Hello, new and old readers and welcome to The Wandering Inn's...story! I don't run the inn itself. This update is about how the physical book coming out affects Volume 1 and Volume 2 on the site.

Volume 1 and 2 of The Wandering Inn are exclusively available for Patreon and the only way to access them is via a paid tier on Patreon. So:

Blue Juice Tier ($1) or higher -- Access to Volumes 1-2 on the site.

Jar of Acid Tier ($5) or higher -- Access to the latest chapter and poll every two months plus Blue Juice Tier.

Please bookmark this post so you can refer back to it; it'll also act as a Table of Contents with all the chapters below so you can access them with the password at any time. You can only use these links to access the chapters on the site. The Table of Contents will now redirect new readers to a page where they can find the series from retailers.

I hope you enjoy the beginning of The Wandering Inn, and the volumes after those currently published still remain free and accessible for all. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the story. If you ever get a chance to visit this inn which is so often talked about...don't order the acid flies.

Great I think I’ll love having the physical book in my hands.

Jen

Excited to have the books in physical form!!

vero sq

AHHHH I CAN'T WAIT

Flagestis

The physical book will look good next to pan i bought

Eric Bruce

Aaa I dont understand it says physical copy all I see is links can someone explain what this post means

Borantio

"Today, I lost more than you could know."

Irideae

So am I understanding that right that the first two volumes as they are on the website rn will be put behind patreon? While I get that it's an incentive to sell the books (which I'm super excited for), I feel like it really ruins the onboarding for new readers, coz they're gonna have to either get the books (money investment) or join the patreon (which is a bit to ask, and not because of the price tag). I know it's not my decision but I felt compelled to give my two cents as a long-time reader.

LurkNautili

Wait, what? Is there really no way to avoid this?

theWorst

I love that you are getting physical copies of the first two volumes. I want to own them. I will not be buying them because of this right here.

Irideae

Fair point.

Laurence White

It is part of the deal. It's in the update post.

Greg Pettit

I agree strongly with this post. I understand why a publisher would want to put the book behind a pay wall...but it would make a ot more sense to leave at least the first dozen chapters up for free to get people hooked. Physical book sales have a horrible margin - I hope this works out for Pirateaba, but I fear it may not.

Algernon

While i love the fact that the books will be edited as physical copies and am 100% planning to buy them, putting books 1 and 2 behind paywalls will be a major blow for new readers of the series. I understand that this is likely enforced by the publisher and that the 1 dollar Tier is your attempt at finding a workaround to this issue, I can't help but think this is saddening. I personally wouldn't be a patreon if the story's ealry chapters had been behind paywalls when I first started. I also worry the paywall might have the unintended consequence of encouraging starting readers to drift towards pirated copies of TWI, since I'm guessing many webnovel fans are too young to become paid patrons. Idk maybe I'm going on meaningless tangents here. Still, it's amazing that TWI will finally get printed, I love this for you

Simerop

The physical copies will come out in the future, but as part of the publishing deal all of the chapters that get released physically are put behind a paywall

Tetra

The team has obviously been doing a lot of work on the new website. Are there any future plans to have books 1&2 more supported through that page? like an account that is linked to patron. Having this this post be the TOC is such a waste when so much work has been put into website UI design (and much harder to recommend).

theWorst

I cannot even bring myself to read the new chapter because of the limitations created over the publication of volume one and two. I get they are because of the publishers, but I see them as such a slap in the face to your fans and any potential new readers... that I am actually considering ending my subscription to the patreon.

Vitruvius

I appreciate you making it so easy to pirate (and pay for). I assume that this was a token measure, so that the publisher doesn't have to publicly violate their exclusivity policy (which would make it harder for them to negotiate for that policy with other authors).

Ryan

I'm excited that there's going to be physical copies and I've already pre-ordered a copy from Amazon*. Is this going to lead to any changes to the way the story is written? Does the publisher have any say over the content of the story? By that I mostly mean is the publisher going to push you to write the story in a certain way or shorten the way the you write? *Will you be doing any kind of collectible version, like selling signed copies yourself? Will you make available ebook copies of the story to long term Patrons or create accounts on your website that will allow for permanently unlocked access to the early volumes as they're published? I say this as nicely as possible, but I and a lot of others have given you quite a lot of money over the years through Patreon to support you writing this story and sharing it with us. I don't expect things for free and I don't have an issue with you taking down free access in general now that you're going to be publishing the book. That being said, it's more than a little aggravating that you're telling me I'll have to continue paying you every month to continue to have access to content that, no offense to you, I feel I've already paid you for. I've been a Patron for over four years now, I think I've earned continued access to the story.

