Have you guys considered reacting to Look Back? It’s a anime movie by the author of Chainsaw Man!

HBelmont67

I told you to remember that potion Frieren got in episode three! 😅

HBelmont67

So, is Stark a himbo? I'm debating whether he qualifies. 🤔

Phantom Egg

The hero's sword and hamburg steaks are such interesting plot tools. The sword is a test of a warrior's self confidence. Himmel tried and failed but didn't let it get him down. Instead he rebelled against the notion and aimed to prove himself a hero despite his failure to pull it. Stark wasn't even willing to try because either he doesn't even consider it a possibility that he's worthy to pull it or he's not willing to take the chance that he'd fail and prove all the doubts he has in himself correct. The steaks represent a warrior's confidence in each other. Coming from warrior's he respects, his brother and Eisen, its proof that while he may doubt himself those that trained him didn't. They saw greatness where he did not.

HBelmont67

The focus on Stark this episode reminds me a lot of the Sokka episodes from Avatar, weirdly.

yob

stark realizing he actually has been getting birthday presents this entire time always gets me

yob

as head of the himbo identifier association id say so

HBelmont67

How does this show consistently tug on the heartstrings in different ways? 🤧

StorytellerDave

Fun fact - Stark's brother, Stolz, his name literally means pride. He was the pride of the village, but Stark means strong, he is the strength of the village long after its gone.

Babybear47

Honestly I thought stark was going to pull the sword out too lol so your not alone the first time he saw it

StorytellerDave

I love that Stark immediately thought of his brother when seeing the Hero's sword. He didn't think to try and draw it himself, he thought of his brother instead, because to him, he's the truest hero there is.

StorytellerDave

I will never get tired of hearing Montana call people 'freak' XD

HBelmont67

He's Best Boy for a reason. Also, you watched and loved Vox Machina, but not Frieren?!

HBelmont67

The story is young . . .

Limini

He ran away ONE time and it is still haunting him 😭😭😭

Limini

Whenever I see stolz kneeling in the dirt with his white cape in the mud, I start crying like he cares so much for stark. Truly the pride of the village not only a great warrior but also a great brother

Limini

Stark wont pull the sword until he thinks of himself as a hero and that's super frustratjnfgjfhhfh

HBelmont67

Not Montana with the dirty mind at the clouds. 🤣🤣 "Fern, you have perfect t- . . .iming." 😅

A lot of reactors seem to not quite understand. The "hero sword" isn't there to be pulled. It may not ever be able to be pulled. Maybe the true hero is the one like Himmel who rises up above fate and does something anyways. That sword is a test to weed out ACTUAL "fake heroes" because they stop before trying due to the fact that they couldn't pull it. Stark pulling out the sword would be extremely pointless and take away the entire point of that story with Himmel. Stark is someone with his own path and story. No point in trying to pull out a sword when the entire point of pulling the sword was to use it to take out the demon king. Himmel basically made the "fake hero sword" into the "real hero sword" because it was wielded by the true hero himself. The hero makes the sword not the other way around. :) This is just one of many reasons why I admire and love Himmel as a character. He is truly HIM. HIMothy. HIMmington. The HIMsters. My top 3 favorite characters of all time not just in this series.

L.C.

Also the "true" hero sword aka the one Himmel wielded was buried with his body in his casket with him holding it on top of himself. He is still holding it even in death.

L.C.

That first question in the discussion sort of bypasses or ignores the entire thing of what is trying to be told and portrayed in this episode. Its not anything about another "calamity" and no one else is going to pull the "hero" sword. Unless I misunderstood the question but what revolves around it is redundant in my opinion.

L.C.

The calamity is seen as the demon king but the sword is a plot device used to show how much of a true hero Himmel is. I get that it can be confusing but people love to look at things in the most basic stereotypical shonen esc type of thinking. The sword is not meant to actually be used. You have to think about it and how it entirely revolves around Himmel and only Himmel.

L.C.

Stark is taking that example of Himmel and how Himmel pushed beyond what fate told him and had the courage to push forward to be that true hero and trying to unfairly apply it to himself. He isn't Himmel and he shouldn't unfairly treat himself that way by trying to live off of Himmel and his life. He is his own person and there is no better person to try to aspire to be like and see as an example of how he wants to go in his own life but he is having the classic case of making himself feel worse and being harder on himself than he needs to be. In his eyes when he thinks of Himmel and saw that hero sword he saw his older brother and sees his older brother of someone who is a true hero similar to Himmel.

Limini

The story doesn't only revolve around Himmel 😅 While it touches upon themes of what is a true hero, and destiny but it also represents legends and frames of time. For example a big theme in the show is how over time people and facts get distorted and romanticized over time. We see it happening with Himmel, how people only remember him as a hero and not the guy who takes 18 hours to pose for a statue or Flamme who is considered a fairy tale, etc. Another theme would be time and frames of time, what I mean by that is that everything we experience is in reference to how we experience time. For example when Kraft asked who frieren was before she was the hero party mage. Frieren is remembered as such but before she was Flammen greatest student and before that the strongest elf of her village and who knows what comes in the future. Or with the Lord of the mountain who is a huge threat and something the village chief had to deal with her whole life, while frieren barely considers him a Lord. Just like that thd demon king could be "the one great calamity" or it could come in the future long after frieren is dead. The point I'm making is that things don't stay stagnant. It's not one and done. The demon king that terrorized the continent for over a thousand years is not the definite evil that just disappears after he's been slain. In the course of time he is one of many. The world is much bigger over time. So it is a good place to ask, is the sword a legend that got warped over time, can we trust what we know about it, is it implying that something else maybe even greater than the demon king lies ahead somewhere in the future, what do we learn about the world and how it tells stories? While the sword IS a narrative device as you said, to ask what makes a true hero, it also can do more than that for the story and entirely dismissing the worldbuilding implications and how other characters (stark) interact with the sword and how they answer the question (stolz) , in favor of treating it as a way to show off Himmel and only Himmel loses a bit of what the story could give you.

