HeiKira

Just enjoy the calm before the storm:)

Why would Buffy have a relationship soulless vampire? Probably because she already did that.

Stargazer1682

Fun episode, if albeit an odd placement for the final run of the season, let alone series. Almost gives it a "Go Fish" quality given the tone. I think it would have made more sense to swap the Italy part of the story with the A story in Damage; especially since it would be right after Spike get re-corporealized, he wants to go to Buffy, and then Angel has an excuse to follow. It would be right on the heels of their fight over the chalice of Mt Dew; and culminate in a reason for Spike to stay in LA, if he thinks he's lost Buffy to the Immortal. Then in this episode we get the story with Dana and the conclusion with Andrew telling the team how the Scoobies don't trust them anymore, building on the tension from the last episode.

Stargazer1682

This episode underscores the karmic irony that Spike and Angel are probably soulmates.

Stargazer1682

It's kind of ambiguous if the Immortal is a vampire or just some other kind of supernatural entity. If he is a vampire, that does kind of raise the question if that makes Buffy a necrophiliac, because that does set a definitive pattern for her of the type she's into.... Even if he's not a vampire, that's still kind of borderline for Buffy.

Amy Acker is absolutely wonderful in this episode and Illyria is one of my top 3 characters from the Buffyverse! I was looking forward to your reaction to all the cameos (and not cameos) and it was bellissimo!

Yeah I really don't like this episode. I hate how disrespectful it feels to so many groups of people. Every single character feels like a caricature. I hate what they do with Andrew. I hate the immortal being this nebulous but perfect guy - who, incidentally, everyone has heard about, _except us_. I hate how both Angel and Spike fawn over Buffy - who's not even in the episode. And the jokes - the ones that aren't outright insulting - really don't work on rewatches IMO. I can't believe they brought back Juliet Landau and Julie Benz for this drivel. However, I do love the parts with Illyria and Fred's parents. The change that comes over Amy Acker as her parents get out of sight is impeccable.

Yes Lexi, a lot of people thought this episode was displaced, and they found it strange to mix the funny Italian stuff with the heartwrenching Fred/Ilyria stuff. But I LOVE this episode. It is so hilarious. Love the Italian CEO (but we shall talk of her no more...:-)), love the Angel/Spike banter. They truly are playing off each other so well. And when you think about it, Spike and Angel really needed this moving-on-from-Buffy episode. And gold stars to Amy Acker again, her shifting between Fred/Ilyria was really creepy. A funny thing...a few years ago I was chatting online with an Italian Buffyverse fan. He loved this episode, and he told me (as Italians dub everything) they dubbed the CEO with a Sicilian Maffia accent. He thought that was hilarious. Also, they initially wanted Andrew to go on a date with a girl and a boy, but the network said no.

Wished we had more flashbacks with angeles/spike being bros.

It's anecdotal, so I don't know how true it is, but purportedly it was supposed to be Dawn, rather than Andrew, who Angel and Spike find in Italy; and at the end she was just getting ready to go out partying with two friends. But when they couldn't get Michelle they just threw in Andrew and kept the rest the same. It honestly doesn't matter, whether he himself is just going out on the town with two female friends, if he's legitimately interested in either of them, or closeted trying to pass as straight - while scenes on Buffy have implied that Andrew has potential interest in men, they've never explicitly stated his orientation; and even if they did, it wouldn't necessarily preclude interest in women.

The italian stuff in this episode feels like a caricature and i can't take it seriously. If they wanted a lighter episode, they could of done it differently especially knowing they are cancelled. Feels like a waste imo.

Joss Whedon said the final scene with Andrew was a mistake; they never meant to imply that he had turned into a womanizer. It's especially ironic because Tom Lenk later came out as gay in 2008. According to Whedon, "the Andrew scene in 'The Girl in Question' was a victim of me dropping the ball. I specifically said there should be a party of men AND women, all glamorous and Italian, waiting for Andrew. I wasn't there when it was shot, and didn't have the time/money/energy to change it after the fact, though it made me crazy. Andrew's sexuality is always on the cusp of self-awareness because Andrew is stunted emotionally and because it's hilarious."

"Don't you have like an Italian Wesley?" That line cracks me up

This episode is so ridiculous. I don't know whether to love it or hate it. lol I very much enjoyed your reaction to it though. :)

The two story arcs in this episode really did not belong side by side. The Angel/Spike stuff should have been much earlier in the season and the Illyria stuff could have been interspersed with actual plot. Amy Acker's acting is 100% so great. She deserves way more roles than she gets. The sharp difference between Fred and Illyria being switched to from one sentence to another and those head tilts and dead eyes...so perfect. My headcanon is that when Fred's soul got burned up, it actually got burned into Illyria so she has memories and feelings but no context on what to do with them. She doesn't want to experience the grief from Fred's parents because Fred wouldn't want that and it hurts Wesley who Fred loved and she can feel both Fred's love and Wesley's love and that must be very confusing for her. I just love Illyria so much and the way that Amy Acker plays her.

Ron Fehr

Judging from episode 18 (the Connor episode), Illyria has retained some of Fred's memories, so she is able to remember her parents. As for taking Fred's form, it seems that Illyria still has some supernatural abilities, although diminished.

The immortal is not a vampire, they made it clear in the episode that he is not bad or good, that he does his own thing and they don't know what he is.
