I, too, almost choked reading this & fortunately had just finished taking a drink otherwise there might have been mojito coming out my nose as well. Pretty sure I’ve had this exact dialogue IRL & at different times even gone with the “just cheap” reason although also usually accompanied by a silent thought of “and I just don’t like you” but mostly it’s an incredulous “because life is effing expensive!”. Unlike me, my MC somehow had the cash. He’s very fiscally responsible. Go figure lol. Fiffer is so me in so many ways… ❤️‍🩹