J

Already pre-ordered. I only had Patreon because I felt bad not giving anything after getting such an amazing world and story. Glad I can support you. You deserve it.

Valmorian

not that I could store it without a storage unit but I'd love to see this in braille anyway. or on bard or bookshare. Happy to support though. Thank you for the story! it really is my top favorite

Ground Control

Aba should have fought harder for this. I think more fantasy/fiction inclined publishers would have handled this better e.g tor, dark horse. Harper might be bigger but feels more like a traditional publisher. They probably have a fantasy section of general titles. But no real understanding of sub genres. Considering the amount of rework that would go into a paperback, the web version and the paperback are likely to be completely different. Think entire plot points, scenes, characters cut. It'll be tighter, better in some ways. But different.

Binis Belev

Imagine my frustration when I wanted to pre-order the books and was told there is no delivery option to Bulgaria. There is delivery options for mid Africa but not Europe. Go figure...

Immortal R.C.

Are there plans for a digital version of the full, rewrote first book, that is not on Patreon? Patreon is really painful to read on (it is not a good platform to read a book). I bought the first book on Kindle, but it is the old version, and losses a lot of content.

Ged Merrilin

Really hope the paywall is temporary and just lasts through the initial launch of the physical books. It will really hurt the ability of new readers to start. It's much harder for me to recommend it to a friend when its paid rather than free

DM

Hey Binis, if you like I am willing to send you copies if you share your mailing info. You can pay me back after. I trust fellow readers!

ScarletIce

I think something is wrong with the site. I'm logged in as a patron but when I try to read past chapter 1.34 it just gives me a page talking about buying the books. Navigating directly from the links in this post seem to work though.

Binis Belev

Ah, thank you for the offer. There is no need to bother ppl with problem I can solve. It's just that I really hate it when I'm treated like 3rd rate citizen of the world. Enjoy the books. I know I will!

Sheena Beena

So I had to pay for the Kindle because these links do NOT work. I got to Book 2 Chapter 29 and hadn’t been able to move forward.

Sheena Beena

I’m also probably in the minority but I’m also a new reader so maybe the series veterans have more insight but does the author start to actually justify the nasty attitude towards Pisces? Right now NONE of the contempt he receives is justified outside of his choice to be a necromancer. Erin is constantly rude and disrespectful towards him for no reason whatsoever. The adult in me is getting a little annoyed at what seems to be bullying. There just isn’t enough in this book right now to justify his treatment so I’m left thinking he’s a character based off of someone she knows personally or just poorly written. Everything he’s done so far (after his first attempt to rob Erin) has been HELPFUL. He’s a genius, why wouldn’t Erin give him a room at the inn to HELP? No one cares enough about him to wonder where he lives. The MC knows he’s ostracized for the most part but only offers him 1 meal a day? But she will bring in a known thief with a vile attitude as a barmaid? Don’t get me wrong, I have strong opinions about Erin as well. But it seems the author at least acknowledges that Erin is supposed to be destructively naive and willfully ignorant yet she gives no real reason for why Pisces is treated the way he is. She actually contradicts herself because the characters seem to understand Lyonnettes behavior yet, as stated above, Pisces is not even close to nasty as she is. And she gets a bed?! Erin literally saw his attempt to pay her back only to have it all confiscated and that counted for NOTHING? Just one free meal and nasty treatment. What has he done to deserve that it’s really frustrating.

