Freefall

It hurts me to rewatch this lol. There is not even one good moment from this episode. None of the characters actions makes sense and the dialogue is bad. The first one being varys who would never openly be against dany like that. He would do it secretly if anything and would get out of there fast if he suspected something. His death was so anticlimactic. The jamie vs euron fight is also laughable. I feel like the choreography was also kind bad for it? idk maybe it was supposed to be like that. And they totally destroyed danys character because you are right she could of went straight to cersei and spared all the innocent people. The writers wanted to go full circle and make her the mad queen. They also were the ones who decided to have the shorter season and why it feels so rushed.

I agree with pretty much everything you said in your reaction, it feels oddly satisfying to see someone have exactly the same complaints about an episode as myself. (Even though for your sake I did kinda wish you would like the episode, just because it's sad to see you in a bad mood.) Varys is one of my top 5 favourite characters in the whole show, and to see him act like a naive idiot here is heartbreaking and infuriating. There's a video of the actors reading the script and Conleth Hill (the Varys actor) looking absolutely disgusted when he reads how Varys dies. Daenerys' logic in this episode: "I hate Cersei more than anything else in this world and I want my revenge, so instead of immediately killing her I'm going to randomly kill thousands of innocent people that she doesn't give a shit about." This is truly next level stupid. I don't know if anyone else has already told you this, but the reason for why this season feels so rushed and often bad is that the two main writers, Benioff and Weiss, were offered to do a Star Wars project and were under time pressure to finish GoT as soon as possible, which was obviously bad for the quality of the show. They were offered more episodes and more time to do the show by the producers, but they declined. The worst thing about that is that they didn't even follow through with the Star Wars movies, they decided to abandon the project and sign a deal with Netflix for some other projects. This whole thing really made me lose respect for them. They prioritized money over the show's quality, not even realizing they would ruin their entire reputation. It was selfish and stupid.

And now you know. Did Jon, Sansa, Tyrion, and Varys really betray Daenerys by talking about Jon being a Targaryan? Varys is actively working to put Jon on the throne, so that is definitely betrayal. But what about the others? Is telling a secret because they feel the other has a right to know betrayal? Or is Daenerys becoming paranoid? Is the mental illness in her family showing its head? I think that part at least is a good story beat. However the part after the city surrenders and Daenerys still burns it down makes absolutely no sense. She had won. Like you said, she could've flown to the red keep - which was also filled with innocents btw, but why attack the people in the city? I think they were going for rage because of Missandei's death - which is why Grey Worm attacked the soldiers who surrendered. But it really doesn't fit for Daenerys, and especially not for her attacking innocents when the red keep was right there. I do like that the Hound finally killed the Mountain though. It would've been cool if it had been Arya, but it really was his to do. Having it happen while the keep is falling around them is a bit much though.

Now 8x5 is definitely one of the worst episodes of the show, but what you can't fault it for is for calling Grey Worm "Torgo Nudho" xD They've actually used the Valyrian version of his name fairly regularly over the last six seasons, but it's really only ever been the case when he was being addressed by someone speaking in Valyrian (where a name is difficult to separate from the rest of the words) - usually Missandei or Jorah (Jorah generally only ever speaks to people in their native language, it's kinda his thing xD) His name being "Torgo Nudho" is one of those things you'll never catch on a first watch, but after a couple rewatches it's pretty apparent - basically every scene of Jorah and Grey Worm meeting starts with: GW saying: "Jorah, the Andal!", followed by Jorah saying: "Torgo Nudho!". xD I'll put a link to the first scene they call him that in the discord; maybe rewatching stuff from back when the show was good helps with the coping xD

Fun fact, when 8x4 was originally released, I got into like several heated discussions on the fandom websites because I was so sure that Jaime was going to Kings' Landing in order to kill Cersei - I was like, "What are you guys *on* about, obviously that's what he's doing, otherwise they'd just be throwing away eight seasons of character development" - and then 8x5 happened xD

There IS an interesting story they could tell about Dany slowly going mad and it coming to this—but they didn’t tell it. You can’t have a character go from 0-60 in 2 episodes and have it make sense. It’s very clearly a symptom of the showrunners not wanting to work on the show anymore and instead of stepping down and handing it over to competent writers, they rushed through several seasons of plot in a rushed last 2 seasons, breaking characters and spending all the budget on special effects instead of actual writing a story that makes any sense. And that is why we all hate the ending of this show and why I’ll never watch anything those showrunners do ever again. They’ve lost my trust for life.

i think you hit the nail on the head in the tyrion and jaime goodbye scene “i don’t care. i am just so mentally checked out.” THAT more than anything is why the ending is considered the worst ending of all time. i followed these characters for a decade, i followed this story for a decade. when littlefinger died i broke my bed from jumping up and down on it in absolute elation! and for the last 3 episodes of this season i genuinely couldn’t give a shit what happened.
