Did you catch that Ilya called him Shane and Shane called him Ilya before Shane freaked out? A little bit of intimacy happened and Shane immediately backed away

I think they're equally culpable of backing away when the other dances closer. It's a decade-long game of chicken with these two. And yes, Ilya understands he doesn't have a right to Shane, but he's still going to have feelings about it. He didn't message Shane knowing he's with Rose -- he's respecting Shane's choice to have a girlfriend -- meanwhile, Shane is the one WITH a girlfriend actively checking to see if Ilya is going to text him to hook up -- so they're both not great at communication. Also, did you notice that Shane kept getting denied ginger ale everywhere? They didn't have it at the restaurant, he was pressured into choosing beer at the bar with Rose, but Ilya had it stocked in the fridge for him.

Right. Shane might not have loved Ilya talking about other girls but he was fine to stay afterward and even let things get heated again. It's when Ilya accidentally says his name that he freaks out. And then Ilya says "Hollander, Hollander" repeatedly when Shane is trying to leave, like he's trying to take the slip-up back.

Oh I love this observation about the ginger ale! I knew it was significant that Ilya had it for him since it seems to be always what he drinks but I never thought about the other times in this ep when he isn’t able to get it. Love that. There’s so many thoughtful details like that throughout this show and it makes it so great to rewatch and catch more of them!
