About getting tanned: in Korea (similar to Japan) most people aspire to have milky white skin, so getting tanned is not considered desirable. They even have creams and lotions that make your skin whiter and paler. During the summer people are super diligent about using very high SPFs and / or covering themselves with clothing. (They even have sun protective clothing). This is a big cultural difference compared to us Europeans, but then again sun does damage the skin easily. This might also partly explain why many Koreans look so young and have really smooth skin :)

so summer/winter packages are literally a package or a photobook they do every year and sell as merch. they get to go to these nice ass places for photoshoots and get a vacation sort of out of it at the same time lol

Jk’s name can be spelt in a couple different ways: Jungkook, Jeongguk, Jungkuk. This is because when some of the letters are romanised, they are translated into sounds. His name written in Hangul is 정국 ㅈ is “J” ㅓ is “eo” (sometimes romanised as “U” so it’s easier for foreigners to pronounce correctly) ㅇ (since it’s at the end) is “ng” ㄱ is a mix between “g” and “k” (can be used for both) ㅜ is “u” (sometimes romanised as “oo” for the same reason as ㅓ) ㄱ is a mix between “g” and “k” again Therefore the reason why there is a few different spellings is just because they are romanised differently (since there is no direct translation). I would say Jeongguk is the closest to the correct pronunciation, “kook/kuk” has too much of a strong “k” sound. It should be softer like a “g” Hope I made sense and that this helps? :)

In Korea (also Japan and China), white or pale skin is praised and seen as beautiful. This stems from when royal girls/women didn’t need to work and spent their lives in luxury and leisure, meaning they didn’t have to work outside in the sun. So, lighter skin became a symbol of royalty. Whereas the poor people, who couldn’t afford that luxury, had to work in those conditions, therefore tanning their skin. This beauty standard has carried out through the generations, and is still a big part of the Korean beauty standard today (although much less so)

This is very helpful 🙏🏼 even though I’m 3 years into being an army, I still find Korean very difficult 😭😭

Ahh I’m glad! I’ve been an army for over 3 years too and been trying to learn some basics of Korean! Learning Hangul has definitely helped me understand a lot more things!
