately misunderstood him so he could cosplay as a superior intellectual. Puts him down. He declares the caller to have bad intentions, not being gracious. Dr k meta shift “what are you asking?”, then gas’s light him. Accusing him of bad intent and weaponising his insecurities to gas light him into believing he has bad intent because of his relationship with his father. Also demanding the caller to reveal personal info, keeps undercutting him. A last stab at being feminine, feels like torture. Policing his listeners, showing them how to behave, be more grateful and gracious of this dickhead. When gaslighting that man about his father, reminded me of what contrapoints said about incels, they had a pessimistic epistemology, if it feels really dark it is true, like emotional reasoning. When stephan summons up all these dark feelings about this guys dad and uses them to construct a twisted narrative. I can’t listen to any more of this. Looking forward to the decoding episode.

Scott Walkers Ghost

After reading the comments I’m surprised no one mentioned how sexist this is, maybe people didn’t listen to it, totally understandable. This could be the most sexist video I’ve ever listened to.

Jake

"the faith atheists have in the state". There's that sensemaker genius. It's like a fractal of stupidity. The more you think about it, the more wrong things you can find, and there's no limit, you can keep finding more the longer you reflect. All from just a handful of words.

Rich F

Aaaagh. Im on the same bit as yesterday. Somebody who accurately predicts a share price 24hoyrs in advance is never speaking the truth, even if the prediction comes true. And other things in a similar basket. The caller is ultimately a submissive personality type, unaware of what power he holds. The sub tends to run the game in that scene. Im told.

Rich F

Haiku analogy is making my brain sting.

Rich F

Aaaand that's all im doing today. Gonna have a shower.

Sam Morris

I just screamed out in anguish listening to this. My wife thought I’d hurt myself. He may well be one of the worst humans alive.

matthew parsons

Worst piece of content you’ve subjected me to date. To sort of quote Eric - I didn’t like the feeling it gave me. What an awful, manipulative, bully of a man. Not familiar with him at all and was expecting some terrible racist stuff but somehow this was worse. And the accent (wtf is that?) and constant sexual references to the woman etc etc. vomit, head exploding emojis

What's That Noise?

Just to be clear though... with the second caller, what we're witnessing goes beyond bad faith and IS abusive, right?

Rich F

How would someone go about reaching out to the caller who was being castigated at about 1hr 5min? The 2nd guy, right? Surely hes left this wanker behind by now?

Rich F

The hiding and scolding, while deliberately muddying the discussion an a last ditch attempt to maintain his willed superiority, has echoes of several ppl featured in DTG. There's a Raniere-esque vibe to it, but this is 10,000volt arseholery. Its so very bad.

Barn

Cuzn Ed

Okay, wow. Worst. first 30 seconds. ever. 🤢

Carollana Stalder

If Molyneux applies his truth argument then Christianity cannot be proven: it was only stated thousands of years ago.

Damien

'Holy lantern jaysis' as my Dad used to say in his auld Dublin vernacular - this is very tough listening.