Limini

You are working your interpretations on a lot of assumptions. And while it is a valid interpretation it doesn't mean it's the only one. And people wanting stark to pull the sword is usually seperate from that bc they are just rooting for best boy. They want catharsis for him and to bolster his image of himself which we get at the end of the episode.

L.C.

Not much interpretation based on assumptions as you make it out to be. It explains a lot of itself. If you want to think that way go ahead but I tend to know my thinking is correct since I love this manga and keep up with it and watch the anime dozens of times.

L.C.

I don't care what they want him to do it for. The sword isn't meant to be pulled by him and it ruins the story of the sword revolving around Himmel. The entire point of the sword is simply to use it to support Himmel and his character. Nothing more and nothing less.

L.C.

Stark won't ever pull the sword lmao but sure go ahead and believe that

L.C.

I like his character and his own path. It doesn't have to do with the sword

cade-carter

Fern has one horrendous flaw... she trashes stark at every turn and expects the worst from him. She has no reason other than her own misguided perceptions. she thinks he will creep on frieren

Addy

it’s not his master but his BROTHER making the steak for him in secret that always gets me 😭

Darthwin Wright

I think the bigger factor would be that Stark uses a different weapon than a sword and would need to change up his fighting style.

Limini

It's not about the sword himself but whether he thinks of himself as a hero or not. It's frustrating that he sees himself in such a bad light. If he had enough self esteem he'd do it for funsies but he still thinks of himself as a coward and undeserving of being a hero, which is why he doesn't even try. And I don't want to spoiler but stark is capable of learning multiple fighting styles

Limini

Like of course he's not gonna ever come back to pull the sword why would he It's about the metaphor and what the sword means in relation to himself

Limini

Not really. When she calls him a pervert it's probably because she was being raised by a priest. She called Kraft a pervert on sight too. So yes she is very biased in that area. But in this episode, we can see that she thinks highly of him. "Of course stark wouldn't appreciate such a potion" "He's not a pervert but just immature" And even when they first met she believed that he would not run awaywafter they had their talk. Plus Fern is just very protective of Frieren in general

Erin Ryan

I love Stark and this episode so much

HBelmont67

BTW, the chief of the Village of the Sword is La Brava from MHA.

HBelmont67

Of COURSE Montana would feel bad about killing the wolf monsters. 😅

Braden Jackson

Dang surprised I didn’t even notice that

Cartooncrazed13

I had this thought in an earlier episode. Since you guys seem to really like the adventure/journey aspect of the show, there's another show that I'd like to recommend, it's called Kino's Journey -The Beautiful world- as the name implies, it's an anime about the journey of the character Kino as she travels from country to country. I don't know if there's any place that I need to go to recommend things (I just got here), so I put it here

HBelmont67

The scene at 21:21 was meant to focus on the bracelet on Stark's wrist that Fern got him. Kenny and Montana's reactions weren't unwarranted, tho. 😅

HBelmont67

"Village of the Sword" = Swordsmith Village

Matthew Jobin

Bro you gotta chill you are going on overdrive in these comments 😭 Kenny even says he knows it’s meant to be a plot device even though he wants to see him pull it. Even if he didn’t, it’s a react channel man. You gotta compartmentalize a bit.

StorytellerDave

The moment Stolz tells Stark to run I start sobbing uncontrolably XD

HBelmont67

I'm with Kenny in wanting Stolz to be alive, but I don't wanna hope. 😥

HBelmont67

Has that been dubbed?

Jinchuriki87

Damn...so maybe I'm reading too much into this But it feels like the whole start of starks running away all the time was triggered by his brother's words added onto the obvious shit he was given by the rest of his family (that he was worthless) "Run away, you have to survive " These combined into him instinctively wanting to run to survive believing he HAD to because he felt incapable of standing on his own

HBelmont67

I gotta say: Frieren and Stark's dynamic is pretty underrated. Beyond her remembering Stark's birthday (which is a feat from her in and of itself) and getting excited over what to give him, the way she relied on him against the Wolf Lord says a lot with a little. Her casual, "I know you're not dead, yet" demonstrates so much faith in her warrior's capability, and it's nice to see.

Limini

Yes and it's a very good dub

gamerx

You know she has a crush on him

gamerx

Not entirely true the great calamity isn't the demon King. The great calamity is whatever troubles that generation. A few hundred years from now it will still be there and the legend will return.

Baron Salt

I think Fern, having been raised by a Priest, is projecting a lot of her own sexual desires and myths her dad probably told her onto Stark. Probably because she's a teenager and can't process how to actually express herself yet.

Resand

Frieren isn't devious with the "dissolves clothes potion", she's naive. Flamme told her that men would like that gift, with the understanding that it's the kind of thing you give to man as a "you can use that on me, wink wink" kind of gift to lover. But Elves being the way they are, and Frieren being even more dense than most, totally missed the subtext.

Matt Lievens

You gotta love the fact that Fern is always calling people perverts, yet she's done the most perverted things in the show, like dissolving Frieren's clothes, and looking through Stark's clothes.
