Unfortunately, medieval societies made strong efforts to ensure that men and not women would rule their kingdoms, so in the vast majority of medieval realms the son of the king's son had a better claim than the king's daughter, which is also the case in Westeros. So Jon has the better claim. The fact that Rhaegar was never king himself would apparently not have been of any importance at all. (But it was a great question by you, I actually had to google that part.)

Since you brought it up: I don't hate this season. It's not the strongest, but I do think it's vilified a bit too much. As for the ending - I found it underwhelming rather than bad. What Yara said to Theon when she let him go north: "What is dead may never die. But kill the bastards anyway." It's their family words obviously, but also refers to trying to kill the army of the dead. Daenerys looks a tad more graceful riding a dragon than Jon does :-D Oh, and Cersei told Bronn to kill her brothers. Plural. She does not believe in forgiveness.

Are you planning to watch House of the Dragon when this show ends?

Season 8 might not be as godawful as some people say it is, but there are so many things that don't make sense, and I feel that the writers just didn't care. Season 8 is just a huge spectacle without much logic or reasonable continuity. Just this episode alone has so many flaws: the dragon flight might look cool, but there's no way they would be able to hold on to the dragons the way they were flying. They'd fall off after one second tops. Bran is still boring and useless, I don't know why he doesn't use his powers more often, Euron is still boring and annoying (he's amazing in the books, btw!), Cersei for some reason even wants to kill Jaime, which is ridiculous, the Jon and Arya reunion that I had so long been waiting for was strangely devoid of emotion (why didn't they play any music during that scene?), Tyrion isn't smart anymore and continues to make stupid jokes, and Sam cries about the death of his father whom he hates. He should be jumping up and down with joy, his father was literally evil. It feels like the writers barely remembered the previous seven seasons. I really liked your reaction, there's just one thing I disagree with you about: Arya and the Hound have always hated each other. A hug would have been completely out of place, imo. I think you either misinterpret or misremember their time together, I think they really despise each other. Arya only let him live so he would suffer more before he died, that's how much she hates him. (At least that's my take, perhaps it's me who misinterprets their feelings, who knows?)

I'm glad your expectations are lower than usual! Obviously without spoiling anything, I don't think it's one big thing that makes people detest this whole season, for me personally it's more what you've already touched on, how RUSHED these last two seasons feel. I wrote a whole rant on the "capture the wight" episode so I won't repeat that now, but the writing has just become subpar because they're just rushing to put everyone into place for these final big things that have to happen, often having people break character or defy logic to do so. And it was all because the showrunners wanted to go do something else. It was shitty of them, and I wish they'd just passed the show onto someone else who could've taken their time to finish it properly. With how epic this show is, and how much of the zeitgeist it took up when it was airing, it deserved an epic final season, and IMO it did not get one (though there is still a lot of cool stuff coming up that I'm looking forward to seeing -- I literally only watched these last two seasons once as opposed to the earlier ones which I've seen SO many times, so there's a lot I don't remember).

I don't hate this season either. It has it's issues (but what show doesn't have issues) and overall I liked it. There were definitely shortcuts taken, and it could have been better, but nothing is all bad. I'd really suggest you forget about what others say and go into it with an open mind. There's plenty of positive stuff in the season too. I think a lot of people let a few bad elements spoil the whole season for them.
