Japan Tourism down 99.9% in April (Travel Update)

In April, only 2,900 tourists visited Japan. That is 0.1% of the total from last year. The last time it was this bad was before 1964. In the travel update, we’ll talk about who actually visited and the current situation for domestic travel in Japan. The Japanese government made a few key announcements including stimulus for domestic travel to encourage travel for Japanese in Japan. I’ll take your questions at the end.

I am still holding out hope for the end of June. I know I am being silly but what do we have if not hope 😁✈️😁

Are there any special precaution we need to take before we plan to travel to Japan this year?

With tourism down so low has the Japanese government began to put in motion any particular method of indemity for the businesses (especially the family/small owned) suffering from all this? Thanks John. -Elisha M.

Any word about Japan just opening up for the ones that were stranded abroad (e.g. foreigners with working visas)? I'm not even thinking about general tourism at this point.

Countries have found out the hard way that lot of freight (and mail) arrives to their country on passenger aircraft, this is now severely reduced resulting in shortages or items not available at all. What manufacturing have you heard Japan is bringing or reviving back in country that in the past was shifted off shore? (aside from face masks and sanitiser). For Australia there are a number of items where primary supply was offshore but now local production has ramped up to guarantee supply.

Without there being a treatment or vaccine what are your thoughts on whether entry to Japan will even be allowed by general tourists without quarantine by end 2020 from the hardest hit countries like USA, Brazil, UK? ATM it's like they should be 🙅🏼‍♂️☠☠️ due to high risk?

Has there been any sort of large vocal opposition towards lockdown requests in Japan? In Australia, certain MPs, business owners and Sky News are expressing their discontent to state premiers for either lifting restrictions too early, or not lifting them early enough.

Hi John! What happens to people who cannot pay their rent due to being laid off? Is there a rent moratorium? Stay safe, stay well, stay in, John and Kanae.
