The hour grows late, and Matt the Grey-Haired rides once more from his quiet study, summoned by whispers from the ever-churning gurusphere. And so he goes, to seek counsel with Chris the Grey-Bearded, keeper of receipts, watcher of long-form content, and wielder of the sacred Gurometer. For the gurus stir again… and their nonsense must be decoded.

The Hasan yelling at the Vietnamese woman made me think about the Rogan/Primatologist clip.

3 hours! What in tarnation.

I don’t quite get why it’s so hard to understand people’s anti-AI stances. I understand the positives the technology offers, but I’ve yet to hear compelling reasons as to why those outweigh the negatives, like the massive environmental footprint, and millions of jobs that will be eventually be lost to it. I’m in a design field that is being decimated by AI, and know so many people who are gearing up to losing their jobs to AI. I just don’t get what’s so hard to understand about why people oppose AI. Or why you’re so quick to conclude that those people are just ignorant. I love your show, but this take bugs me.

In the destiny chapter, Chris reminds us that we can condemn both Hasan and destiny. It got me thinking, does Chris condemn both? Or only Hasan. Because he too can condemn both. He says we can say he's whitewashing destiny and I will take advantage of being granted that permission. He is whitewashing destiny. I'm not buying the excuse that destiny uses inflammatory language, then walks it back to reasonable opinions. He talks about being pro genocide. I do condemn both of them

George

Fuck me Hasan sucks

Linda Sears

Yeesh. I hope we don’t hear from Hasan again anytime soon. I so wish that “boring” people with well-considered views were the in thing instead of wheels off people like him. It seems like we would learn at some point that people making such outrageous statements are nature’s way of saying “stay away.” If Trump hasn’t taught us that, I don’t know what will.

The journalist who contacted that weird Peterson female was Scott Carney and the alleged injector of Weird Shit(TM) into Jordan was Adeel Kahn, in Mexico. Allegedly he has caused some other sepsis issues. There's a series of videos on it on Sean's Carney's YouTube channel, this is the first one. Don't know much about him though: https://youtu.be/bpF8t-lQBj8?is=yTH6oSLpZrixVvGy

I think the part of the Alex Jones phenomenon most easy to parody is the commercialization, which from the looks of it is what they're already leaning into.

Pageau on JBP’s health was a flashback for me. A Christian acquaintance of mine developed a serious substance abuse that resisted rehab treatment. According to his family, he came to think — and his pastors probably reinforced it — that God was testing him. If he couldn’t overcome the addiction, it was because his faith in God & Jesus wasn’t strong enough. He didn’t survive. The whole situation was saddening and heartbreaking.

Nina J.

This might be overly charitable, but I wonder if part of the motive for Ezra Klein’s suggestion that the broader American left shouldn’t exclude Hasan is the supposition that Piker is more motivated by money, attention, and proximity to power than actual ideological conviction. If that’s the case (as I suspect it is, at least in part), he’d probably be more than happy to compromise his positions if there was real money and political influence in it for him.

Cameron Buff

Hasan saying "this is a twitter point" when today he has 18+ twitter tabs open daily as his "news" and uses those extremely partisan accounts to support his views when on stream

Relieved to hear we won't be hearing from Hassan again any time soon. I really just find be him terribly boring

Chomagerider

Definitely don't consider myself smart enough to form informed opinions about most complex things on the world, but I totally do NOT get the comparison between iphone marketing, where a company marketed a product and the current AI hype, where random people on LinkedIn and similar places tell you to disrupt yourself before you get disrupted... As for the the general internet, I'm too young to remember. But would love a few examples instead of generic claims that technologies have always been hyped (which I don't doubt for a second but still).

Chomagerider

Honestly, at this point "a brain eating fungus" sounds like the most plausible explanation for the mental disarray that plagues the Peterson family... They're a WILD bunch. We should make a sitcom about them.

EagleHasLanded

Just because it bothers me way more than it should: 6 Apollo Lunar landings, plural. Somehow, that part often gets overlooked.

What's That Noise?

1:19:00 oh so you love America do you? Well why don't you just leave then and go back to Vietnam since you love America so much!

I feel like I am going to get torn apart for this, but IDK. Hassan is an imperfect messenger, sure. The dude streams 8 hours a day 5 days a week for the last 8 years, and you found a handful of bad things he said. He's way too biased towards China, and he yelled mean things about an immigrant. Those ARE bad things. However, you didn't mention the things you agreed with him about, but I would bet there are quite a few things. Real question: Don't we want a progressive bro out there speaking to the Bros Of America, promoting Bernie, AOC, Elizabeth Warren, unions and universal healthcare? Isn't it better than just leaving them to be spoken to by only Joe Rogan, Nick Fuentes, and Andrew Tate and their ilk? Cause I gotta tell you, I don't think Ezra Klein or The Daily are bringing in a lot of young people 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Re hasan, his rage fits go well beyond ppl disagreeing w his wacko politics

Thanks for drawing attention to the utterly ludicrous tankie stance on Russia, and Ukraine. The poor Ukrainians are getting it from the right AND the left.