Sheena Beena

Sorry there’s more. Pisces FIXED RYOKAS SHATTERED LEG!! One of a handful of people in that world that could do so. RYOKA!!! You mean to tell me that act ALONE isn’t enough for room and board? To be quite honest I don’t like how the author downplayed that fat at all. It was clear Ryoka would have either had to go to Magnolia or remove her leg. What he did was worth WAY more than 40 gold yet not even the author gave him the proper credit. Thinking about that in terms of Earth standards that’s easily $500k worth of work performed on her leg. Why are they ignoring that and treating him like trash. Why is the MC confused on just how great Pisces is ? The only one who seems to get it is Ceria and even she downplays him. How does no one see that Toren is LEVELING?!? WHY IS ERIN SO DUMB!!!???? It’s irritating how ignorant she is lol

Mark Morrison

Erin has only been in the world a few months at that point, I think ? She has very little understanding of what is normal for the world. How is she supposed to know how skeletons should behave ? As for Pisces, there are reasons why he is the way he is, and reasons people don't trust Necromancers. Keep reading !

Sheena Beena

I disagree with the Erin point. While she is new to the world she is not a child. And being a chess prodigy only accounts for a small part of her ignorance. There are far more things that she does that are inexcusable and make no sense from any standpoint. Case and point her inability to recognize important people. She’s a Chess prodigy and she spoke often and in awe about Chess Grand masters so she has enough experience to understand important people. Yet when her friends are awe struck about one adventurer or another she’s completely clueless? “Is he someone important?” What kind of question is that? She has done NOTHING to familiarize herself with the world more and the magic system outside of occasional questions. Hasn’t purchased a map, a history book, nothing. She refuses to learn how to properly defend herself, and still has no idea why keeping the fact that she’s from another world is dangerous. It’s as if she never learned Anything from Earth. How? She was talking about enrolling in college….. she’s travelled to other countries. Why can’t a college-bound, well-traveled, young adult better navigate foreign situations. You mean she knows enough to learn local customs and courtesy’s of other nationalities while competing but none of that happens when she’s on a whole new world? She’s more trusting of alien creatures than humans? And to the Pisces point, that was why I asked my question because as of chapter 33 in Book 2. NOTHING justifies his treatment and I understand why people in general don’t trust necromacers in new to this series not this genre. But again, Erin is making a point to ignore the local biases right so she doesn’t care that he’s a necromancer. So why does SHE continue to treat him poorly. By ALL counts up to this point he has been helping Erin MORE than anyone else. The point I made about Ryokas leg stands. That alone should have been worth room and board for the considerable future. So when do we get a valid justification or will it be like this for all the books?

Will Murray

Pisces is rude, mean spirited, deliberately abrasive. You say nothing justifies his treatment which is wild to me. You discount the absurd kindness of taking someone who tried to break into your home to threaten you with violence and rob and steal from you and allowing them to stay in your inn for free and feeding them when you yourself are destitute and in a very unstable position. This person then precedes to be unkind to you and your guests, laze around and makes no visible attempts to pay you back and you still let him stay because you see the goodness within him. The healing of Ryoka's leg was the labor of about an hour and you can argue it is the exceptional work that would be worth a lot of money but first off this is not done on Erin's request unless I am misremembering these first books, and secondly who says Erin has context to know the value of these services. I love Pisces he is easily one of my favorite characters but to claim he deserves better treatment because he is a genius or valuable is absurd to me. He is a real prick to everyone and gets back exactly what he puts out.

Sheena Beena

I disagree. I addressed this and as written Pisces rarely starts the unpleasant conversations. The characters go out of their way to be rude with him first. At best he’s abrasive and he is nowhere near as intolerable and Lyonette. Didn’t Relc spit in Erin’s face? And saying he made no effort to pay her back is not true because he did. The first thing he thought about after healing Ryoka was paying her back. He had no other way to make money at that time so you disregarding that is weird. No Erin did not request it but Ryoka is Erin’s friend, so why wouldn’t she? She saw him trying to pay her back and then get his money confiscated …. By my count he has performed a feat only a handful of people on that continent are able to do, he provided Erin with a body guard and helper for free, He alerted everyone that Ceria was alive and went to help, he helped Erin defend her inn, and has only asked for food. And no, I’m not saying that he deserves better treatment because he’s a genius I’m saying he deserves better treatment because outside of the antiniums to this point he has been the MOST helpful to Erin. And Erin has treated arguably WORSE characters better. So I’m saying it makes no sense that she didn’t even OFFER him a job or a room yet she went out of her way to employ a girl who objectively has done worse. Lyon and Pisces were in the same situation and resorted to the same thing yet only Pisces has atoned but Lyon gets a job? That makes no sense. And you are also infantilizing Erin by saying she has no context of the value of that skeleton. She doesn’t need context or to know the intricacies of the spell to know how VALUABLE an unpaid assistant is. He doesn’t get tired, he doesn’t need to eat, he understands basic commands and if she took the time to teach him he would understand more, yet she still trusts him to train Lyon….. ANY 20 year old should understand how INVALUABLE that is and to say otherwise I think is disingenuous. From what I’m reading Pisces is on the receiving end of the unpleasant conversations more than he initiates them. Ceria is the only one who seems to acknowledge his worth and even she doesn’t do him justice. In my opinion based on these first 2 books so far he has atoned for his earlier mistakes doubly so.

