The conversation between Klaus and Damon is interesting concerning forgiveness and the love for Elena. Sure many focus on the Caroline aspect of all this, yet, ignore the significance of Elena in all of this the relationship with the two brothers. Stefan had been trying to hide who he was all the time and the horrible things he had done in the past, and eventually in the present. On the flip side Damon never hid who or what he was, a killer sometimes. Stefan did this to maintain that image of being the better brother than Damon "the killer". Stefan even fostered all of that several times when Elena was gaining insight into Damon as a person. Yet, as Elena discovered more about Stefan's past, as a killer, and season three matters, well it boils down to one thing. There is absolutely no reason she could not love Damon, if she could love and forgive Stefan. It's the very thing that Stefan had been working so hard to prevent in the first three seasons, in hiding who and what he really was.
