We are still making edits and adjustments to the episode but it is in its near-final form so we thought you guys might enjoy an advance preview.

We think this one is an important episode so we've toned down our usual shenanigans. Nevertheless, there is a long intro but we thought it was relevant and necessary for the topic at hand.

Sam Harris seems to me to have a paranoid streak that influences many of his opinions. He perceives more than average threat from things like wokeness, immigration, AI, people who disagree with him online, whatever. So it's not surprising to me that the threats of reckless viral experimentation, the Chinese government, and media censorship involved in the lab leak hypothesis would lead to it holding more sway with him. Haven't finished listening but thought it was great how you guys contrasted Harris's statement about leaning on experts and getting second opinions with his to-date one-sided Covid origins coverage. Possibly though he feels like he's already had experts on both sides in Ridley and Chan because they claim to have been neutral on the origins question and don't make absolute claims about which hypothesis is correct.

This is the podcast I’ve been waiting for on this subject! Why other educated public intellectuals/podcasters in the IDW space refuse to engage with real experts about this topic I don’t know. I guess conspiracies are just better for ratings. Thank you Matt & Chris for a straightforward discussion that was clear enough for the layperson and us non-scientific types to understand.

I have to say. This was very very good. Sad to see some of the Twitter comments still not getting it that they aren’t saying there is zero chance it’s a lab leak and saying the same conspiracies about these individuals being paid to cover up. But you did really well nonetheless and hopefully helped some people!

He’s now also very open to Lab leak. But mainly blaming US for gain of function. He’s basically Eric Weinstein and Russell Brand with self depreciation.

Excellent episode. Especially in light of the infuriating Bret Weinsteins of the world who are crowing about how they’ve been right every time and now they are vindicated because the FBI is leaning towards lab leak theory They usually hate the FBI. ALL other intelligence agencies are still on the fence but one agency says it’s plausible and everyone is saying “see,we were right all along” Ugh,it drives me nuts.

So grateful for this episode! I appreciate the care with which you chose people who were right in the bullseye of understanding the issue, and how thoughtful and thorough this conversation was. I feel at least educated enough now to say I've heard real experts speak on the subject and that they believe there is strong evidence that the virus originated in nature. Well done, gents! Your guests need to stop thinking like Kumbaya scientists who publish everything openly and start thinking like a nationalistic general who is leading military technology development. I did my PhD research in inhaled aerosols and collaborated with research at the US Nbacc (National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center). We would always roll our eyes at the Bio-“Defense” part 🙄

I love you guys, but I think your guests are seriously misguided on this topic. If somehow in the future you change your opinion on the lab leak, you should do an episode decoding your own episode and all the rhetorical techniques and tricks that led you to be so wrong

At least in the USA we keep our bio weapon viruses in the middle of nowhere in Dugway, UT. Not in a city with millions of people
