Got a few new patrons past couple of days, just wanted to say WELCOME again and THANK YOU for being here! :D

I'm keeping it hush from IG, but I'm taking a short break from posting to really drill my art fundamentals, which I've neglected the past couple of months cuz I was hyper-focused on learning how to draw comics and caught up with the massive surge of followers from Poppy LOL. People love that big headed kid. I've been so used to doing weekly posts on IG (since March last year I think), it's kinda nice to forget about that for a brief period and focus on just my craft, and not content. While working on Reunion, I can confirm 2 things:1. Now I know I definitely want to draw comics, it's no longer a "maybe" which I've said in previous Q&As.2. I have a clear vision, but I lack the skills to bring the ideas to life.

I think point 2 is pretty normal. When I look at all the artists I love, I can appreciate and respect the YEARS they have committed to their craft. Comics are different, it's not the same as just drawing one still, you have to understand really complex anatomy, environments, perspective, expression, panelling etc., I mean, I can really go on. There is also the need for great storytelling skills if you're writing your own story. It's a LOT to cover, something people are not aware of until they start to actually do the work (I'm talking about me, HAHA).

To be honest, I panicked a little bit, not because I didn't enjoy the process, but I was worried about my progress. Not having an art mentor can be difficult at times like this, I can't tell if I'm doing things right, and sometimes I don't know how to move forward. I usually have to put in special effort to summon my problem-solving skills to figure out what the "problems" are in my work, and what I need to do to improve it.And I can gladly say I feel pretty good while doing these studies! It actually has been MONTHS since I last sat down and properly evaluated my work, so I'm really thankful for having Patreon because these are things that are tough to share publicly on social media, and it's daunting when you have a large audience. I guess Patreon is kind of like my safe space, so... welcome to my safe space! :D

Anyway, the good news is I can't seem to stop drawing comics, even if it's just little doodles. I have so much fun cooking up scenarios in my head and writing dialogues, even if they are extremely mundane. I don't know how many of you here are artists or aspiring to be one, but I hope you'll find these studies helpful to you too as I'll be sharing a lot more of them this season! If not, you have these random comic doodles to read haha.

I hope everyone is doing great and staying safe out there. If you're new, PLEASE SAY HI! See you guys in a bit, thanks for sticking around!

Thank youuu 😭 hopefully i can also bring ur comms to the nex lvl HAHA

Cluis

Wow this was something if been looking for. I really want to get better at drawing bodies, but i didn't really find good reference pictures but now you provided some really awesome ones even with a little laugh at the beginning. 😁👍

stephattyy

Thanks Cluis! Im so glad you find it helpful :D I’ll be sharing a lot more of these so stay tuned! 🤍

Jasper Yap

I like the way you draw Hisao and Shiro's face and body. I always sucked at drawing humans (aside from stickmans) and it looks really good! According to my more artsy friends, they say fingers and hands are usually the hardest to draw but you nailed it! I'll be cheering you along your journey no matter what, and I think the same goes for the other 50 patreons! ❤️💯

Wow, how cool that you highlighted the muscles to illustrate what's going on there! Thank you for sharing, this is very informative and cool!

stephattyy

Oh yes, fingers are such a pain D: but tbh i struggle more with torsos and fabric due to the lack of references. With hands I can at least look at my own HAHA but tbfair i have a LOT left to learn so i just gotta really focus on one thing at a time and be patient with the process 😂 im too impatient sometimes LOL. Thank u for being here 😭❤️

stephattyy

Thanks Autumn! I hope to do much more and maybe it’ll help me a lot as I attempt to make more comics in the future haha 😂

Comment from my artist self: Awesome studies! Your strokes on those sketches have great confidence, and your consistency in their character designs is *chef's kiss*🔥 The lil comics are not only fun and interesting, they also help to flesh out the characters' personalities, and I think that's another example that shows you're flowing with creativity (probably more than you even think!). About the comic creating process, I know it's a lot to work on and that it feels intimidating, but let me tell you that what you've shared so far, seems to be pretty much the standard that many want to reach to start creating their comics. That you're all already at that level gives you a great base to start, and you understand your fundamentals and use them very well! There is no hurry to get better, and we will be here cheering you on on your creative journey and hopefully even learning along with you! (I will, since I'm in the process of creating my first comic as well :D) Lastly, I'm sure you're studying a lot about illustrating and story telling and all that, but I always recommend one of my favorite YouTubers why had very helpful videos about comic creating and everything that goes with it, he's Walter Ostlie, he has great content and tutorials/pep talks. If you know him already then even better 👍 So excited to see what you create next!!!

Comment from my fan self: ASDFGHJKL these are so good!! Also TOTALLY not a tutorial on 'how to draw Shiro' on that first one, not at all 😏 Also for heaven's sake, I don't usually simp over shirtless men but oh My Lord there's something about young Hisao that I can't figure out why but it's making me feel stuff and I'm confused 👀👀👀💪💪💪 How am I supposed to concentrate on the studies when these people are so ridiculously good looking that it's distracting 😭😭😭 Love the comics too 💕 (that was totally not a cat, it's okay man)

daniel tal

I'm not an artist, so I can't really comment on the anatomy itself (looks great though), but the dialogue was really funny😂

stephattyy

Thank you so much Michie! 🥺 it means a lot to me what you’re sharing. I actually struggle with consistency a lot, i tend to hv to make changes here and there til things look “right” but i want to assume as i continue drawing and get familiar with how my OCs are supposed to look, it wouldnt be this hard anymore :’D And YES I FOLLOW WALTER OSTLIE. I LOVE his stuff man he’s a total lifesaver. If i ever get on webtoon especially, u bet im gonna rewatch all his vids 😂 its so cool that you’re working on your own comics too! Would love to see them when you’re ready to share :D

stephattyy

And THANK U 😂 some might not be aware but Hisao is actually allergic to cats, he’d hv to take meds to curb his allergies if he wants to play with them LOL. Honestly if i keep practicing i can foresee my OCs will look slightly different again next month, i’m rediscovering new things i wanna change about the way they are drawn everyday 😂 well we shall see!

stephattyy

HAHA aw bless thanks Daniel! 😂 my comic doodles are always so random LOL im glad u dig hahaha

stephattyy

Oh i feel u 100%, i think what you’re going thru is actually pretty normal! As artists we never stay satisfied with our progress for too long, we’re always looking for ways to improve or switch things up. I’m glad you find this helpful tho, i’m in the process of switching things up too so we shall do this tgth! :3

Jasper Yap

I think the body is just a bit more pain than the face itself (let's exclude Shiro's anti-physics hair for a moment) bcs our eyes are just so used to staring at different faces. But I like the quick doodles in the first few pages. Shiro's face is WhatsApp sticker material HAHAHAH

Sara Marigomen

Ah this was a good quick demo from easy-to-understand images (and I also think the chibi convo was so cute)! I totally relate to you about the progress difficulties because I have also been trying to teach myself to draw since the beginning of quarantine here in the US, and I feel like blocks when I hit those plateaus of progress and don't know how to overcome them sometimes since I don't have someone directing me. Truly trying to ball on a budget ya know? LOL. But despite the plateaus, I keep drawing at least a little bit in order to keep at it and don't give into to the thought of giving up!

stephattyy

Thank you Sara 😭 appreciate it! I think we all have the same problem, trying to make some progress in general is really tough especially when you’re self-directed for the most part. Well messing up is part of learning so i try not to stress over mistakes so much and just celebrate the tiny things 😂 dont gv up indeed!

Anja

Fascinating to see how it is done and all the work that goes into it!
