HEY EVERYONE - firstly thank you all for showing da love for the continuation of The Reunion, I'm glad you guys are interested in the story!

I have a tiny favour to ask. Y'know after sharing the post on here yesterday I was looking at it and somehow the overall aesthetic didn't sit well with me. I think part of the reason is just me not being fully satisfied with the way I draw people (though this will always be a WIP), but another thing I figured could be my use of colours. There's just so much saturation, I think too much of it can be a little unpleasant to look at when it's a series. There's this thing called eye strain xD I recall reading it somewhere by a comic artist who commented on how he picks his colour, so I wanted to try adjusting the colours on mine.

Normally I wouldn't really share my revisions but this one is kind of more obvious and it does somewhat change the overall mood of the comic. It's less orange, I added a "moody" feel to it and decreased the contrast so it looks "flatter", which I think sounds negative but aesthetically I kind of dig it. I really wanna get more opinions on this, would love it if you guys could share your thoughts and which one you prefer since you are the readers, and your feedback matters a lot!

P.S. there are no right or wrong answers HAHA, thanks a ton guys <3

I actually like the revised colours much more 🙈🙈🙈 it has more drama

OH! Thats cool :D well I kind of prefer the revised version too but it could just be my bias, thanks for sharinf your thoughts gurlfren 🥰

Maya

Okay, so when looking at the first version I see a lot of bright colors that automatically give me a happier mood( if my explanation makes sense ahah). So in the first version I (as a reader) don’t expect the plot to become tense once that the new girl meets up with Shiro( so it was kinda like a surprise for me). Brighter colors make the whole thing feel more like a cute comedy? And the second version of course makes the mood more serious, especially when we see the new girl meeting up with Shiro. So with “darker” colors as a reader I expect the new girl to bring more trouble for our MC’s. (P.s. my knowledge in art is very limited, so this is just my personal opinion) 😂

stephattyy

Ohhh! You’re right I actually didn’t consider that! In my head because I already knew the new girl was gonna bring some trouble it didnt occur to me that the reader might not notice that until it was revealed later. I’m not sure if i wanted it to be that obvious either but yea the brighter colours makes the comic look more cheerful and i guess thats not really the mood i was going for. Thanks for sharing Maya 🥰🥰

Probably just me but I didn't dig deep enough into it. I liked the first version better. I feel like the facial expressions were enough for me to understand that this was sad for her, but for the most part she was happy until Shiro showed up, so I dont really see a change, but again that's probably just me. 🙂 I like the comments from earlier though because they made me think about it more.

stephattyy

Thanks Joey!! I’m really happy to hear that the expressions conveyed the message (I struggle with expressions a lot), the first one definitely has more attractive colours so it’ll probably be more appealing on social media, might get more clicks with it :B appreciate your thoughts!

First, I didn't thought anything of the colours before. Your comics are always very saturated so I didn't think much of it. But now, seeing the revised ones, I dig them much more. The very saturated colours are good for the Poppy episodes, but for the Reunion I feel like a more "serious" mood os appaling

stephattyy

Thanks Paolo! You’re right, I think because Poppy was my first comic and the tone of the series is a lot more silly and fun, I’ve gotten used to saturated colours cuz it fits the mood better. It’s a matter of adjustment and I’ve always figured once I start drawing Iekami, it definitely cannot look the same as the art style in Poppy cuz there would be a huge disconnect HAHAHA. I guess that same idea applies to every other series I will draw in the future, definitely food for thought! Appreciate your feedback! 🥰

i really like both sets of color palettes! but i will say, i think the revised edition is better at using color symbology and showing the progression of rhea’s feelings through the comic. i also like how you added the lamp in the final page and kinda show how it’s turning to nighttime- also cool as a symbol!

Joshua I. Gilmer

Like what a couple of other folks were saying, the revised colors do a good job making the scene feel moodier and less dreamlike. The new palette also helps me focus on the characters and the story since it's all a bit easier to look at. So if there's some edgy and/or sad tones to this chapter, or if it's about Rhea's feelings being explored, then the revised palette conveys all that epically. I think the more saturated palette was more standout-ish and helped set your comic apart from others in the beginning. So when moving towards moodier coloring it may help to add callbacks to previous comics or to up the symbolism in your new scenes, because since the old comics were *literally* brighter and happier-looking they might give readers "the good ol' days" vibes which would be a cool tool to employ; IDK if all that's possible, since I'm not sure where your story's going, but I just thought of that and figured I'd share. Also I think the way you draw people has a kind of iconic feel, Steph! It reminds me vaguely of the way Hajime Isayama draws characters, which I've always liked, so I personally think there's no rush to improve a lot in that area.