Sheena Beena

So I just got to a point in the book where not only does Pisces nicely teach Erin about auras but when he goes into what he did with Toren EVEN Ceria acknowledged that it was weird that he gave her Toren for free. And Erin finally acknowledges how invaluable Toren is. So my original post was asking whether the author ever really gives a valid reason why he’s treated so poorly in later books because based on what I’ve read so far there’s little to justify it and even the author seems to validate that now. She has already made it clear that Erin is not very smart several times through the Faeris and Ceria but I’m not reading anything outside of the earlier situation when he was robbing everyone not just Erin tha justifies her only willing to offer him one meal a day. I just don’t. I hope tha changes. I hope Erin gets smarter and starts to actively take an interest not only in this world but in her skills and I hope Pisces is redeemed because right now if feel Ill-deserved and a little like bullying. Like we have to have a dislikable character so the author just threw him in there but with no real thought on how to make it stick. He’s not even Draco Malfoy level rude Lyonette still holds that crown. If anything everyone should be treating her with contempt more than Pisces. Jus my thoughts though

Agree with the comments above about putting the first two volumes behind paywalls. It's kind of disappointing and harder for new readers to get on board. Additionally as more print editions for the later volumes are published, it's pretty clear that the online chapters will subsequently follow the same pattern. I'm a long time fan and reader but this isn't the way to go, even if it means getting amazing print copies out!

Florian

Just signed up to Patreon for the first time in order to be able to have access to the text in parallel to listening to audiobooks. I'm actually a very new fan and just about to finish with book 1. I really don't mind the paywall at all (especially for only 1$), what I'm much more curious about is how the rewrites done for book 2 are incorporated into the audiobook. I already started with the book 1 rewrite version of the audiobook, so I really don't want to start on book 2, before the audiobook has also been updated to match it. But I'm a bit worried about Andrea having left the series and whether she would still be willing to do the "second edition" updates for book 2. Any information on that front?

Freddy

Pirating copies and hard for new readers to pay 1$? What's so hard supporting the author you like?

Freddy

Some of you have a ridiculous attitude. Paying 1$ to start reading the story is not going to stop new readers. New reader read book series and pay 10-20$ per book so that is never an issue.

LordDagonTheMad

Is it normal I only see the Volume 1 part 1 and 2? I can seem to be able to order volume 2 part ine and two in paperback for Canada.

randy

And the autographed hardcover?

tiago matias

Where is the pre buy? My dumb ass is to tired to find it....

fatJahorse

Yeah, disliked Erin and her treatment of Pisces when I was on Book 1 as well. I think it's kinda a gag that the other insults Pisces, which I agree is sad, but he's also become my favourite character now. We also do get a Pisces backstory, which is one of, if not my favourite section of the story so far, and it's like in book 4. I'm halfway through book 9 now and Erin is in my top 3 favourite characters, so I would say she does get better! But yeah, Erin is one of those characters that turn people off a LOT when they get into the story. I hope you continue reading! I actually ship Pisces and Erin as well😭 Lyonette is also a character I thought was a bit eh when she was introduced but over time she's also become a top 5 character for me.

Just preordered each of the paperback copies from Barnes and noble! I am curious about what the editing entails- I swear I remember one of Erin’s speeches about Chess very differently to my second read through and it has been driving me crazy to know if it changed or if I somehow skipped the one I have been thinking about.

