Murray Episode Recording Complete! (Patreon)

At last we have finished the Murray episode recording. It is currently an unwieldy 3hrs 15mins! So now begins the fun work of editing down to a more manageable length.

The next guru we are planning to cover Nassim Nicolas Taleb because he is so commonly requested and we want to get out of the culture war space for a bit after Murray and Eric. Any suggestions for content to focus on is greatly appreciated!

Taleb 👌👌👌 one of the gurus I have a problem with. Is a genius but also extremely sure that he is smarter than most across fields he knows little about (GMO’s spring ti mind)

Yeah I (Chris) have a similar sense. He seems to be an example of someone with genuine expertise who is infected by their narcissism to believe that makes them an expert on every topic. I also think he’s addicted to offering contrarian takes.

Just heard the "style over substance" criticism for this episode. Its nonsense. First... Aristotle's rhetorical model includes ethos (speaker's authority), pathos (appeal to emotions) and logos (appeal to logic). Style conveys ethos. It's not just fair game for criticism. Its necessary game. Second... DM constantly claims to know what "the people" want. But he is just an editorialist. He has plenty of opinions and hypothesis, but no evidence or data. He doesn't even really present counter factual to check his options. How on earth does a guy from a razor narrow upper British class world, who doesn't deal in evidence, and routinely attends transatlantic dinner soirees where guests conduct round-table analyses of world problems as the appetizer, know anything at all about what "the people" think, want, need or say?

I admit this is a rather petty point, but you made a lot that DM's upper class British accent makes him sound erudite, to me (as a Brit) he just sounds like a pompous twat. (I promise to try to make any future comments more substantive).

I wonder if instead of calling DM a speaker of rhetoric it might be simpler to call him a sophist? For some reason I can both spell and say that and sophistry easier...
