🇮🇶 Today I’m experiencing one of Kadim Al Sahir’s most celebrated songs: Ana Wa Leila (أنا وليلى) — “Me and Layla.”

This is far more than a conventional love song. It’s a long-form musical poem about unrequited love, poverty, pride and the devastation of believing that social status has taken the person you love away from you.

Thank you so much for supporting the channel! ❤️

Released in 1997 as the title track of Kadim’s album Ana Wa Laila, the song was composed by Kadim around words written by Iraqi poet Hassan Al-Marwani.

The narrator has spent years consumed by his love for Layla, only to be rejected. He believes his lack of wealth and status stood between them, moving between grief, anger, accusation and moments in which he accepts responsibility for his own misplaced hopes.

The story behind the song is almost as remarkable as the music. Kadim reportedly encountered only a few lines of the poem during the 1980s and spent years trying to identify its real author, testing several people who falsely claimed it as their own before finally finding Al-Marwani.

Running for more than thirteen minutes, Ana Wa Leila unfolds like a dramatic monologue rather than a traditional pop song. Kadim’s composition steadily intensifies the poem’s emotional journey until heartbreak begins to feel almost operatic.

Let me know how this song affected you, how you interpret the story between the narrator and Layla — and which Kadim Al Sahir masterpiece I need to experience next!

Thank you every one for helping to support the channel, I am really excited to be able to continue to bring you guys content on my channel, and here on Patreon! 💜

Man, honestly, if you really understood the lyrics and the meaning behind this song, you’d understand why he looked like he was about to cry while singing it. You’d also understand why the song starts slow, then builds up, then slows down again. This isn’t some youth song or dance track. This is a song for people with refined taste in Arabic music. It’s literary, emotional, and full of feeling. It tells the story of a man who loved a woman madly, but she left him for money. Later, life threw her down, she regretted it, and came back to him — but by then, it was already too late.

You need to hear the lyrics…OUT OF THIS WORLD. That is is the most unique thing about arabic music, it describes feelings, situations or a moment in time. There are songs that describe a handshake and another that describe eyes lock. No profanity or sexual desires…ot’s juat all about pure FEELINGS!

Omar Khasraw

You can't miss Madrasat El Hob (In The School Of Love) by him. It rivals this one. Please do that song.

I recommend reading the lyrics and looking into the meaning behind the song. It's poetry set to music.

I’d love to see your reaction to this song: Kathem El-Saher – Madrasatu Al-Hub (School of Love) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aIJgCxrhTQ I also recommend reading the lyrics and paying attention to the meaning behind them. This is not just a song. It is poetry set to music. The lyrics were written by the Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani, and the song carries layers of emotion, imagery, and literary depth that are easy to miss without following the translation. I think your reaction would be especially interesting because there is a lot to unpack in both the words and the performance. The combination of poetry, orchestration, and Kathem Al-Saher’s delivery makes it a unique piece of Arabic music.

I also have another request. National Arab Orchestra – Lama Bada Yatathanna Performed by Abeer Nehme & UMS Choral Union https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aqagk-i842M Lama Bada Yatathanna is a beautiful Andalusian song that has survived for around 700 years. It is believed to date back to the 14th century in Al-Andalus and remains one of the most beloved pieces in the Arabic musical tradition. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the song, the performance, and the meaning behind it.

Najo Jomaa

You should listen to his other best songs: Zidini eshkan , hal indaki shak, ..

Manal

You should know that he also composed it... i recommend you do a reaction video for his songs.. you will be amazed

I suggest that you listen to the songs with subtitles to better understand the melodies and the changes of tunes as Arabic heavily depends on emotional shifts between the instruments and the lyrics and words I do recommend the YouTube channel named MohCoolMan, the channel has the closest translation and gives a context behind certain songs and words.

Hassan Haidar

Hello I’m new here. I think it’s so important for you to know that Kadim is the composer of almost all of his own songs including this one.

Husam Sowaity

Just so you know, the music and the melodies are all his creation as well.

Rawan Ahmed

I love this song so much You should do lyrics with them

Rawan

I believe it would be fair to give this singer his due by listening to a variety of his songs, such as (Mustaleek- Marina 2000 live show ), (Madarasat Al Hob in Riyadh 2022), (Al hob Al Mustaheel), and (Eid Al Ashaq - Video clip ) Also (Tanakothat)

Jinan

Omg PLEASE watch the live version of this with English subtitles, you absolutely NEED the meaning of the lyrics cause it's a poem, Kazim found parts of it and then literally went on a mission to find the poet who wrote the poem because he wanted it fully to sing it, and then he found the poet and it turned out that the poem is about his own life story and what happened between him and the woman he loved, it's absolutely devastating and sad, but the lyrics and all the similes are absolutely gorgeous and meaningful, he credited the poet at the end ot the MV, his name is Hasan Al Marwani, please watch it and thank you so much for you reactions ❤️❤️

Am

He is by far my favorite artist of all times and you sure picked the right song! Love him so much and love your reactions to his music, voice and overall performance. Too bad you don’t know what the lyrics mean because they are so powerful. But I also get it that you have mentioned not knowing what it means makes you focus more on the music and his voice. Also, I’m envious of you for listening to this legendary song for the first time lol.

Maher Khalaf

I actually was waiting to see your reaction of minute 13:21 haha you nailed it. Because that’s a whole transition to the song.