Yes ERIN is very annoying in book 1. I only persisted with the audiobook because I knew that this series was really loved and longstanding. Putting up with 5 hours of more of her tedious behaviour was worth it though because she is one of my favourite characters along with Pisces and so many really. All I can say is hang in there. Don’t stress if words in audiobook changed. Just enjoy Andrea’s narration and go with the flow. You will enjoy it more. And the next narrator is very good too. Change is hard. But so worth it to be able to continue listening to the audiobooks. This series is THE favourite of over 300 audible books I now have.

Is something going on with the website? I haven’t been able to access the books 6 or 7 since yesterday.

Cathy Fochler

So I'm part way through book 3 and now when I try to go into the site to continue reading and click on the troll it bumps me back to chapter 1 of the first book and when I click on next chapter I get a 404 error code. Yes I am a patron

Deana Hallett

Cant access volume 1-3 today through patreon link and password anymore. 403 error code *update: switching my default browser fixed this problem for me. Switched from Google chrome to Firefox.

Chetan Vangala

I'm getting the same 403 error code as a lot of other people. Think it's likely an issue with the cloud flare integration. Seems to be causing issues with the book and the webcomic.

Suzy Berry

Is there any update on the error code? It tells me everything is forbidden but for my.membership I should be able to keep reading.

Elyssae

Neither can I. I'm a contributer on Patreon as well. I get a pop up making sure I'm a real person and then a 403 Forbidden page.

Eugenio Cazzo

Wait I am so confused why are these being paywalled??? The whole point of the TWI is that it’s a webnovel people can read online…

RedMonty

It’s because the physical copies of the books are coming out and harpercollins doesn’t want the author’s primary competition for book sales to be the author.

Krynh

Non-autographed paperback

randy

it was a joke. But Pirate did say didn't want to sign books. Which I am sure could get >$100 for a signed hardcover. Probably sign name 1000 times and get $100,000. Oh well.

Frostlion

Something HarperCollins might go for, is making the first part of the first book free online. Maybe through 1.16 (Erin invites the Goblins for dinner after killing their chieftan): 1.18 (beating Lism at chess and the "no killing Goblins" sign) or 1.19 (First Ryoka chapter). That'd be enough to really give people a taste for the story, but still make them want to buy the book if they like it.

Adam Israel

Already ordered my physical copies. Very excited for The Wandering Inn gaining a wider readership and broader availability, plus the inimitable cool factor of being able to place these on the bookshelf alongside other beloved series. I’m sure the $1 charge for reading online will prove no barrier to anyone who understands that supporting the author is the obvious ethical complement to enjoying their work.

H T

So it's still OK to gift membership, a month full pension at the inn gives access to 1-"4"?

brufi

The paywall is reasonable but I think it needs more then the first chapter to get readers hooked. It took me about 5 or 6 chapters to get hooked, this amount needs to be free and it will also benefit Harper Collins as it will allow that new serial readers grow into book buyers.

Debbie de Geus

how do I get access to the webcomic when I am a Patreon member? I enter the password and it does nothing.

PeaceFrogg333

Sometimes you really, really want to read a new book or a new series, but you're broke and even a dollar is too much. Especially when the content was previously 100% free, from start to finish. I can understand his/her point. Don't be a butt.

Draugmas

They will likely have accessibility via library soon, as well as it still being free on audible plus. I think having physical books themselves will likely bring more readers than it being free on the web.

Draugmas

You could always buy a physical copy and loan it to friends and actually support the writer while sharing something you love.

Toni Xue

If they’re new they wouldn’t know they like it, now would they

Menolit’s tail

The reason I respect pirate so much is because they did not have any reason to keep their content free, they did it for the fans like me who might not have been able to access it otherwise . They could have kept it behind the pay years ago. TWI is one of the best web novel and the only reason I think they did it now is because publishing company would have demanded it in a contract, to they encourage book sales. I’m pretty sure if it was in pirate’s hand they wouldn’t have kept it behind the pay wall.

Matthew Fisher

@Freddy, I think it would have been smarter to make the first book or so free, and have everything after that paid. You don't know after one chapter whether this is something you like enough to pay money for. (I mean, you kinda do that with traditional books, but you know what I mean.) But after you're decently far into the story, you know if you want to support the creator and pay for this series I love to continue.

Matthew Fisher

I think it's more of an online vs physical thing. Online, we are accustomed to things being free, or at least getting a free trial. I'm actually surprised at the setup. I expected the first book to be free, and then everything after to be paid.
