Thought you had enough of Epstein discourse? Just wait till you hear this thrilling analysis. We were planning to cover Blindboy at some point soon, and his Epstein hot takes provide a confluence we cannot resist.

If you do not know Blindboy, he was in a novelty/parody Irish band called the Rubberbandits. The two members wore plastic bags on their heads as part of the band's gimmick. The band is no more, and now Blindboy is a kind of stream-of-consciousness leftist podcast philosopher. Topics that often come up include mental health, colonialism, capitalism, Irish history, and Gaza.

Since he is a leftist, this will likely upset the usual people on the subreddit. C'est la vie!

They were also the hosts of a novelty game show called the almost impossible game show, right? My kids loved it. I remember one task involved blowing out a candle by screaming at the flame. It was actually hilarious.

I was in a BurgerKing in Peckam for a Bar mitzva and at the time I wasn't ticklish due to an excess of giggles at Glastonbury.

What is the world coming to? You can't even shoot someone in the back of the head at point blank range without the "liberal media" branding you a "criminal"! But who's the real criminal, huh? Is it the person who takes a gun and shoots someone in the head until they're dead? Or is it the BUSINESS MAN in his suit and tie?

i listened to this yesterday with my other half (who's a big Blindboy listener). I had opinions. Looking forward to Matt and Chris's take.

Now this will make a good right to reply episode

He goes all round the houses in this monologue. Figure of speech. Everything's linked to everything. Most ppl need to be at least a bit drunk to hit these kind of tangents.

Kimberly Beer

The ASMR sends me over the edge unfortunately, and not in a good way!!

Only listened to the first 10 minutes or so, Blindboy talks about the Military Reaction Force creating violent sectarian conflict by killing civilians from both sides but there is no evidence of them deliberately targeting Protestants. I’m surprised he made this mistake.

Linda Sears

I guess I’d better listen, so I can know what all the Blindboy talk is about. I’m worried it will make as little sense as the Teal and Star Child interview did.

Damien

He's on a 'national treasure' to 'pain in the hole' continuum. Latter camp for me.

Clearly in a minority here, but I quite enjoyed it. Don’t agree many of his takes but do share some of his concerns. Politics aside I find him engaging and thoughtful. I’ve listened to a handful of episodes a couple of years ago. There’s a beautiful one about walking in rain in limerick and the history of money episode with David McWilliams is good. He’s nowhere near as awful as most of the horror shows we have to endure on dtg. Don’t think he’ll overly ding the gurometer. It would be a very interesting right to reply. I see him as more of an artist rather than a straight up political / social commentator.

matthew parsons

Say what you like about his enthusiasm for shooting rich people in the face, he’s a good storyteller.

Eric Ireland

I love it when you upset the usual people on the subreddit.

I quite enjoyed it, but I wouldn't trust the accuracy of anything that he says - he does very much do the thing of making various disclaimers along the lines of "I've not really researched this, and this might sound insane, but... [proceeds to make slightly dubious claim anyway]". But the overall argument he's making in this episode isn't completely insane, even though it's a bit all over the place and he does have a way of making connections between things that I personally wouldn't. I doubt I'm likely to become a regular listener, but I can see the attraction - it's a bit like the experience of being in a pub and having someone with some curious theories talk at you for an hour and a half while your focus on it all comes and goes.

If it did turn out that Donald Trump was a serial killer with the bodies of women buried under his golf course, I wonder how I'd feel about that. I can't help but think part of me would be happy, because it would prove once and for all what I feel instinctively — that Trump is a monster and everyone who likes him is objectively wrong. Which is odd, isn't it? One ought not generally to be happy that loads of people have been murdered, and I do detect a note of hopefulness in Blindboys tone when he lays out that theory too.

I’m both a Blind Boy and DTG fan so it’s a real Worlds Collide moment, lol. I’ll gird my loins and remind myself that, as Juliana Hatfield sang, I Got No Idols.

Shambles

Not the most representative example of his general output to be fair. Anyway, have at it.

Daniel Reed Miller

You may have decoded BB too soon, I see that his latest episode that just dropped is a conversation with Gabor Maté! Two for the price of one at that! Though i know you’ve already done the good addiction doctor.

As someone who has enjoyed many of Blindboy’s episodes in the past, I found myself picking them up for periods and taking a break. For the most part, I think his strategic disclaimers on his takes are reasonable well earned when it comes to mythology, general principles of mental health, and ancient history. As they stray further into the territory of social and political analysis I tend to get a bit more exasperated. Certainly a better media figure and influence than the majority of DTG subjects, and not a real ‘guru’! But will be interesting to hear some critiques.
