Ser Barristan Selmy is a great character and having him with Daenerys is awesome. You may not remember from the lore video, but he was lord commander of the kings guard to the mad king, and fought beside Crown Prince Rhaegar at the battle of the trident. Robert killed Prince Rhaegar, but him and Ser Barristan were both wounded in the battle. Even though Ser Barristan fought on the opposite side, he was such a legend for his skill and honor that Robert had his personal maesters take care of Sir Barristan's wounds since they were more severe than his own. This delayed Robert's own healing, causing him to send Ned Stark ahead to King's Landing while he recovered. When Robert took the throne, Sir Barristan retained his position as the lord commander of the king's guard. Sir Barristan was a mentor to Jamie Lannister, and Jamie told the story of how honored he was to squire for Sir Barristan when he was younger (to his cousin that he strangled to death during his escape attempt). "He was like a painter, a painter who only used red". Sir Barristan was the one that Ned Stark handed the letter to about the late King Robert naming Ned protector of the realm saying "Sir Barristan. I believe no man here could ever question your honor." And yes, he is the one Cersei an Jofrey fired. He saw the letter naming Ned protector of the realm, and when Cersei tore it up, he said " Those were the King's words". His best quote when he was being fired, "even now I could cut through the 5 of you like carving a cake!"

George R. R. Martin played Sansa's ship guessing game himself when he was young. He grew up in New Jersey, close to the sea. His family was poor and they couldn't afford to travel, so George made up stories about the ships that he saw.

A nice start to a new season. A lot was set up - too bad it had to end already. Margaery will probably be a great queen. Too bad she has to marry Joffrey for that. Sadly no Arya this episode, but I think we checked in with everyone else, unless I'm forgetting someone? I don't think Tywin Lannister is only in it for himself - he's all about his family. Not his children per se, but the Lannisters as an idea, as a force in the world. As for Tyrion, Tywin seems to think he's not his son. He's probably convinced that he could never have fathered an "imp". But Tyrion is his son on paper, so he must adhere to the ideals of the Lannister family.
