So just FYI, Shae is actually a much different character in the books. In the books, she was much younger, and just a girl doing her job as a prostitute. She smiled pleasantly and did what Tyrion paid her to do, but never really gave any hint that she was truly in love with him. Yet, Tyrion, knowing this... falls for her anyway because hes such a desperately lonely man. But there was no surprises at all when she betrayed him. However, in the show, they made many changes to Shae. The actress they cast had a lot more gravitas, and she and Peter Dinklage had so much chemistry. So I think the nature of the relationship changed into a true love story. However, at some point, they needed to revert back to the plot of the books to follow the story. Im not sure they provided enough justification for her betrayal considering the changes. So thats why theres a disconnect here. However, I still enjoy the relationship in the show, probably more than in the books, even if the way they concluded it felt like it needed a bit more.

Remember that when someone tells you to kneel before a king in this universe... it's not as simple as "Have you heard of us? We're called the Free Folk!" There are... actual consequences to one's actions in this world, and they are STEEP. I think we were supposed to learn a lesson from Ned Stark's death, and blindly believing in our principles when it might cause us or our loved ones their lives was not that lesson.
