No, the "You could learn Russian in a week. No accent" is from the books. Ilya consistently admires Shane's perfect English/French when he feels he struggles with his own English a decent amount.

I would like to add some information from the author as well. Shane has undiagnosed autism. The author has said that she based a lot of Shane's character traits of a family member, who at the time of writing the books had yet to be diagnosed with autism. So she only realized it after writing the books that she had written him like that. It's even more prominent and clear in their second book. The actor is playing him like that as well. That's why there's quite a lot of masking, flat delivery and he isn't always able to understand emotions/context clues and therefore asks some awkward questions. Based on your facial expression during the phone conversation you found it strange that Shane asked Ilya if something was upsetting. So I just wanted to let you know if you weren't aware of it yet for some more background information.

So I’ve seen people saying this and personally I don’t know that we need to be viewing Shane’s behavior from an autistic lens right now, given that there was nothing in these 6 episodes to indicate the showrunners intended for us to. I understand the author of the books has said this, and if it’s something the show wants to explore in future seasons, then we should talk about it then. I’m a language and communication specialist who works in a capacity of both diagnosing and providing support services to individuals on the autism spectrum, and I personally did not see anything in Shane’s behavior that would lead me to think he was autistic. As you mentioned, the defining characteristic of autism is difficulty understanding social cues and I think Shane showed a very astute ability to “read between the lines” of everything Ilya does and does not say throughout all their interactions. I’d like to think that if the show intended to represent how someone with autism would navigate a romantic relationship like this that they would consult with some autistic people and resources to do so more accurately. In the meantime, I don’t see any reason to add this element to our analysis of the character and the relationship.

Well you are wrong because I am autistic and he is autistic too it’s a spectrum and he has the same autism spectrum as me and his personality is the same as me so are you going to tell my psychiatrist that I am not autistic?

Thanks for letting me know you disagree Iain and adding your perspective! I imagine there are probably a lot of folks who feel they can identify with Shane and so I’m not out to take that away from anyone who does! Just wanted to share my thoughts because I was surprised to learn this after watching the series and not having read the books. My opinion still stands that I hope the show creators will consult with more resources if this is important to the story they’re telling. My understanding is that while the author has confirmed Shane is meant to be autistic, the showrunners did not particularly try to highlight that. And Shane’s actor has said he tried to base some of his choices on an autistic family member. That’s just not really a solid basis for representation in my view but I’m glad you and others do feel represented.
