Japan’s ¥1,000 “Sayonara” Departure Tax for Tourists Explained

Thanks for visiting Japan, Sayonara and oh, one more thing. Pay this TAX, please! This new flight and cruise ship tax started on January 7, 2019 and will cost you ¥1,000 ($9.25) — but why? For what? Who is effected? The Japanese “International Departure Tax” is here and I’ll explain it. There’s a useful PDF in English here: https://www.nta.go.jp/english/taxes/indirect/pdf/leaflet1.pdf many call this the “Sayonara Tax” and with 31M tourists coming to Japan in 2018, it means A LOT OF money! What do you think? #japan #airport #tax #sayonara

After we visited my family in Japan in December, we left Japan on January 2nd. Avoided the tax! Yessss!

I love seeing people complain about it when they actually don’t understand how it works. And it’s even funnier when Aussies complain because they don’t even realise they pay $108 every time they depart Australia 😂

I think we pretty much pay taxes on everything (that's what I believe anyway, don't quote me on that).
