As much as the ending annoys me ALOT i do understand both sides - he has been raised in society and repeatedly told he has to marry a woman of society and can't marry someone from lower class or without status (like anthony and sienna in s1) (he doesn't know what we do that she is a lord's daughter) and that has been reinforced a lot in part 1 - they have mentioned a lot about debutantes and women of the ton and reputation then his married friend in country also saying to him he married for status as is normal with gentleman but is in love with his actress mistress. His brother and will talking about marrying for status and love and that is why they don't have a mistress. So to Benedict he is in love with Sophie and thinks that he is making the best offer to Sophie as he can (obviously it isn't and made me so mad at first) as he thinks she always been a servant and that is the best she would achieve which sadly for a lot of lower class back then was true but for Sophie being raised as a lady then forced into service and then finding out her mother was a gentleman's mistress and dying with nothing and knowing what being raised as a mistresses child is like I think that is why she can't do it. I just hope Benedict realises that he hates society anyway and his family would still back him if he decided to marry a 'Maid' and hopefully happens fast as has lot of making up to do to Sophie
