NOW GRANTED I'm Team Conrad, however, I can see why anyone would be frustrated with his behavior before S3. But regarding your discussion at 41:54. I don't see it as him lying about his intentions. They've made it very clear from the get-go what kind of brother/person Conrad is, he's the selfless, responsible one - even though that hasn't shone through before because of his emotional unavailability consuming everything else. Especially in comparison to Jeremiah who's a bit less of that since he can afford it thanks to him being the younger brother (not to say he doesn't shine in other aspects, because he does). However, Conrad talking to laurel was more about doing something for THEM together. Like Conrad has said, "they really love eachother" and "he's serious about her" , and so doingthis for belly is in some way helping jere too. And even if it was for belly it doesn't undermine everything else he has done for jere. Honestly I just feel like Conrad wants to do what he can to help and just get the hell out - I dont think he clocks the inner conflicts belly are starting to get, because again they are INNER conflicts. Like he mentioned in the peach scene, "it's all in my head," so all of these favors don't have an ulterior motive of getting into good graces again. S doing this for them would be inconsequential, other than helping them out. because she's with Jere and the wedding is going to happen regardless, ANYWAYS, thank you for the hard work, we all appreciate it, much love from Sweden!!

I don't think the show is 100% pinning Conrad's decision in the season 2 finale on wanting to protect Jeremiah. They are simply following the structure of the book, where we get a Conrad POV chapter when he first reveals about the promise that he made to his mother, making us realize that his last conversation with Susannah was a big factor in why he decided to step aside. It is only when he finally confesses to Belly that we get the full picture of what he was feeling exactly that night at the motel. We find out along with Belly, not through a Conrad POV chapter, which is what they are going to do in the show as well I am guessing. That's when he ultimately tells her why he decided to let her go, because he wasn't in the right headspace to love her like she deserved but he thought Jeremiah could do that for her. It's probably going to be next episode anyways, so we don't have to wait too long (:
