Man so excited for yall to watch this. Especially since it’s your first seinen on the channel

Sora

so hyped

Lyrical Kell of Music

SO HYPED! A lil spoiler below CANT WAIT FOR MY GOAT EVIL UNCLE IROH

no u uwu

you’re gonna absolutely love this show man it really is a 10, sound track, animation, story & characters. The vibes are so on point.

Tyler Owens

The greatest anime ever made. I’m an Army veteran who deals with combat related PTSD from my time in Afghanistan and this show legit helped me overcome my depression and desire for self harm. I love it so dearly.

Jimmy

This show is absolute cinema. A little slow here and there but the payoff is absolutely worth it.

James ray

VINLAND SAGA FINALLY WOOOOOO (you guys are going through the most life changing animes and once)

Tyler Morris

this show is incredible!!! it’s probably gonna be the heaviest show yall watched yo to this point.

Tyler Owens

This isn’t an appeal to watch the sub, just my opinion on why the dub gets so much hate. It has nothing to do with quality of voice acting but the actual text localization. For me it’s little things about the dub that drive me insane.. because I legit don’t understand why certain text changes were made. Seeing the subtitles and spoken words not matching up makes it so obvious too. For example an example from Ep 1, why in the scene with Leif and the headress they choose to say things like “fearless” warrior instead of “true”. WHY change it when the former: - means something different - lacks the direct intended connection to a CORE theme of the show I’ll just never understand why someone chooses to change something in a meaningless way that only REMOVES meaning, connection, and narrative depth. It legit seems like the person localizing it was simply using a thesaurus to change words at random to prevent being repetitive when the repetition is intended and important. This is what makes the dub worth critiquing … it has nothing to do with the quality of voice acting, it’s the seemingly random changes that at scale remove narrative connection, meaning and impact intended by the author. Either way, still excited to watch and want to specify I’m by no means a dub hater, simply a ‘hater’ of this dub for the above reasons. For ADDITIONAL context, I work in video games and specifically have experience in localization processes and automation for international publishing of AAA video games (like Halo, Apex Legends and other EA Games) so I’m somewhat aware of how it all works. I’ve even worked with Chris Sabat on localization / VA work. So from my POV it’s just sad to see them cut corners on such beautiful source material imo. /end rant

Eiríkur Eiríksson

Fun fact, Thorfinn karlsefni, the main character, is based on an actual historical figure of the same name and he's an ancestor of many Icelanders today- also the fact that he's one of my ancestors is crazy.

Erin Ryan

Thanks for answering my question! I'm so excited for you guys to watch this absolute masterpiece

HBelmont67

They're on an Aleks Le binge right now with these shows. 😅 No judgment lol

Erin Ryan

The fact that in this setting Ylva is the most normal in the family lol. Definitely not defending her actions but Thors mindset is VERYYYY unusual

HBelmont67

What about Death Note?

HBelmont67

I'm torn. Unlike most shows I haven't watched that have been reactions on this channel, Vinland Saga's one I actually had on my watchlist. Should I watch it for the first time here with K & M, or go check it out by myself?

Franina

I would say by yourself first. This is a definitely a show where you want to grasp everything and really let the emotions hit you on your own

Franina

Wow mob psycho let’s go!

Eiríkur Eiríksson

Death Note was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump for it's whole run, Vinland Saga was only briefly before it was published elsewhere aimed for older for most of it

HBelmont67

If Thursdays are gonna be for either anime or western, then Castlevania should DEFINITELY come next, as it's technically not an anime. 🧛‍♂️

pineapplegreg

This is one my favorite anime, I know you guys are gonna absolutely love this.

L.C.

huh?.... I think ur a bit confused buddy lmao

L.C.

Now you guys have finally met the GOAT himself Thorfinn as well as the GOAT Thors!

Eileen

Excited to rewatch this with you guys! This is a special one

Franina

No at the very end of the video they said Mob Psycho will most likely replace frieren

VolcanoVR

YESSSS I HAVE ADHD I HATE SUBBED SOOO MUCH 😭😭

Ramon Fax!

Finally your first Seinen series! Feels different from Shonen doesn't it?

Erin Ryan

Depends if you can wait once a week for each ep which I personally COULD NOT its too good

Erin Ryan

Omg I never thought of them like that before but your so right lol

Letts React

That auditory processing becomes an ISSUE haha

VolcanoVR

By the end of an episode I had essentially read a pretty looking book, and I just want to say how big of a fan I am!! Been here since 2020! You both deserve everything you’ve built

Jinchuriki87

Im curious if the subtitles were pulled from the other dub of this show (some of yall kept saying there are two different versions of the dub when it was in the polls) Hell I've even seen where you get different translations to go along with the subs as well (example: I've seen "malevolent shrine" and "malevolent kitchen" during the shibuya arc of JJK)

Letts React

Appreciate you man! Glad to know our channel appeals to other people who enjoy watching Dub! Thanks for the support over the years! People like you made this all possible!

