Got pretty far in this show back in the day but never finished it. I remember rooting for Damon and hoping he was endgame, so I'm assuming there's at least SOME character development later on that makes him a tad less awful! Gotta admit though, I still personally don't like Stefan. 🤷🏼‍♀️

You have to remember...you are only in season 1. TVD is a very complex show, with lots of lore and past. I have copied and pasted form < Mandzipop> she is a Patreon member of another reactor ( and she just explains well ...lol )

(Per Mandzipop) Damon is a cute fluffy bunny with very sharp teeth and a bit of an impulsive nature and sometimes a nasty temper to go with it. He is also the most complex character in the show by a long shot. And because of his complexity, he is the most popular character in the show. It may not seem obvious right now, and some reactors don't look past some of his behaviour and question why, like they do with other character who tend to be more easily forgiven when they act the same or worse. Damon only wanted to split Stefan and Elena up because he wanted Stefan to leave Mystic Falls so he could rescue Katherine without Stefan's interference. Ironically it appears that Damon's little road trip has helped her and Stefan get back together. If Damon doesn't view her as Katherine then Stefan wouldn't either. She needed time away to think about what she'd found out and discuss it with the best person who could give any insight into Katherine. This is probably one of the most important episodes of the entire show. There are certain episodes which carry the story right up until the final episode of the series. This is one of them. Most episodes have some crucial events, but this has more than the majority. We have Damon and Elena getting to know one another, revelations about Elena (and Stefan's earlier role in her life), we discover Damon had a hand in Ric's wife going missing, Anna is introduced to us and we discover that the Gilbert's aren't the only ones with journals which have been handed down mentioning vampires, all of the founding families had them, we discover the reversal spell for opening the tomb is in Emily's grimoire. We find out Bonnie's Grams already knew Stefan and when a witch's magic is blocked, it is usually down to fear and they need to face it to get their magic back. That is a lot for one episode.

The previous episode was called Turning Point...here is the Turning Point. Before Elena admits to loving to Stefan they were broken up, they sleep together she finds out about Katherine, she leaves him again. This accident take places, Damon saves her from this accident, then we see Elena have real fun, free from the worries of her life back at home, for the first time on the show and have a different kind of energy with how she feels and the way she acts while around Damon. Then she save his life at the very end, just like how he saved her life at the beginning. Interesting enough, in the same episode that Damon saves her life for the first time, she learns about Stefan saving her from her previous accident. Future of what is to come and the past coming together. Who is she with after the big bombshell about Katherine? Damon. Who does she talk to after all of this? Damon. She has no desire to talk to Stefan. The setup for the rest of the show was done right here concerning the Triangle. You don't title an Episode Turning Point, and then have this as the next episode with out it having significant meaning for the future of the show. Also she gets to see Damon for the first time, before anyone else on the show, a different side of Damon and from a different perspective, shedding new light on his character for her, than the one she's seen or from Stefan's perspective, some of it comes from another woman and some just talking to him. Fast forward to season 4, we see how Stefan is reacting here in this episode when Elena is with Damon is a preview to how he reacts when she is with Damon for real, a year later and some months. Edit: Even during the scene when Lexi's boyfriend is about to Kill Damon, she says the exact words that Lexi said to her "She said when it's real, you can't walk away" right afterwards she begs for Damon's life. All the while in this Scene Damon is in front of her, in the foreground of the scene with her the background, a literal foreshadowing.| Edit #2: If we think about the ending also, Stefan basically lays this big information dump on her, him saving her, then the adopted business, and she gets really emotional, then he tells her he loves her. She is in a very vulnerable state right now with all of this information, it's a perfect way to take advantage of the situation as well as ensure that whatever time she had spent with Damon was forgotten.

My mom and I got into the show together and we felt the same way about Damon. But over time I at least didn't hate him but Stefan is and will always be my favorite character on the show.
