The thing about Jinu is, he was invited by the KING. Being 'invited' by the king at that time, that age in korea, was an order, not an invitation. He couldn't refuse and he was not in the place to ask for his family to join. So he had no choice. He could either refuse and get killed for it, whoch would result in his family probably being killed too, or go, leave them, but give them a chance. The castle is also at a very different spot than were they were before when he was playing the bipa, so i think he might've hoped he could take his family but this hope was crushed and his mother knew, thats why she held her daughter back, so jinu could go. And gwima obviously talked it into him then that he left them to die just to get himself out when that for sure wasn't the case. Also in the beginning when you see the first hunters you can see his mother and sister in the background and the sister is holding the one hunters hand, so at least they survived the demons🥹

I don’t know if you knew/realised but the actor who voiced/played Jinu is Ahn Hyoseop, who was the male lead (Kang Taemoo) in the kdrama Business Proposal that you watched!

I don't know if anyone else noticed but when they join together during "What It Sounds Like" Zoey's and Mira's jackets turn from black to white. I think that's a super neat visual representation of them healing.

I’m gonna be honest, I really don’t love that I’ve seen so many fans pushing this interpretation to justify Jinu’s decisions. You’re free to believe what you want, but I think it’s a fundamentally flawed view of his actions and undermines the plot from a storytelling perspective. It’s pivotal that Jinu leaving his family behind was very much his own decision. The historical context isn’t necessary to interpret his motivations, they make sense regardless of the time period. It does seem like he didn’t know he’d have to leave his sister and mother behind until he reached the gate, but by that point he had already sold his soul and was convinced of his worthlessness and inability to serve as a familial protector. It was a selfish decision, driven by an understandable longing for a better life and a deeply ingrained sense of self-loathing. By insisting Jinu had no choice, you’re denying his character the complexity that makes him compelling. The depth of KPDH lies in the allegorical aspects of the narrative rather than the literal events taking place in the “real world.” It’s impressive that the film managed to stay grounded and realistic enough to feel relatable, but leaning too far into real-life explanations (like claiming Jinu ultimately had no choice because of historical context) dilutes both the film’s message and the poignancy of its narrative.