VolcanoVR

I’ve actually been wanting to follow your patreon for so long, got a job after graduating college, waited a few paychecks of course but couldn’t wait to buy it!

Binky

Presentism refers to applying modern values and perspectives to analyze the past. A common example is criticizing historical figures like George Washington or Thomas Jefferson for their views on slavery, which were common for their time, but would be condemned today. Similarly, presentism can be seen when people interpret historical events through the lens of contemporary political or social issues, such as judging the actions of a past leader based on modern standards of justice.

Tyler

Wednesday is officialy my favorite day of the week for the next few months, so excited to see both of your reactions to this, cant wait to hear your thoughts as the characters develop and this amazing story plays out

BLUEMONKEY18

One step closer to Berserk (this is not a recommendation)

Tyler Morris

sub scripts and dub scripts are not necessarily the same or done by the same people. these subtitles are from the sub script, thus it has a bit more of a direct translation from japanese rather than having to adhere to mouth flaps. sometimes netflix gives multiple options for english subtitles. the option that would match the dub scripts would be something like “english (cc)”

shmeki

This anime will break you.

cade-carter

misunderstanding Ylva immediately and instantly judging her...

L.C.

I think the sister was perfectly justified in saying they will be in trouble for having a runaway slave in their household. You can't look at this from the perspective of now. You need to look at it from a perspective of how slavery was very normal and even justified back in the day. We all know slavery is bad and it should never happen under any circumstances but harboring a runaway slave is a bad thing in her eyes due to the fact that the people who owned that slave might come looking for him and start trouble with them. When you already do all that you can to just survive due to the weather having people show up at your front door starting trouble on top of that is not good. I don't want to spoil anything but just give it time and let the show play out. I completely understand where the sister is coming from and she is wrong in her way of thinking and doesn't understand but like any good character there is always room for character growth and development.

L.C.

I personally think you are being way too harsh on her. Even the part about her just saying "he is a runaway slave from somewhere else". She is stating the obvious lol

L.C.

All that being said again I stand behind Thors 100% and would do the same. Its just the case of thinking about everything in the context of the situation and time period

真嗣 • Shinji

This show and AOT are so different but for some reason occupy the same space in my mind. Also my top 2 favorites

Letts React

Bro she was advocating for buying a slave we need to say that’s not ok EVEN IF it was common at the time lol. Especially when there is someone around her who disagrees, we’re not about to be like “yep makes sense she’s fine to think that way”, I think that’s pretty understandable haha

ABRIKOS102

I think finding matching subtitles would be nice for the show like that. Cos it’s kinda hard to comprehend all the text when it’s different to the dub you guys hear

mffame

Dislike the sister hate

mffame

Aot is so mid

Catalin

I can’t believe people are against you judging Ylva. I’ve genuinely never seen that.

Jake

Vinland is actually supposed to be North America, there is evidence that Vikings were in North America long before Columbus did, and it actually Leif was talking about meeting Native Americans

Catalin

Leif actually did have peaceful interactions with the Natives. This actually happened quite a bit in history but unfortunately they get outweighed by atrocities. For example, the first Thanksgiving celebration is often criticized for being a celebration of genocide, but why it’s so important is that it genuinely started a 100 year span of peace. Then expansion made it about resources instead of coexistence. But many fur traders, merchants, and even settlers had great relations. It’s actually a part of history that doesn’t get talked about enough because we look at things in black and white and don’t recognize why things fall apart.

Alseriph

I’m so glad y’all are watching this show! Compared to previous shows you’ve watched, this show deals with very mature themes. I think that’s obvious from just the first episode. It’s the big difference between shonen and seinen anime. Although I love the art and fights in Vinland Saga, I love it more because of what the story has to say.

Erin Ryan

Damn didn't know that. Vinland Saga being peak once again

Juan Solo

I could be totally wrong about this, but from what I've heard Aleks Le was pretty passionate about the localization and insisted for certain lines to properly convey their intended meaning.

mastertater

The guy halfdan is gojo and pay attention to thorfinn VA when gets older

mastertater

And I can't believe they didn't pick up endeavor VA

Teib _21

Honestly the Sub-Dub thing is kinda annoying, yes Subbed is better than Dubbed and their are some differences, but at least people are watching the show, and Dubbed has come a long way from being horrible in the early 2000s (with some exceptions). Love your reactions, I personally prefer the Sub but you’re the only Dubbed reactors I watch, keep picking amazing shows, can’t wait for your future reactions😉

Eric

I have been begging since you guys did fma and I am so happy and pleased to see you guys finally start PEAKLAND SAGA

Eric

Also note the first three episodes are actually heavily anime original content meant to fill in the gaps in the story the manga did not entirely cover in its prologue (due to time constraints in setting up the story) but are very much canon and loved by the community at large

defnotdai

The thing about Ylva is, while yes slavery is terrible and wrong, her reaction makes sense for the time period and circumstances they were in. It's not a matter of her being for or against slavery, that was unfortunately the norm so everyone is desensitized to it. She's fearful about the potential harm that taking in a slave would do to THEIR community. From her perspective, they can't really afford to put the morality of slavery over survival. Keeping someone's slave means the owner is going to come looking them, which is exactly what happened. And while they didn't lose any lives this time, they did lose a good amount of livestock for the price of one person who didn't even live. Basically, that decision was always gonna cost them something. I will say the characters in this show are VERY nuanced

Eric

I can’t wait for them to get the build up to the real thematic message of the show

Mjw

I completely agree! this show is one where you can't immediately judge a character on the first 20 minutes of meeting them, rarely in this show is a character who is good or bad they all have something about them that makes them interesting, and while I get it can be hard to accept the way a character acts when you view the show with modern day social norms rather than thinking about it with a more historical look it's still clear that Ylva is just worried about protecting her family and everyone around her and trying to do what she can to make sure they're safe, I hope Kenny and Montana warm up to her and realize that even if what Ylva is saying is by all means wrong it's coming from a place of wanting to protect her Community and not from any form of childishness or lack of proper parenting on her mother and fathers behalf.

Tyler Owens

Yeah and I love him specifically for this type of stuff, but one person on a project of this size needing to fight for authenticity or maintaining integrity of the source material is indicative of a systemic flaw in project or production. My critique is primarily specific to this anime and not based on some larger dub bias. When a primary character actor (i.e. generally one of the highest influence individuals outside of producers or execs) has to consistently use their position on the project to keep it committed to the source material: - who in the production hierarchy should be but isn’t concerned with authenticity - which other character actors and scenes didn’t have the leverage to fight for or would insist on authenticity? It’s not the end of the world, I’m just upset that a story very dear to me has reached much fewer people because of how specific people handled the North American localization. It’s not terrible, it just (imo) not done with the care I think this story deserves and I wish it was. Does that make sense? I know this is my unique a personal hill to die on lol

NasOKM

Third is a idiot. This show makes me so upset.

Juan Solo

Totally get it. Just wanted to give props to someone who could've simply followed along with the script. Aleks probably lost more arguments than he won (I wouldn't know since I haven't seen either version of the anime), but at least he cared to fight for what he knew was right. Plus, I'm willing to bet others working on the dub felt the same, otherwise he would've been ignored.

Juan Solo

In case you didn't catch it, Thors is voiced by Greg Chun (Muzan). Ylva is voiced by Allegra Clark (Maki and Miwa).

Juan Solo

Probably best to watch it on your own first. That's what I do with most shows K&M watch.

Luke

Obviously her way of thinking and slavery in general is wrong, but isn’t it a bit harsh to criticize her so much so early? I mean, you guys basically hated her instantly. It’s not like most people were against it during that time. Thors is an outlier. The man is a saint so he doesn’t really count. Is she really wrong to think that way when society tells her it’s acceptable? She isn’t a focal point in the show or anything so it’s not really a big deal if you dislike her lol. I just thought it was a little unfair.

StorytellerDave

When I first tried watching this show I kinda gave up in the first episode because I was looking for something grounded, and the anime supernatural level fighting, slashing through a mast turned me off, cleaving people in two with one swing kinda stuff just was not what I craved, so I watched Apothecary Diaries and Orb: On the Movements of the Earth instead, but upon giving it a chance, I actually appreciate that armor - at least for the main character - actually does something. I hate the armor is just useless tissue paper trope that is SO prevalent in media, so I actually appreciated that the arrow just hit him and he was completely fine with the mail he has on.

StorytellerDave

Yeah, slavery is pretty commonplace in the viking age. It's not based off of race like it was with the US (though Slavs were very common targets and often viewed as 2nd class in many countries), more just prisoners brought back by vikings. It's a very brutal time, it was very normalized for everyone to own slaves, so as much as I hate it, I kinda get where the sister is coming from, it's what everyone does, so she sees nothing wrong with it. Kinda scary how easy it is for horrible things to be viewed as normal, it's how a lot of the worst practices of the past came to be. Also, a fun fact - Not everyone is a viking, only people who actually go on a viking (a raid) are called vikings. Viking is not the name of an actual peoples. You'd refer to the people as the name of their respective culture/tribe. Norse, Danes, Swedes, etc... would be more apt, depending on the person.

StorytellerDave

I don't normally have trouble with subtitles, but not gonna lie, the fact that the subtitles here were different than what they were actually saying threw me for a loop lol

StorytellerDave

Can't really judge her for wanting to do what literally everyone else does, but one can't help but feel uncomfortable by how normal the practice is to her and well...everyone in this period. Thors is very much an outlier, which just makes it all the more horrifying. There's that term, the banality of evil? It's basically that. It's just so normal that nobody bats an eye in that era and meanwhile we just watch it with horror.

StorytellerDave

41:00 - "Is Vinland real?" - Surely it cannot be real, I mean a land with maple syrup and moose where everyone is polite? There's no way such a place could ever exist.

StorytellerDave

After watching a bit of Vinland I get why everyone calls Orb, Poland Saga. The two shows have very similar DNA, even if the plot is about different topics. Then again, sailing and astronomy kinda go hand in hand.

StorytellerDave

Nah, there's no way such a place as Vinland, it could ever exist. Canada is not real, it's clearly fake. I can believe the maple syrup, but moose? Nah, those steroid deer cannot possibly be real, it's all made up.

tosu

How as no one told to you to watch MONSTER (Great English dub and a beautiful anime overall)

L.C.

It is quite annoying when some of these people only ever wanna talk about the "atrocities" done against Native Americans and how "bad" colonization is.... Meanwhile we have evidence of how the tribes were attacking and slaughtering each other and carving out their hearts etc.... Just like any demographic there are good people and bad people. Plenty of instances of peaceful interactions with both sides back then and also plenty of examples of bad things done as well. Everything is grey and should be treated as such. Always good and bad in everything. Choosing one side or the other is pointless and dumb. I get tired of the exaggerated victimization from people. Constantly playing victim of certain things and constantly bringing up things to push hatred. Tired of all of that type of stuff so I tend to choose to ignore it.

Aj -

i could almost shed a tear omggggg

Aj -

no wayyyy yall reacting to vinland i love yall

Swanzy

Great reaction, excited for this! 🙌😊 Ah, also, if you're potentially planning to do another poll would it be possible to add in Apothecary Diaries to the list?

Sol

You guys are going to have to get used to the fact that slavery was super super super commonplace during the Viking era. Yes slavery is absolutely abhorrent and wrong, but it was absolutely normal a thousand years ago when this took place. And it was worldwide at this time, not just amongst the Vikings obviously

StorytellerDave

Well, it actually depends on whether you view serfs as slaves or not. If yes, then yeah slavery is everywhere at this point in time, but if not, then it's not nearly as commonplace. It is the norm among Scandinavians (they're not really called vikings, viking only refers to people who have gone on a viking - a raid), but not quite the norm across all of Europe, at least not for now. It will be very common later and it was common a few centuries before, back when the Roman Empire was together.

Erin Ryan

Theres very few characters who can do that much destruction we don't really see it again from other characters

StorytellerDave

I was looking for something specific at the time and I already found it so I am fine regardless, but thx for the info anyways. Honestly when I heard people referr to Orb as Poland Saga it kinda rekindled my interest anyways, cuz being compared to Orb is high praise for any show, bc that is a masterpiece, so I'm optimistic about what I'll see :) That said I'll probably just watch 1 ep a week to keep up with the release schedule, I don't wanna jump ahead.

SerPounceDK

thats just not correct... im danish and we learn all about viking history in School, first of all vikings didnt call themselves vikings, its not a title, it was a kinda curseword made by other countries like england. vikings where literally just Swedes, norwigians and danes going on raids across the seas. and slavery was just as normal as phobes are today, the only difference is in Scandinavia we had thralls, wich was slaves, but the slavery wasn't a life sentence, you could be redeemed if you owner wanted to. viking history is incredibly fascinating and movies and series about vikings have spread so much miss information about them, that most people think of them as big tough guys with horned helmets and axes, when in reality they were farmers from harsh lands looking for riches elsewhere 😁

Benji4114

Dont worry about only watching Dubbed verions, after comming accross your channel i realised how much people usually miss when watching in subbed format (other CC`s) this effect usually becomes more apparent when watching shows with more difficult to understand power systems like jjk etc

Alejandro

Dumbest take ever

JTBloodstone

I know, Kenny is usually so keyed in on his voice specifically lol

FearTheDee

I am the kind of person who loves subtitles whether it's dubbed or subbed, so bring on the subtitles! lol

Terry Johnson

So about Thorkell the Tall he led a group called the Jomsvikings and they were essentially an army for hire they'd work for who had the most money. When he finally died it was him alone holding a bridge according to legend against 100 men.

AJ Hutchinson

Thanks for this insight! We never got taught this side in the US!! Always love learning and context so thinks for taking the time to explain!