There are many, many things in this world that sell shitloads of units but that are ultimately pointless, from fidget spinners to £100,000 watches. The ipad is still a totally pointless thing, and will remain so, no matter how many units it sells.

Philip Grant

"Russell Brand, one of the world's sincerest Christians". Seriously, who would genuinely believe this?

Zendegi Leonard

The flag raising in Tiananmen is not a white people thing? Mate....mate....it's one of the things that everyone ends up at (often hungover) on a standard China package tour! It's that sketch from "The Late Show" about the friend that spends a week in the UK and comes back with an accent. What a wanker.

2:31:20 -immediately pauses pod to explore Heidecker as Rogan. Came back to say: I’ll be playing over there for a while . The parody is spot on perfection

Frances goulart

I think I may be more offended by Hasan's limited vocabulary than his views. Is he not capable of getting through a simple sentence without a half dozen swears? God damn!

Amy

I think it was around an hour in during the Hasan segment when he made a comment about public companies trying to make profit for their shareholders and that being a bad thing. This line of argument always makes me cringe because the point of a company being public is that anyone can invest in it and profit off of it.

Dominic Horner

Good to see some solid coverage of the Hasan Piker discourse. I dipped into his content years ago (before DTG) and had the same reaction then as now: that his content is obnoxiously bro and performative, tankie adjacent, and is absolutely zero calorie. The platforming debate feels almost like a distraction. I think the real issue is that he’s not a serious person, and he shouldn’t be treated as one.

Beel

The Chris comparison of Guru one-upmanship to shonen anime is so painfully accurate.

The second Indochina war was first and foremost a civil war, which main victims were Vietnamese people who suffered due to the actions of other Vietnamese people. It had also bullshit meddling from all great powers (Soviet Union, China and USA) and spillovers to other nations in the region mainly Laos and Cambodia. Regardless, did the right side won, every sane person should be able to admit that both sides commited long list awful atrocities. Even if you find some leaders like Ho Chi Minh and Giap fascinating or inspiring. In the shadows of the Utopia podcast host pointed out that it's extremely US centric way to think that every bad thing in the world is due to US or capitalism. It also robs the agency from the peoples of the other countries, because they can also fuck things up by themselves without outside interference.

Monica B.

Omgggg at the Hassan extended family house flipping schemes 😭😭😭 That is infuriating and predatory and sick and anti working class and I hate it

Monica B.

Also Matt’s giggles at the Tucker Carlson intros Russell brand part are the best (but omggg at a Tucker Carlson book imprint for that guy!) Maintenance Phase has a glorious two part Russell brand episode you all might like!

You guys would be great guests for Tim Heidecker’s YouTube show “Office Hours”. Wonder if there are any other fans of that show here? Maybe we can email and help set up a call-in some week.

Not relevant to the content of the show but I thought you’d like to know. You’ve got a fan in Scott Weingart. He is a Emergency medicine/ Intensive care Doctor in the US, and he is an absolute legend in the Critical care education world. He has his own podcast called EMCrit which critically appraises literature and guidelines in his field. Below is a link of him being interviewed where he discusses how to navigate online medical grifters, and he mentions that he loves ‘Decoding the gurus’ and uses the framework of the gurometer. Enjoy! https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/critical-care-scenarios/id1491559787?i=1000757224617

Gosh, you guys sure do find a wealth of nobs. No reaching the bottom of this barrel I'm guessing? ;-)

Consistently loving the supplementary material content - some find very cozy about it. I like to do my bedtime beauty routine to it. It takes like 20 min, so I can really make this post last :)

Couldn't stop laughing imagining JP taking his leatherbound book of Trump's tweets off the shelf for some late night study.

Trees

I just read Ezra Klein's piece on Rogan/Hassan, and I'm not sure y'alls portrayal of his treatment of Hassan is accurate. The only defense of Hassan's character he makes is that he isn't antisemitic. His overarching point is that you only hurt yourself if you don't engage, which I think is accurate. I absolutely think that anyone who's planning to run for president should be able to talk with Hassan and push him on his insane beliefs and bad behavior. If he acts like a baby then that just limits his influence.

Zack

Genuinely feel bad for Jordan Peterson. I have seen what autoimmune disorders + long term high dose benzo use can do together and its horrific.

Tim Tripp

Was Hasan triggered by that Vietnamese woman saying the North Vietnamese regime were/are repressive? It could be that she is using this fact to justify being MAGA, implying the Dems supported the North Vietnamese or that Trump is the great defender of freedom. Neither of which is true. Not that this justifies his disgusting reaction. He is also a total Tankie. I am not a fan.

Tim Tripp

JP should retire. So should Pageau.

Matthew Maier

Hasan doesn’t get social murder right. Engels didn’t define it as what one CEO does.