Md Haziq

Personally for the first 2 panels I prefer the original version cause it seems livelier due to the brighter colours. Plus, I prefer rhea's hair to be more golden haha. But for the last panel, I think the evening sky looks better with the revised version. & I think it sets the sad mood better as well. The original version's sky kinda gives off sunset by the beach vibes. Hahaha so specific

Md Haziq

Maybe a combination works or perhaps characters one set of colour schemes, background another? Idk if that's possible haha, I don't have art background. Maybe for the Iekami series the revised version will suit it more? Since it's supposed to be more serious, especially with the vigilante stuff

stephattyy

Oh yeah! Haha i added it cuz i felt like it was too empty 😂 thank you! I’m glad you think so, maybe I could still bump up the saturation slightly just so it wont look too different from chapter 1, but as of now i do think its just easier on the eyes when the colours are more dull :P thanks for sharing your thoughts!

stephattyy

OH thanks so much Joshua! 🥰 i think Rhea’s story arc is more like a coming of age genre, so its not necessarily moody but it will eventually discuss more serious things, and i guess the moodiness helps! I initially envisioned myself to use a lot more warmer tones so its kinda cool to see how it looks when its cooler, no pun intended LOL. I just dont want the series to end up having the same feel as Poppy. Also thank you about that character thing, i dont think anyone i know has ever made a ref to Hajime’s work from mine! Hahaha but thats nice to know, I’m just usually worried about having my art style look tooo cartoony which would be a problem when I go into the Iekami series someday. Anywho, thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🥰

stephattyy

Haha yea i have considered this! But i think i just havent figured out a way for the aesthetics to look cohesive when the characters and bg have different color filters, worth experimenting next tho thanks for the idea! I think for Iekami, I honestly just cant see myself drawing them the same way I currently do for the series, it still has too much of a cartoony feel to it (maybe its just me), I’m hoping I can find a middle ground between DC and manga style art, it’s really a tricky one 😅 im kinda impatient but i swear once i figure out the aesthetics AND how to draw action scenes, I’m going full speed into Iekami LOL. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Joshua I. Gilmer

Yeah of course, Steph! Happy to give my two cents. I think Isayama came to my mind since his art style has dramatically improved since he started releasing his work, yet it's maintained this like almost impressionistic focus on lines and musculature, if that makes sense? Anyway you both seem to like sharp lines, at least I think XD ALSOOO I'm super excited to see where you want to take everyone's storylines next~!!

Cluis

The first version looks a bit warmer than the revised one. That was the first thought that I had. But apart from that, both look absolutely gorgeous. 🥰 And with the more warmth that is presented in the 1st version, personaly I think it makes the customer more intimidating on the 2nd page because it underlines her beauty better. If you know what I mean? Those are just my thoughts. 😊

Md Haziq

Ohhhh dc style. You're getting me more & more interested for the Iekami series! Dunno if you've ever seen the darkest night arc of green lantern for dc but the flash in the colour blue was sooooo good. I hope shiro & his dad don't wear costumes when they do vigilante work cause then they'll be too cool hahaha. Kinda like nightwing & red hood from batman

Md Haziq

I think for the action scenes, superhero comics & manga are definitely great sources, though I don't actually read manga 🙉 Maybe one punch man can be a good source? I certainly enjoyed the anime but am not sure how difficult it'll be to translate the action to comics

stephattyy

Ohh, you’re right! I kinda didnt see it that way. I think the general consensus so far is that the revised version is easier on the eyes and sets the tone well, but it washes out the characters instead, so i suppose I’ll have to find a way to retain that moodiness from the revised without sacrificing the appeal of the characters in the process! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Cluis! Appreciate it 🥰

stephattyy

HAHA I only watched the OPM anime, never checked out the manga! I actually try to reference from manga more than western comics for action scenes cuz I feel like they simplify it well and rely on special effects more, whereas DC or Marvel comics imo i feel has too much detail on every frame and its too hard to read (and very time consuming). I can assure you that they wont be wearing costumes, they are meant to blend in, wearing underwear on the outside is not gonna help HAHAHAHAHAHA

stephattyy

Ahaha i see! Well thanks a lot 🥺 yea i’m trying to focus on line art but cant decide if i like it fine or thick LOL. I guess i’ll keep experimenting to figure out what works best!

Saikô

Everyone here has said what I tough so imma just tell you to keep going, you work so hard, give yourself some credits ! 💛 You got this QUEEN ! ✨

stephattyy
